Taxonomy & naming
Parosphromenus quindecim was described by Maurice Kottelat and Heok Hui Ng in 2005 from material collected in the Sungai Pawan drainage of Kalimantan Barat, Indonesian Borneo. The type locality coordinates are approximately 1°30'02"S, 110°34'19"E. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Parosphromenus quindecim Kottelat & Ng, 2005.
The specific epithet quindecim is Latin for fifteen, a reference to the species' dorsal-fin ray formula: the dorsal carries XIII–XV spines together with additional soft rays, yielding fifteen to seventeen total rays — a notably high count within the genus and one of the meristic traits that distinguishes it from close relatives. Prior to its formal description the fish circulated in the hobby under the provisional trade label 'Parosphromenus spec. Manis-Mata', a locality name attached to early exports.
Parosphromenus is a genus of miniature labyrinth fishes (family Osphronemidae, subfamily Macropodusinae) endemic to the Sundaic peat-swamp forests of Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula. P. quindecim belongs to the 'paludicola group' of species sharing multi-coloured banded unpaired fins, and at up to 2 in total length it stands among the largest species in a genus where most members barely reach 1–1.5 in.
Morphology
Parosphromenus quindecim is compact and laterally compressed, reaching approximately 1 in standard length in males as recorded on FishBase, with total length reported up to 2 in. It is one of the largest Parosphromenus species, and the body profile is robust relative to the slender forms typical of the genus.
The dorsal fin is the species' distinguishing meristic marker, carrying XIII–XV spines — the specific epithet commemorates this count. The unpaired fins of adult males display a striking multi-banded pattern: a whitish outer margin, a black subdistal band, an inner zone of iridescent blue-green, and a basal region of red-brown. The caudal fin is additionally marked with irregular black spots along its edge, a feature that separates P. quindecim from similar banded species. Females are considerably less vivid; they are typically pale yellowish to olivaceous, though dominant females in a stable group can develop noticeably deeper colouration. The labyrinth organ, a folded vascular chamber above the gill arch, enables the species to breathe atmospheric air — an adaptation critical to survival in the oxygen-depleted blackwaters it inhabits.
Habitat
The wild range of Parosphromenus quindecim is centred on the Sungai Pawan and Sungai Liong basins of Kalimantan Barat, with early collections made north of Nanga Tayap. It is a stenotypic peat-swamp species, meaning it is effectively restricted to the blackwater streams and flooded forests that overlie deep, acidic peat deposits — one of the most chemically extreme freshwater environments on earth.
The water in these systems is deeply stained with tannins and humic acids leached from decomposing plant material, producing tea-coloured to almost opaque brown conditions with extremely low conductivity, pH in the range of 3.0–6.5, and temperatures typically between 22 and 82 °F. Dissolved oxygen is low and light penetration is poor. The fish is associated with leaf litter, submerged roots, and the dark sheltered microhabitats formed by fallen timber and dense riparian vegetation — all the structural complexity that provides both foraging sites and refugia.
The labyrinth organ is an indispensable adaptation here: the ability to gulp air from the surface allows the species to persist in water that would be lethally hypoxic for obligate gill-breathers. Still or near-still water is the norm; there is no current-adapted morphology in this species.
Feeding
Parosphromenus quindecim is a micropredator, taking tiny live invertebrates as the bulk of its natural diet. In blackwater peat swamps the available prey includes micro-crustaceans, midge larvae, small worms, and other minute arthropods filtering through the leaf litter and water column.
In captivity the species accepts small live and frozen foods readily: newly hatched brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii), Daphnia, mosquito larvae, and micro-worms are all reported as suitable. Like most Parosphromenus, it has a small gape and limited competitive drive, meaning it is easily outcompeted at feeding by more assertive tankmates and does best when offered food that sinks slowly through its preferred lower and mid-water zone.
Mating
Parosphromenus quindecim is a cave spawner, not an open bubble-nester. Pair formation precedes spawning, and the male's courtship display is performed in a horizontal posture — a characteristic shared with other cave-spawning Parosphromenus — in contrast to the vertical displays typical of open bubble-nesting gouramis. During courtship the male fans his banded unpaired fins to their greatest extent, presenting the full spectacle of white, black, blue and red-brown banding to the female.
The species is territorial, and space between pairs must be adequate to allow stable pair bonds to develop without constant disruption. Low conductivity and strongly acidic water appear necessary not only for breeding success but for the males' fin colouration to reach peak intensity; fish kept in harder or more neutral water remain duller and may not spawn.
Breeding
Spawning takes place inside a cave, crevice, or beneath an overhang — in captivity, purpose-made ceramic caves, coconut shells, or short sections of bamboo all serve. Eggs are deposited on the cave ceiling or wall in a small cluster, sometimes accompanied by a loose raft of bubbles, and the male assumes sole care of the clutch, fanning and guarding the eggs.
Incubation at typical temperatures (75–82 °F) lasts roughly 24–36 hours before hatching, and the fry become free-swimming and mobile after approximately four to six days. Clutch sizes can reach 100 or more eggs in productive pairs. The fry are very small at first and require appropriately minute first foods — infusoria or commercial micro-fry preparations — before accepting Artemia nauplii. Acidic, very soft water with near-zero conductivity is the key parameter for successful breeding; hardness or pH above the species' natural range commonly results in spawning failure or poor fry survival.
In the aquarium
Parosphromenus quindecim is a specialist fish for the committed blackwater aquarist. A tank of 45 × 12 in or larger is suggested for a pair or small group, heavily furnished with dried leaf litter, driftwood, and caves or overhangs that provide visual breaks and spawning sites. Filtration should produce minimal water movement — a sponge filter or very gentle hang-on-back is appropriate; strong current is both physiologically stressful and discourages the low-conductivity conditions the species requires.
Water chemistry is non-negotiable: pH in the range of 4.0–6.5 and conductivity as close to zero as practicable, achieved with RO or rain water and conditioned with peat, dried leaves, or commercially produced blackwater extract. Temperature should sit in the 75–82 °F band. The surface must remain accessible at all times for air-breathing. The species must never be kept with larger, more assertive fishes; nano companions of similar temperament and water-chemistry requirements — small rasboras such as Boraras species, or other Parosphromenus — are the safest choices.
Given its rarity in trade since around 2006, most specimens now come from specialist breeders within the Parosphromenus Project network. Sourcing captive-bred fish both supports conservation and ensures animals already acclimated to aquarium conditions.
Conservation
Parosphromenus quindecim is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating to 2019. The primary driver of its precarious status is habitat loss: the peat-swamp forests of Kalimantan have been cleared and drained on a massive scale for oil palm plantations, pulpwood concessions, and subsistence agriculture. Peat drainage alters the hydrology and water chemistry of surrounding streams permanently, and the burning that often accompanies land clearance destroys the near-surface peat layer that underpins the entire aquatic ecosystem.
P. quindecim's known range is small — the Sungai Pawan and Sungai Liong basins — and the species' strict dependence on intact peat-swamp conditions means there is almost no capacity to colonise degraded or alternative habitat. Specimens have been documented in a German zoological collection (Tierpark Berlin), and the Parosphromenus Project has maintained ex-situ breeding lines in Europe, which represent an important genetic reservoir. The species entered the aquarium trade briefly between 2001 and approximately 2006 via the German importer Glaser; it has not appeared in significant numbers since, and any specimens encountered today should be assumed to originate from captive breeding programmes.
