Harvey's licorice gourami is one of the smallest and most jewel-like labyrinths in the world — a 30-to-35-millimetre inhabitant of the blackwater peat-swamp forests of Selangor on the western Malay Peninsula, where its type locality at Batu Arang now lies largely under the shadow of agriculture and urban expansion. Males court with an arresting head-down display, then spawn in miniature caves, the male standing guard alone over eggs and newly hatched fry. The IUCN has assessed the species as Endangered, and what wild habitat remains is patchy and fragile.

Taxonomy & naming

Parosphromenus harveyi was described by Brown in 1987. The type locality is Batu Arang, on the western side of Peninsular Malaysia in the state of Selangor, a peat-swamp site that has since been substantially altered by land clearance. The valid name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Parosphromenus harveyi Brown, 1987.

The genus Parosphromenus belongs to the family Osphronemidae — the labyrinth fishes of South and Southeast Asia — and comprises more than two dozen small, cave-spawning species collectively known in the hobby as licorice gouramis. Within the genus, P. harveyi is placed in the 'harveyi group', defined in part by the characteristic head-down courtship posture shared among its members. It is most likely to be confused with P. bintan, from which it is separated chiefly by colour: P. harveyi typically lacks the red-brown tones on the unpaired fins that characterise P. bintan.

Morphology

Parosphromenus harveyi is a miniature fish, with Seriously Fish giving a maximum standard length of 1–1.5 in; FishBase records 0.5 in SL for the holotype, but this likely represents an immature specimen rather than adult size. The body is slender and slightly laterally compressed, typical of the genus. Pelvic fins are elongated into filamentous extensions — a diagnostic feature of the group — and are iridescent blue in sexually active males.

Male colouration in breeding dress is striking despite the fish's small size. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins each carry a black subdistal band framed by iridescent bluish bands, and the pelvic filaments glow a vivid blue. Pectoral fins are hyaline. Females and resting males are far plainer: a pale yellowish-brown body with an oblique dark bar running through the eye. The EAZA Best Practice Guidelines document dorsal-fin ray counts of XI–XIII, 5–7 as a useful diagnostic character. Nuptial intensity in males peaks in the low-water months of August and September, when field surveys by Ng and colleagues found a higher proportion of males in full breeding colour.

Habitat

Parosphromenus harveyi is a stenotypic inhabitant of peat-swamp forests and their associated blackwater drainage streams in western Peninsular Malaysia. Its documented range is narrow: Selangor state, with FishBase also noting the Bernam River drainage. The peat-swamp environment is one of the world's most acidic and ion-poor freshwater habitats — dark-stained water rich in dissolved organics from partially decomposed vegetation, very soft, and extremely acidic.

SeriouslyFish records water chemistry parameters for this species of pH 3.0–6.5 and hardness 18–72 ppm, with temperatures of 72–82 °F. Like all labyrinth fishes, P. harveyi breathes atmospheric air via the suprabranchial labyrinth organ and can survive in the oxygen-depleted water typical of peat-swamp systems, where conventional gill-breathing is often inadequate. The fish occurs among leaf litter, submerged root masses, and debris on the swamp floor. Sympatric species in north Selangor peat swamps include Betta hipposideros, B. livida, Rasbora kalochroma, and Neohomaloptera johorensis.

Much of the former range has been converted to oil-palm and rubber plantations, or altered by drainage works. The species now persists in remnant swamp fragments and, remarkably, in some irrigation ditches and roadside canals where blackwater chemistry has been partially preserved.

Feeding

Parosphromenus harveyi is a micropredator. In its natural swamp habitat it takes tiny aquatic invertebrates — microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and other small organisms associated with leaf litter and the swamp substrate.

In captivity the fish requires suitably small live or frozen foods. Seriously Fish lists Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Moina, mosquito larvae, and microworm as appropriate prey. Dry or prepared foods are typically refused or accepted only reluctantly; the fish's small gape and predatory instincts are not well matched to flake. A diet centred on variety of suitably sized live and frozen invertebrates is essential for long-term health and for bringing fish into breeding condition.

