Parosphromenus parvulus is one of the smallest members of a genus already celebrated for miniaturism — adults reach barely 1 in total length, making this Bornean licorice gourami among the tiniest labyrinth fishes kept by aquarists. It inhabits the blackwater peat-swamp creeks of Indonesian Borneo, where water so acidic it approaches vinegar (pH 4.8–5.5) drains through dense mats of leaf litter and grass at the forest edge. Assessed as Vulnerable by the IUCN in 2019, it faces the same existential pressure confronting most Sundaland peat-swamp endemics: the rapid loss and degradation of its peat-swamp habitat across Borneo.

Taxonomy & naming

Parosphromenus parvulus was described by Jörg Vierke in 1979. The type locality, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is the Mentaya River system approximately 250 kilometres northwest of Banjarmasin, in Indonesian Borneo (Kalimantan). Eschmeyer's Catalog confirms the name as valid, with authority Vierke, 1979.

The genus Parosphromenus belongs to the family Osphronemidae within the order Anabantiformes. Commonly called licorice gouramis, the roughly 30-odd species in the genus are the dominant osphronemid radiation of the peat-swamp and blackwater stream habitats of the Sundaland shelf — the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Parosphromenus species are distinguished from other small gouramis by their elongated, often filamentous dorsal, anal, and tail fin rays in breeding males, and by their exclusive reliance on cave or crevice spawning.

Parosphromenus parvulus has been noted in specialist literature for a courtship posture — a distinctive head-up tilting display — that sets it apart behaviourally from some congeners, and this characteristic has been discussed in the context of possible future taxonomic revision. The Parosphromenus Project, which documents the genus in detail, has flagged these behavioural differences, though no formal re-description has been published.

Morphology

Parosphromenus parvulus is a dwarf species reaching approximately 1 in total length, placing it among the smallest of all osphronemids. The body is slender and elongated, somewhat laterally compressed, with the rounded profile typical of the genus. Like all labyrinth fishes, it possesses a suprabranchial labyrinth organ — a vascularised accessory breathing structure that allows direct air respiration and underpins the species' ability to survive the oxygen-poor waters of peat swamps.

Breeding males develop extended filamentous rays on the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins — the species' most conspicuous morphological characters — and display intense colouration during courtship. The precise colour pattern of P. parvulus in full breeding dress follows the genus's general scheme of iridescent blues and reds against a darker base, though the details differ between species and are difficult to capture in preserved specimens. Females and non-displaying males are considerably plainer, showing a brownish or tan ground with a dark lateral stripe. Sexual dimorphism is primarily expressed through fin length and display colouration rather than body shape.

Habitat

Parosphromenus parvulus occurs in Borneo, Indonesia, in the drainage of the Mentaya River system of central Kalimantan. The habitat is the classic Sundaland peat-swamp biotype: slow-moving to almost stagnant creeks at the margins of peat-swamp forest, heavily shaded by canopy and choked with grass, aquatic plants, leaf litter, submerged roots, and decaying organic matter. FishBase records the species as benthopelagic and non-migratory, associated with creeks at the edge of rainforest between grass and plant debris.

Water chemistry in these habitats is extreme by any tropical-fish standard. The pH at recorded collection sites spans 4.8–5.5, reflecting the tannin and humic-acid load from decomposing peat. Hardness is negligible; conductivity is typically near zero. Water temperatures range roughly 72–82 °F, and dissolved oxygen is low — a condition that makes the labyrinth organ essential rather than supplementary. The EAZA Best Practice Guidelines for Parosphromenus note that pH values as low as 3.7 have been recorded at sites where P. parvulus is syntopic with P. filamentosus, underlining just how acidic these systems can be.

Feeding

In the wild Parosphromenus parvulus forages among leaf litter and plant debris for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and similarly sized prey items — at or near the substrate. Given its small mouth and diminutive body size, prey must be correspondingly tiny.

