Taxonomy & naming

Ctenopoma nigropannosum was described by the German ornithologist and zoologist Eduard Reichenow in 1875. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Ctenopoma nigropannosum Reichenow, 1875. Because the species was first described within the genus Ctenopoma, where it remains, no parenthetical authority is used.

The genus Ctenopoma (family Anabantidae, order Anabantiformes) comprises the African climbing perches — labyrinth fishes of sub-Saharan freshwaters ecologically analogous to the Asian Trichogaster and Sandelia, but forming their own lineage within the family. The specific epithet nigropannosum is Latin, meaning roughly 'black-patched' or 'bearing a black cloth-like marking', a reference to the dark pigmentation pattern on the body. The common name twospot climbing perch, used in North American faunal surveys, alludes to the dark markings visible on the flanks and caudal peduncle, though the number and definition of 'spots' varies with condition and preservation.

Historical records from Gabon and the Ogowe River have been assigned to this species, though some authorities have noted that these attributions may rest on misapplied type material; confirmed range records centre on the Congo system and adjacent Lower Guinea coastal basins. Morphology

Ctenopoma nigropannosum is a moderately large African bushfish, reaching a maximum total length of around 6.5 in, making it one of the more substantial members of the genus. The body is fusiform — elongate and somewhat compressed laterally — with the blunt snout and large mouth characteristic of piscivorous Ctenopoma. The dentition and gape are suited to taking small fish and invertebrates whole.

The colouration is understated relative to some anabantoids: the body is grey to greyish-brown, often with a faint barred or mottled pattern on the flanks that helps the fish blend with submerged vegetation and leaf litter. The most consistent marking is a dark bar or blotch on the caudal peduncle, which gives the species part of its common name. Like all Ctenopoma, the operculum bears a small spine (the feature from which the genus name derives: ktenos = comb, poma = cover), and the dorsal and anal fins are set well back, giving the fish a sleek, ambush-predator silhouette.

Sexual dimorphism is not strongly expressed externally in this species; males can be distinguished in breeding condition by subtle differences in body depth and fin development, and in some individuals by the presence of small spines on the scales, a trait seen in several Ctenopoma species.

Habitat

The species is distributed across the Congo River basin and the adjacent Chiloango and Kouilou drainages of Angola, Cabinda, and the Republic of Congo, with additional records from the Ngongo-Noumbi rivers and smaller coastal systems of the Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province. Within its range, Ctenopoma nigropannosum is benthopelagic, inhabiting the middle and lower water column of warm, still to sluggish freshwaters: swampy marginal areas, backwaters, flooded forest fringe, and slower tributaries with dense vegetation and structural cover. Like all labyrinth fishes, it is an obligate air-breather, supplementing gill respiration with atmospheric air drawn through the suprabranchial labyrinth organ. Feeding

Ctenopoma nigropannosum is a predator. Diet data indicate it takes small fish and invertebrates, consistent with the ambush-hunting strategy typical of larger Ctenopoma: the fish holds almost motionless among vegetation or debris and strikes rapidly at passing prey with a fast protrusible jaw.

In the aquarium it will readily accept live and frozen foods — small fish (feeders used cautiously), earthworms, large invertebrates, and meaty frozen items such as prawn, mussel, and large bloodworm. Acclimatised individuals can learn to accept meaty pellets and sticks, though live and frozen prey elicit the most vigorous feeding responses. Like most large predatory anabantoids, it feeds infrequently compared to small omnivores; feeding every two to three days with substantial portions suits adults better than daily small meals.

Mating

Ctenopoma nigropannosum is an open-water egg-scatterer. The species does not build a bubble nest and does not practise mouthbrooding; instead, spawning pairs release eggs and milt directly into the water column, where buoyant or semi-buoyant eggs drift toward the surface and are left without parental attendance.

Courting behaviour in larger Ctenopoma typically involves the male pursuing and flanking the female, with lateral displays accentuating the body colouration and finnage. The dark markings and subdued base colour of this species may play a role in close-range assessment; direct observation of courtship in C. nigropannosum in the wild is not well documented in the available literature, but the reproductive guild — open-water scatter spawning with no nest — is confirmed by FishBase oviparous records and is consistent with the broader pattern across the genus.

Breeding

As an open-water egg-scatterer, Ctenopoma nigropannosum deposits eggs that are non-adhesive and buoyant, released into the water column during a spawning embrace. Ctenopoma nigropannosum is one of the more accommodating of the larger African bushfishes for the species aquarium, being tolerant of a range of water conditions and less aggressive than some conspecifics toward non-fish tankmates of adequate size. However, its predatory nature and eventual size — up to 6.5 in TL — mean it is incompatible with small fish: any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth will eventually disappear.

A spacious aquarium of at least 59 in in length suits an adult, furnished with robust plants, driftwood, and subdued lighting to replicate the shaded, vegetated environments it inhabits in the wild. Filtration should provide gentle to moderate flow; as a labyrinth fish it requires unobstructed surface access to breathe atmospheric air, so the tank must not be sealed or airtight immediately above the water surface. Water temperature of 75–81 °F and a near-neutral to slightly acidic pH are appropriate; the species is hardy and does not require the extreme soft-water conditions of more demanding anabantoids.

It is a slow, deliberate fish that can be kept singly or in pairs; same-species groups risk aggression unless the aquarium is very large. Compatible tankmates of appropriate size include larger West African cichlids, robust catfish, and other mid-to-large anabantoids that can defend themselves. With patience and meaty food it can be long-lived in captivity, though it is not commonly bred and wild-caught specimens dominate availability.

Conservation

Ctenopoma nigropannosum is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 16 February 2009. The species is widespread across the Congo basin and the Lower Guinea coastal drainages, a range that spans multiple countries and large river systems, and it faces no identified specific threat driving significant population decline.

Records from the Kouilou, Noumbi, and associated coastal basins of the Republic of Congo have been confirmed in peer-reviewed ichthyofaunal surveys, and historical records extend into Gabon and potentially Angola and Cabinda. As a species of stable, broad distribution in relatively undisturbed Central African watersheds, its situation contrasts favourably with many more narrowly endemic members of the family. Ongoing monitoring is warranted given broader pressures on Congo basin habitats — deforestation, artisanal and commercial fisheries expansion, and climate variability — but no immediate threat to the species as a whole has been documented.