Mating

Courtship in Parosphromenus harveyi follows the pattern characteristic of the harveyi group within the genus: the male adopts a head-down position and displays to the female with fully spread fins, allowing her to assess his fin colouration and fin extension. The iridescent blue of the pelvic filaments and the banded pattern of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are the primary visual signals.

The male establishes a small territory around a cave or crevice — in nature a space beneath a leaf, a root hollow, or an overhang of substrate — and displays from its entrance. Once a receptive female approaches and courtship succeeds, spawning takes place inside the cave. The male is the sole provider of parental care after spawning; the female plays no further role once eggs are deposited.

Breeding

Parosphromenus harveyi is a cave spawner. Spawning takes place inside a small enclosed space, which in the wild may be a leaf-litter pocket, a root cavity, or a space beneath an overhang. The male may attach eggs to the cave ceiling or construct a small, rudimentary bubble cluster to hold them; both parents may initially handle eggs immediately post-release, but the female is subsequently excluded and the male alone broods the clutch.

The EAZA guidelines record an incubation period consistent with Seriously Fish's figure of approximately 24–36 hours for hatching, with fry becoming mobile after 4–6 days and fully free-swimming at 7–11 days. The fry are very small at emergence and require infusoria-grade first foods. Post-hatch development can extend over a period of weeks before the juveniles are independent. Maintaining the male in the cave vicinity undisturbed is critical during the brooding period; disturbance commonly leads to abandonment.

In the aquarium

Parosphromenus harveyi is a demanding species that rewards the specialist keeper prepared to replicate blackwater peat-swamp conditions accurately. A small, heavily planted or leaf-littered aquarium of 10–15 US gal is sufficient for a pair or small group; the species does not need space so much as security. Water must be extremely soft and acidic — pH in the range of 3.5–6.5, with minimal hardness — and can be conditioned with peat filtration, alder cones, or dried Indian almond (Terminalia catappa) leaves, which also provide shelter and acidify the water naturally. Temperatures should be kept in the 72–81 °F range; the EAZA guidelines suggest that maintaining cooler temperatures (around 72 °F in winter, 79 °F in summer) may extend lifespan.

Filtration must be extremely gentle — strong current is incompatible with the species' still, swamp-water origins. A small sponge filter or slow-moving hang-on filter with the outlet baffled is appropriate. Surface access for air-breathing is essential; the fish is a labyrinth fish and must be able to reach the water surface freely. The tank must be covered, as P. harveyi will jump. Small cave structures — half coconut shells, stacked ceramic tubes, or flat stones leaned against the glass — are not optional decoration but necessary spawning sites. Tankmates, if any, should be strictly limited to other blackwater dwellers of similar size and temperament.

The Parosphromenus Project, an international hobbyist network, maintains breeding records and conservation advocacy for the genus and is the primary community resource for keepers of P. harveyi. The project emphasises that maintaining captive breeding lines is a conservation obligation given the precarious state of wild populations.

Conservation

Parosphromenus harveyi is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment recorded as 14 January 2019 by FishBase. The primary driver of decline is habitat destruction: the peat-swamp forests of Selangor have been extensively cleared for oil-palm cultivation, rubber plantations, and urban development, and drainage works have altered the hydrology of surviving fragments. The EAZA Best Practice Guidelines note that habitat previously documented as supporting P. harveyi has been destroyed outright.

The species' narrow natural range — restricted to a small area of western Peninsular Malaysia — makes it acutely vulnerable to any further habitat contraction. The Parosphromenus Project has documented the species surviving in some roadside canals and irrigation ditches where residual blackwater chemistry persists, but these are fragile refugia. Captive breeding in specialist hobbyist collections is now an important component of any informal conservation effort, and the Parosphromenus Project actively coordinates the maintenance of captive populations to prevent genetic erosion.
