Parosphromenus sumatranus is a tiny licorice gourami — barely 1 in standard length — endemic to a handful of peat-swamp river basins in Jambi province, south Sumatra, where the water is almost unimaginably soft and acidic: field measurements record a pH of 4.72 and conductivity as low as 4 µS/cm. Despite its miniature size, males display subtle but real colour: light red bands in the dorsal and anal fins, a diagnostic narrow dark band along the body-anal fin border, and a conspicuous black spot at the rear base of the dorsal fin that separates this species from its two closest relatives. Like every other licorice gourami, it is a secretive cave-spawning labyrinth fish whose future in the wild is threatened by the rapid destruction of lowland Sumatran peat-swamp forest.

Taxonomy & naming

Parosphromenus sumatranus was described by Wolfgang Klausewitz in 1955, making it one of the earlier-described members of a genus that has expanded considerably since — particularly following surveys of Borneo and Sumatra in recent decades. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid name as Parosphromenus sumatranus Klausewitz, 1955. The type locality is Sumatra, consistent with the species' known range in the Jambi district of south Sumatra.

The species belongs to the family Osphronemidae and the subfamily Macropodusinae. Within Parosphromenus it shows an unusual courtship posture — a head-up display that it shares within the genus only with P. ornaticauda and P. parvulus — which has led observers to note a structural affinity between these three species despite their geographically dispersed ranges. Two morphological variants of P. sumatranus have been documented: one with a high-backed body typical of most licorice gouramis, and one leaner form with a lower back profile resembling P. ornaticauda or P. parvulus. Whether these represent geographical or individual variation has not been formally resolved.

In the aquarium trade the species has been exported occasionally and is sometimes mis-labelled as P. deissneri, a superficially similar Sumatran congener. The diagnostic character most useful for field and trade identification is the conspicuous black spot at the posterior base of the dorsal fin, combined with the narrow dark band running along the body-anal fin border — features that distinguish it from both P. deissneri and P. bintan.

Morphology

Parosphromenus sumatranus is among the smaller members of an already diminutive genus, reaching a maximum of about 1 in standard length (FishBase) or around 1.5 in total length (Parosphromenus Project). Like other licorice gouramis, it is laterally compressed with a rounded snout and relatively large eyes, and carries a pair of elongate pelvic fins whose first ray is produced into a filament — a typical Parosphromenus feature used in courtship signalling.

Colouration in males is subdued at rest but brightens during display. The most consistent diagnostic features are the black spot at the posterior base of the dorsal fin, light red bands in the dorsal and anal fins, and a narrow dark band paralleling the body-anal fin border from behind the pectoral fin to the caudal peduncle. The caudal fin is pale red to black-red and occasionally shows a short single caudal filament, though this is not consistently developed. Two structural body forms have been noted in the species — a high-backed typical form and a leaner, lower-backed form — but coloration patterns appear consistent across both.

Females are typically drabber, lacking the red fin banding and showing less contrast in the body stripe; distinguishing females from those of closely related species in the trade is difficult without reference to accompanying males.

Habitat

Parosphromenus sumatranus is endemic to Sumatra, known from river basins in the Jambi district: the Sungai Ayer Merah, Sungai Pijoan, Sungai Siak Kecil, and Sungai Sentang. These systems drain lowland peat-swamp forest — one of the most chemically extreme freshwater habitats on Earth. Field measurements from P. sumatranus habitat recorded a pH of 4.72 and electrical conductivity of just 4 µS/cm, reflecting water that is essentially mineral-free and strongly tannin-stained from decomposing organic matter. Water temperatures in these systems are warm but not extreme, typically in the tropical range.

The peat-swamp environment is still, slow-moving, and seasonally shaded by closed forest canopy. Dissolved oxygen levels are low in the deeper layers of such habitats, and the fish's labyrinth organ — a suprabranchial air-breathing structure — is essential for survival in conditions that would be fatal to an obligate gill-breather. The species occupies shallow margins and dense leaf-litter accumulations where small invertebrates concentrate and cover is available for both foraging and spawning.

This extreme habitat specificity is both ecologically fascinating and conservation-critical: P. sumatranus cannot survive or colonise mineral-rich or neutral-pH water, which means that even partial drainage or agricultural runoff into its native swamps renders habitat immediately unusable.

Feeding

In the wild, Parosphromenus sumatranus feeds on the small invertebrates — microcrustaceans, chironomid larvae, and other tiny aquatic animals — that inhabit the leaf-litter and submerged vegetation of its peat-swamp home. Its small mouth limits it to correspondingly small prey items.