In captivity the species requires live or frozen invertebrate foods; it does not reliably accept dried or prepared foods, particularly when newly imported or when kept under suboptimal conditions. Newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), microworms, Daphnia, and other micro-live foods are the staples. The EAZA guidelines emphasise that live invertebrate foods are essential for maintaining good condition and for stimulating breeding behaviour. This dietary specialisation is one of the factors that restricts P. parvulus — and licorice gouramis generally — to dedicated specialist keepers.

Mating

Parosphromenus parvulus is a cave spawner. Males establish and defend small territories centred on a spawning cave — a crevice, hollow, or the underside of a flat stone or piece of bark — and invest considerable energy in advertising these sites to females. Courtship involves intensive fin displays in which the male spreads and fans his elaborately extended dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, flashing colour to a prospective mate.

A behavioural trait noted for P. parvulus is a pronounced head-up body tilting during courtship, which differs from the typical near-horizontal display posture of many congeners. This posture has been flagged by the Parosphromenus Project as a potentially diagnosable character. Once a female is receptive she approaches the cave and the pair engage in close courtship inside or immediately in front of it, eventually entering to spawn.

Breeding

Spawning takes place inside the cave or crevice. Eggs are deposited in small clusters, often affixed to the ceiling or walls of the cavity, sometimes within a loose bubble structure produced by the male. The clutch is modest — typical of the genus, spanning a few dozen eggs at most — and the male assumes sole responsibility for guarding and tending the eggs after the female has been expelled or has left. He may continue to produce bubbles and physically tend the eggs until hatching.

Incubation in soft acidic water at typical temperatures (75–81 °F) proceeds over roughly two to three days. The male guards the larval and early fry stage, but parental care diminishes as the fry become free-swimming. At that point the male should generally be removed to prevent predation on the fry. Rearing requires extremely soft, acidic water — the EAZA guidelines recommend pH as low as 4.0–5.0 for this genus — and very fine first foods such as infusoria and paramecia before graduating to Artemia nauplii. Successful captive breeding is achievable but demands close attention to water chemistry, which must match the species' blackwater origins closely.

In the aquarium

Parosphromenus parvulus is strictly a specialist's fish. It is not suited to community tanks or standard tropical setups, and its requirements sit well outside what most aquarium guides would consider normal. A dedicated species or genus biotope aquarium is the appropriate setting: a small, heavily shaded tank with very soft, very acidic water (pH 4.5–5.5, preferably toward the lower end; hardness below 5 dGH), gentle filtration producing minimal current, and a deep layer of leaf litter and fine botanical material over a dark substrate. Tannin sources — catappa leaves, beech leaves, peat filtration, blackwater extract — are not optional decorative choices; they are part of the chemical environment the fish requires.

Temperature should be maintained between 22 and 82 °F. Hiding places — coconut halves, small clay caves, hollow driftwood, or ceramic tubes — are essential, as males must have cave sites to display and breed. The species is small, timid, and slow-moving, and even moderate water flow or boisterous tankmates will suppress it. Given its tiny size and demanding water requirements, P. parvulus is best kept by experienced aquarists who have already worked successfully with soft-water blackwater species. As a facultative air-breather, the fish must have unobstructed access to the water surface; a tight-fitting lid reduces surface turbulence and prevents jumping.

Conservation

Parosphromenus parvulus is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), based on an assessment date of 27 December 2018 (published 2019). The listing reflects a restricted and declining extent of occurrence combined with ongoing habitat loss. The primary threat is the destruction and degradation of peat-swamp forest across Borneo, driven by conversion of peat lands to oil-palm and pulpwood plantations, drainage for agriculture, fire, and peat subsidence following drainage. These forces have eliminated or severely degraded vast areas of the lowland peat-swamp forest that constitutes the species' only known habitat type in Kalimantan.

As a species with a small natural range, dependence on a very specific and heavily threatened habitat type, and poor dispersal ability across a fragmented landscape, P. parvulus is highly vulnerable to further decline. The IUCN assessment notes the species' exposure to the broad anthropogenic pressures bearing on SE Asian peat-swamp endemics. In captivity, dedicated specialist hobbyists and organisations such as the Parosphromenus Project maintain breeding stocks, which represent an important ex-situ resource for a genus in which many species are rarely or never seen in trade and whose wild habitats continue to shrink.
