Taxonomy & naming
Parosphromenus nagyi was described by Schaller in 1985. It belongs to the genus Parosphromenus, a group of diminutive labyrinth fishes (family Osphronemidae) restricted to the Sundaland lowlands of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. The genus is colloquially known as the licorice gouramis, a name that reflects the dark, laterally striped patterning shared across many species. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name Parosphromenus nagyi Schaller, 1985.
The specific epithet nagyi is a patronym, honouring the individual for whom the species was named at the time of its description. Within Parosphromenus, P. nagyi is one of several Malaysian coastal-plain species and is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of colour pattern and fin characters. The genus as a whole is under active taxonomic revision, and new species continue to be described from previously overlooked localities across Sundaland.
Morphology
Parosphromenus nagyi is a small fish, reaching around 1–1.5 in (approximately 1–1.5 in) total length. Like all members of the genus, it has an elongate, laterally compressed body with pointed fins and the characteristic suprabranchial labyrinth organ that enables it to breathe atmospheric air directly at the surface — an adaptation critical in the oxygen-depleted waters it inhabits.
Males display the vivid pattern typical of the genus: a dark lateral stripe against a paler body, with coloured fin margins or iridescent highlights that intensify during courtship. Females are duller, with reduced colour and more rounded fins. The caudal fin of displaying males often shows elongated central rays. As with most Parosphromenus, the colour display is most pronounced when males encounter rivals or court females, and can seem almost washed out in a resting fish under dim lighting.
Habitat
In the wild, Parosphromenus nagyi is recorded from peat-swamp forests and associated blackwater streams along the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, in the Terengganu and Pahang coastal zone, from the Cherating to Nenasi area. These are among the most chemically extreme freshwater environments on Earth: the water is darkly stained with dissolved humic and fulvic acids leached from the accumulating peat, yielding a pH that can be as low as 3.0–3.5 and conductivity so low it barely registers — Seriously Fish records values around 18 µS/cm. Temperature in the shallow, heavily shaded forest interior tends to be moderate, around 72 °F.
The peat-swamp environment is perpetually shaded by closed-canopy forest, which keeps temperatures relatively stable and sunlight dim. The water flows slowly or is nearly still, with almost no dissolved minerals and negligible buffering capacity. These are conditions that exclude most freshwater fish — Parosphromenus nagyi is one of a small community of specialists that have evolved to exploit them. The labyrinth organ is not merely useful here but necessary: the still, warm, humic water is chronically low in dissolved oxygen, and the ability to gulp air at the surface is essential for survival.
Feeding
Parosphromenus nagyi is a micropredator, feeding on tiny invertebrates in the wild. Its small mouth and compact body are adapted to hunting the microcrustaceans, insect larvae, and other minute organisms that inhabit the leaf litter and water column of peat-swamp streams.
In captivity, it should be offered live or frozen micro-foods: Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Moina, mosquito larvae, and similar small invertebrates. The EAZA Best Practice Guidelines for the genus also list grindal worm, microworm, vinegar eel, and copepods as suitable foods. Dried and prepared foods are generally accepted poorly by Parosphromenus; a diet of predominantly live foods is strongly recommended to keep the fish in breeding condition and good health. Small, frequent feedings suit the species better than one large daily meal.
Mating
Parosphromenus nagyi is a cave spawner: males court females and spawn in enclosed spaces such as crevices in submerged wood, cave-like shelters formed by leaf litter or root tangles, or small shells and tubes. This is the characteristic breeding mode of the entire genus and distinguishes Parosphromenus sharply from open bubble-nesting gouramis such as Trichogaster. The male's display — intensified fin colour, spread fins, and lateral presentation — occurs at the entrance to the chosen cave site.
Pair bonds in Parosphromenus are described as temporary and formed for the duration of spawning. Males select and defend a cave and actively court passing females. When a female is receptive, the pair enter the cave together, spawn in close contact, and the male subsequently takes over guard duties. Rival males are driven away from the spawning cave during this period.
Breeding
Spawning takes place inside the cave, where the male constructs a small cluster of bubbles on the ceiling or overhang — not an open bubble nest on the surface, but a confined bubble platform that holds the eggs in place within the shelter. The female deposits a small number of eggs during each spawning embrace, and these adhere to the bubble mass or cave ceiling. The female is typically expelled from the cave after spawning.
The male provides all subsequent parental care, guarding the eggs and fanning the clutch to maintain water circulation. Incubation times vary with temperature; hatching typically occurs within a few days, and the male continues to guard the fry for a period after they become free-swimming. Fry are small and require the finest available live foods — infusoria or rotifers initially, graduating to Artemia nauplii and Moina. Breeding in captivity requires suitably soft, acid water and provision of cave structures; without these the species is unlikely to spawn successfully.
In the aquarium
Parosphromenus nagyi is a demanding species, not suitable for the general community tank. Its strict water-chemistry requirements — very soft, ultra-acidic water with pH typically in the range of 3.5–5.0 and negligible hardness — must be replicated carefully. Reverse-osmosis water, reconstituted with peat extract or commercially prepared blackwater conditioner, is the standard approach; pH buffers are generally unnecessary and may be counterproductive. FishBase records pH 4.5–5.0 and dH around 5 as suitable; the EAZA guidelines note pH around 4 (with the genus thriving down to 3.4–3.8 in the wild).
Temperature should be kept in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius (68–77 °F), matching the shaded, cool-ish conditions of peat-swamp forest interiors. The tank should be heavily planted with low-light vegetation, well covered with floating plants to reduce surface turbulence and dim the light, and furnished with small caves — ceramic tubes, coconut shells, or small clay pots work well. Filtration should be gentle: a sponge filter is ideal, as strong currents are unwelcome and the ultra-soft water provides no carbonate buffering against pH swings caused by high flow and CO₂ off-gassing.
Parosphromenus nagyi is best kept as a species tank or with only very small, non-competitive companions. Males may display aggression toward each other, though in a sufficiently furnished tank a small group can coexist. The species is assessed as Vulnerable, and EAZA guidelines stress the importance of maintaining genetic diversity in captive populations; sourcing fish from responsible hobbyist or conservation breeding programmes is strongly preferred over wild-caught specimens.
Conservation
Parosphromenus nagyi is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment confirming VU status as of 2019. The principal threat is habitat loss: the peat-swamp forests of Peninsular Malaysia's east coast have been dramatically reduced by drainage, conversion to oil palm and other agriculture, logging, and peat fires. Peat swamps are not easily restored once drained — the peat oxidises and the hydrological regime that maintains the characteristic blackwater chemistry is lost.
The species' range is narrow, limited to a section of the Terengganu–Pahang coastal strip. Even within that range, suitable intact peat-swamp habitat is fragmented and continuing to decline. Collection for the ornamental trade has historically added pressure, though captive breeding in the specialist gourami hobby has reduced demand for wild-caught fish to some extent. The Parosphromenus Project, an organisation of hobbyists dedicated to this genus, actively promotes captive breeding as a conservation measure and documents the remaining wild populations. Maintaining genetically diverse captive populations and protecting the remaining peat-swamp habitat are the two pillars of any realistic conservation strategy for this species.