In captivity it accepts live and frozen microfoods: Daphnia, Moina, newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii, micro-worms, and similar small live foods are ideal. Frozen bloodworm may be taken by larger individuals. Dry foods are generally refused or ignored; sustained good health and breeding condition depend on a diet based primarily on live or frozen invertebrates. Its metabolic demands are modest given its size, but regular small feedings of appropriate prey produce far better condition than infrequent larger meals.

Mating

Parosphromenus sumatranus is a cave or substrate spawner — eggs are placed inside a cave, crevice, or beneath an overhang, typically on the ceiling of a small cavity. This is consistent with the reproductive mode of the genus as a whole and is entirely distinct from the open bubble-nest building of larger osphronemids such as Trichogaster or Betta splendens.

Courtship in this species is distinctive within the genus: males adopt a head-up posture to display to females, a behaviour shared in Parosphromenus only with P. ornaticauda and P. parvulus. During display, males intensify the red banding in the dorsal and anal fins, erect the fins fully, and use the extended pelvic fin filaments as tactile and visual signals. Observations in large tanks have documented simultaneous courtship of multiple pairs, suggesting that the presence of several pairs may stimulate synchronised breeding activity — an unusual social dynamic for so small and shy a fish. Once a female is ready, the pair retreats together into a spawning cavity.

Breeding

Spawning takes place inside a sheltered cavity — a crevice, a small cave, or under an overhang — where the male attaches a small cluster of eggs to the ceiling or inner wall surface, often forming a loose bubble cluster to help anchor them. The male guards the eggs and developing fry, driving away intruders; the female's role ends at egg deposition. This paternal cave-guarding strategy is typical of Parosphromenus.

Egg numbers are small, as befits the fish's size and the intimacy of the spawning cavity. Incubation and fry development proceed in the soft, acidic water of the spawning tank; maintaining conditions close to the natural habitat parameters — pH in the low 5s to mid-5s, very low conductivity, warm temperature — is important for successful hatching and early fry survival. The tiny fry initially consume infusoria-scale foods, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worms as they grow. Parental care by the male continues for a short period post-hatching before the fry become free-swimming and begin to disperse.

Captive breeding of P. sumatranus is considered achievable by experienced keepers but is infrequently documented in the hobby relative to more commonly kept Parosphromenus species. The EAZA Best Practice Guidelines for Parosphromenus include this species among those for which captive breeding programmes are recommended given its declining wild status.

In the aquarium

Parosphromenus sumatranus is a species for the specialist. Its near-absolute requirement for extremely soft, acidic blackwater — pH in the low 4s to mid-5s, conductivity below 50 µS/cm — places it well outside the reach of standard tap water in most parts of the world; successful keeping requires either naturally suitable source water or water prepared by reverse osmosis and acidified with botanicals or commercial peat extract. Dissolved minerals in even modest concentrations appear to impair health and suppress breeding.

The tank should be small, well-shaded or with low light, and furnished with leaf litter, coconut shell caves or other small covered cavities, and dense planting or tangles of driftwood roots to provide the hiding places this very shy species requires. Filtration must be gentle — a small sponge filter provides biological filtration without generating the current that would stress a fish adapted to still peat swamps. Surface access is essential because the labyrinth organ requires the fish to gulp air regularly. Tankmates, if kept at all, should be similarly small, peaceful, and equally demanding of soft acidic water; many keepers maintain P. sumatranus in a species-only setup to eliminate competition and permit close observation of display and spawning behaviour. Regular small live food feedings and stable, extreme-chemistry water are the two pillars of long-term success.

Conservation

Parosphromenus sumatranus is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List under criterion B1ab(iii), assessed 14 January 2019. The listing reflects its restricted endemic range — four river systems in the Jambi district of Sumatra — combined with documented decline in the quality and extent of its peat-swamp forest habitat. The EAZA Best Practice Guidelines for Parosphromenus note a trajectory toward Endangered if current habitat loss trends continue, proposing that EN more accurately reflects the actual extinction risk the species faces in the near term.

Lowland peat-swamp forest in Sumatra has been subject to intensive drainage, agricultural conversion (particularly for oil-palm and acacia plantations), and fire — losses that are among the fastest of any forest type globally. Because P. sumatranus is intolerant of dissolved minerals and requires the specific blackwater chemistry produced by intact peat accumulations, habitat degradation translates almost directly into population loss: altered drainage chemistry may render a swamp uninhabitable even before physical destruction is complete.

The species has appeared in the aquarium trade, sometimes mislabelled, and the Parosphromenus Project — a conservation-focused hobbyist network — documents captive populations and encourages breeding among specialist keepers. Establishing stable captive populations is considered an important conservation action for this and related Parosphromenus species whose wild habitats are under active threat.
