Taxonomy & naming
Parosphromenus tweediei was described by Maurice Kottelat and Peter K.L. Ng in 2005, in a revision of the genus Parosphromenus published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology (Supplement No. 13, pages 101–113). The type locality is the state of Johor in peninsular Malaysia. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Parosphromenus tweediei Kottelat & Ng, 2005.
The genus Parosphromenus belongs to the family Osphronemidae and comprises the licorice gouramis — a cluster of small, short-lived, blackwater specialists endemic to the peat swamp and heath-forest streams of the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Within the genus, P. tweediei is one of the round-tailed species (as opposed to lanceolate- or lyretail-finned forms) and has been compared by workers in the Parosphromenus Project to the bintan-harvey type in terms of body form and coloration. It is distinguishable from congeners primarily by fin formula and colour pattern details.
The specific epithet tweediei honours Michael W.F. Twedie, a naturalist associated with the Raffles Museum in Singapore who worked extensively on the natural history of the Malay Peninsula.
Morphology
Parosphromenus tweediei is a very small fish, reaching approximately 1 in standard length (SL) according to FishBase, with the Parosphromenus Project recording a maximum of around 1.5 in total length (TL). Like other licorice gouramis it has an elongate, slightly compressed body, a small upturned mouth suited for surface feeding, and the rounded caudal fin that places it among the round-tailed members of the genus.
The dorsal fin formula is X–XII hard rays followed by 6–7 soft rays (total 17–19); the anal fin runs X–XII hard rays and 7–8 soft rays (total 17–20). Sexual dichromatism is strong. Males in breeding condition display deep red unpaired fins (dorsal, caudal, anal) framed by broad black marginal bands and finished with white outer edges — a tricolour border that is visible at distance in even dimly lit blackwater. The ventral fins are blue and bear elongated dark filaments. Outside of display, males are considerably less vivid. Females are essentially transparent with only a faint brownish wash to the unpaired fins, providing camouflage in leaf litter and tannic water.
Habitat
In the wild, Parosphromenus tweediei is a stenotypic peat swamp inhabitant — meaning it is tightly associated with this habitat and has limited capacity to persist outside it. Peat swamp forest streams and pools in Johor, West Malaysia, are its native environment: heavily shaded by dense canopy, the water stained nearly opaque amber-black by dissolved humic and fulvic acids leaching from the waterlogged peat. Conductivity is extremely low (around 72 µS or less), pH ranges from approximately 3 to 4, and temperatures are warm but not hot, often around 72–77 °F.
This combination — near-distilled acidity, negligible mineral content, very low oxygen — is hostile to most fish but suits the licorice gouramis, which breathe atmospheric air via their labyrinth organ (the suprabranchial accessory breathing organ shared by all Osphronemidae). Access to the water surface is as important as the chemistry below it. Submerged leaf litter, root tangles, and low-light conditions are structural features the species relies on for cover and for spawning sites.
The species now survives only in fragments of heavily modified peat swamp. Extensive drainage and conversion of peat swamp to oil palm plantation and other agricultural uses across Johor and the wider Malay Peninsula have reduced and isolated suitable habitat drastically. The Parosphromenus Project notes that the former northern extent of its range has contracted.
Feeding
Parosphromenus tweediei is a micropredator in nature, feeding on tiny aquatic invertebrates — small crustaceans, insect larvae, and similar zooplankton that live among leaf litter and in the water column of blackwater pools. Its small mouth limits prey size accordingly.
In the aquarium it accepts appropriately sized live and frozen foods: Artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii, small Daphnia, and mosquito larvae are the standard recommendations. Dry foods are rarely taken readily; most keepers rely primarily on live or frozen invertebrate foods to maintain condition. Because the fish is small and its feeding strike modest, competition at the feeding spot from faster or larger tankmates quickly leads to malnourishment — a reason it is best kept in a dedicated or species-only setup.
Mating
Parosphromenus tweediei is a cave spawner. Males establish small territories around a suitable cavity — a crevice, a leaf rolled into a tube, a coconut shell half, or a ceramic cave — and defend these sites against rival males. Courtship involves intensive nuptial displays in which the male presents his full fin coloration to the female: the red, black, and white fin pattern reaches its maximum intensity and serves as a signal of male quality.
The male invites a receptive female into the spawning site with repeated visits and displays. Once she enters and accepts, spawning takes place inside the cave or crevice, often against the ceiling or inner surface. Eggs are laid in small numbers in close contact with the substrate rather than as a free-floating cluster. After spawning, the male guards the eggs and the entrance to the spawning site, driving away intruders.
Breeding
Breeding Parosphromenus tweediei in captivity requires faithful recreation of the species' blackwater chemistry. Water should be very soft (near zero hardness), with pH in the range of 3–4 and temperature around 72–77 °F; most breeders use RO water with a small addition of peat extract or dried Indian almond leaves to achieve the necessary acidity and humic content. Conductivity should be very low. Filtration must be extremely gentle — a small sponge filter or still water is preferred, as the species is not adapted to current.
Spawning caves of appropriate scale — small enough to exclude the female if the male requires — are essential. Eggs are deposited in small numbers on the inner surface of the cave, and the male tends them through hatching. Clutch sizes are modest, consistent with the small body size. The male should be left undisturbed during brooding; interference causes desertion. Fry emerge after a few days and are tiny; first foods are infusoria or rotifers before graduation to Artemia nauplii. The labyrinth organ develops over the first weeks of life, and young fish must have access to humid air above the water surface during this period.
In the aquarium
Parosphromenus tweediei is a specialist fish suited to keepers who are prepared to commit to its demanding water chemistry and feeding requirements. It is not a community fish. A dedicated tank of modest volume — 10–15 US gal is sufficient for a small group or pair — fitted with a tight-fitting lid to maintain humid air above the surface, very gentle filtration, soft acidic water, subdued lighting, and dense cover of floating plants and leaf litter provides the conditions in which the species thrives and displays.
The extreme colouration of displaying males is the reward for meeting these requirements, and it is not visible under typical community-tank conditions where water chemistry is wrong and competition prevents relaxed behaviour. Males may be aggressive toward one another in confined space; a group with multiple females and a larger footprint manages this better than a single pair in a small tank. The species is short-lived — a year to perhaps two years in the wild — and even under good captive conditions should not be expected to match the longevity of a more robust gourami.
Captive breeding and propagation of Parosphromenus tweediei through hobbyist networks is actively encouraged by the Parosphromenus Project, which coordinates keeper efforts to maintain genetically diverse captive populations as a hedge against wild population losses. Sourcing tank-bred stock from reputable keepers is strongly preferred to wild-caught imports.
Conservation
Parosphromenus tweediei is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 14 January 2019) under criteria B1ab(iii,iv,v)+2ab(iii,iv,v) — criteria that reflect a restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy combined with observed and continuing decline in habitat quality, number of locations, and number of mature individuals. The proximate cause is the near-total destruction of peat swamp forest in Johor and the broader Malay Peninsula through drainage and conversion to oil palm, acacia plantation, and other land uses.
Peat swamp forest is among the most threatened ecosystems in Southeast Asia. For a fish as narrowly specialised as P. tweediei — unable to persist in the altered, nutrient-enriched, higher-pH water that replaces peat swamp after drainage — habitat loss is existential rather than merely a pressure to adapt to. The Parosphromenus Project tracks wild populations and maintains captive-studbook networks, recognising that for several Parosphromenus species the captive population held by dedicated hobbyists may outlast any remnant wild stock if habitat loss continues at its current rate.
