Parosphromenus pahuensis is a diminutive licorice gourami reaching barely 1 in standard length, confined to the blackwater peat swamp forests of the Mahakam River drainage in Kalimantan Timur, Indonesian Borneo. Named for its type locality near Muarapahu, this species was essentially unknown in the hobby until a single breeding pair arrived in Japan in 2008, making it one of the rarest licorice gouramis in captivity. The IUCN assessed it as Endangered in 2019, citing ongoing peat swamp destruction across its already tiny range.

Taxonomy & naming

Parosphromenus pahuensis was described by Maurice Kottelat and Kelvin K.P. Ng in 2005 in their revision of the genus Parosphromenus, which remains the authoritative systematic treatment of the licorice gouramis. The type locality is Muarapahu, in the Mahakam River drainage of Kalimantan Timur, East Borneo, Indonesia. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Parosphromenus pahuensis Kottelat & Ng, 2005.

The species belongs to the family Osphronemidae and is one of roughly two dozen recognised Parosphromenus species, a genus restricted to the Sundaland blackwater habitats of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Within the genus it is distinguished from most congeners by a combination of one to three black spots embedded in the midlateral dark stripe and a rounded rather than lanceolate caudal fin, a character state shared with relatively few Parosphromenus species. Meristically it carries 12–14 dorsal spines, 5–7 dorsal soft rays, 13–14 anal spines, and 6–9 anal soft rays.

Morphology

Parosphromenus pahuensis is among the smallest members of its already diminutive genus, reaching a maximum of 1 in standard length. The body plan is slender and laterally compressed, with the elongated anal fin base and relatively long dorsal fin characteristic of the licorice gouramis. The caudal fin is distinctly rounded, a feature that separates it from the lanceolate-tailed species such as P. filamentosus.

Live colouration in the Parosphromenus is often most intense during courtship and territorial display. The midlateral region carries a dark longitudinal stripe within which one to three black spots are embedded — a diagnostic feature. As with other licorice gouramis, males in breeding condition display intensified body colours and fin markings, while females are typically plainer with rounder abdomens. The small adult size is consistent with life in shallow, enclosed peat swamp microhabitats where competition with larger species is limited.

Habitat

In the wild, Parosphromenus pahuensis inhabits small blackwater forest streams within peat swamp forests of the Mahakam River drainage in Kalimantan Timur. These environments are among the most chemically distinctive freshwater habitats on Earth: water is stained dark brown by dissolved humic and fulvic acids leaching from waterlogged peat, and conductivity is extremely low. pH values in intact peat swamp seepages frequently fall below 4.0, and total dissolved solids are negligible.

Such conditions support almost no carbonate buffering, meaning that even modest atmospheric CO₂ exchange can measurably shift pH. The water is very soft, warm (typically 75–82 °F in the lowland Borneo climate), and often nearly static in pools and backwaters beneath the dense forest canopy. Oxygen levels can be low in stagnant pools, but Parosphromenus and all osphronemids are labyrinth fishes — they breathe atmospheric air via the suprabranchial organ and are therefore tolerant of hypoxic conditions that would be lethal to obligate gill-breathers. Surface access for air-breathing is essential to survival.

This stenotopic reliance on intact peat swamp blackwater makes P. pahuensis particularly vulnerable to any hydrological change in its small, geographically restricted drainage.

Feeding

Parosphromenus pahuensis is a micropredator in the wild, subsisting on tiny invertebrates encountered in the peat-swamp leaf litter and water column: small aquatic insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and other zooplankton-sized prey. The blackwater environment supports a sparse but specialised invertebrate community, and these small gouramis forage patiently among submerged plant roots, leaf debris, and the biofilm coating submerged surfaces.

In captivity the species requires live or frozen small foods, particularly in the early stages of settling in. Newly hatched brine shrimp, micro worms, Cyclops nauplii, and vinegar eels are the staples for adults and essential for fry. The species may be reluctant to accept dried or processed foods, and its long-term health depends on maintaining live food cultures as a dietary cornerstone.

Mating

Parosphromenus pahuensis is a cave-spawning species in which the male takes primary responsibility for securing a spawning site and guarding the resulting brood. Courtship involves extended pair-swimming with complex mutual signalling — hobbyists who have bred the species report that P. pahuensis shows more active and protracted pair-courtship behaviours compared with some congeners, with the male and female engaging in close parallel swimming and display sequences before spawning is initiated.

Spawning sites are enclosed spaces: the interior of a small cave, beneath an overhanging leaf, within a crevice, or under the roof of a coconut-shell half. The substrate-preference in captivity aligns closely with what the species would encounter in the tangled root mats and leaf accumulations of its peat swamp home. The female's role largely ends at egg deposition; the male remains in attendance.

Breeding

Following spawning inside the chosen cave or crevice, the male of Parosphromenus pahuensis tends the eggs and guards the site. A small clutch of eggs is deposited on the cave ceiling or interior surfaces, sometimes accompanied by a minimal bubble cluster to hold eggs in place — a feature seen in various cave-spawning osphronemids. The female does not survive long after spawning in most documented captive cases, a pattern reported by hobbyists working with the species in Europe after the first breeding pair arrived from Japan in 2008; the species was successfully bred in captivity in Europe by 2011.

Fry are cryptic and difficult to locate in the spawning vessel. Once free-swimming, they require live first foods: vinegar eels and micro worms are the standard starting diet, with newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii introduced as the fry grow. Water quality must be maintained carefully, as fry from blackwater species are especially sensitive to deteriorating conditions. Given the rarity of this species in captivity, any successful breeding represents a meaningful contribution to maintaining a captive population of a fish that is Endangered in the wild.

In the aquarium

Parosphromenus pahuensis is exceptionally rare in captivity and demands the dedicated attention of a specialist keeper rather than a community aquarist. The species is secretive and shy, spending much of its time close to cover, and will be outcompeted or stressed by any tankmates. A dedicated species tank — small in volume, heavily planted or furnished with leaf litter and hiding places, and running at very low pH and conductivity — is the appropriate setting.

Water chemistry must replicate the Borneo blackwater conditions of the wild: pH ideally between 3.5 and 5.0, negligible hardness, temperature in the range of 75–82 °F. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter is appropriate — to maintain near-still water and avoid pH destabilisation. Surface access for air breathing must never be obstructed. Tannin-rich conditions achieved with Indian almond leaves, peat filtration, or dried leaf litter help reproduce the humic environment and appear to support the fish's health and willingness to spawn.

Because the species is so rarely available and has been almost entirely absent from European collections, any individual in captivity today likely traces to the small founder population bred from the pair obtained in 2008. Prospective keepers should seek connection with the Parosphromenus Project community, which coordinates captive-husbandry knowledge and occasional specimen exchange among dedicated breeders.

Conservation

Parosphromenus pahuensis was assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List in January 2019 under criterion B1ab(iii). The assessment recorded an extent of occurrence below 5,0 mi², presence at only three threat-defined locations, and ongoing decline in the extent and quality of peat swamp forest habitat throughout its Kalimantan Timur range. Population trend is listed as unknown.

The principal threat is conversion of peat swamp forest to industrial forestry and monoculture plantation — above all oil palm — which eliminates the specific hydrological conditions that blackwater streams require. Drainage of peat swamps for agriculture removes the acidic, tannin-rich groundwater inputs that sustain the extreme chemistry on which stenotopic species like P. pahuensis depend. Once peat is drained and oxidised it cannot readily be restored. Fire, a persistent secondary threat linked to land clearance, causes additional direct habitat loss.

The species appears essentially absent from the commercial aquarium trade, with no substantial export documented. The small captive population maintained by specialist hobbyists connected through the Parosphromenus Project represents the only safety net outside the wild population. Continued captive propagation and habitat protection in the Mahakam drainage are both necessary for the species' long-term survival.
