Taxonomy & naming
Anablepsoides amphoreus was described by Jean-Henri Huber in 1979, with the type locality given as Tafelberg in central Suriname, a sandstone tepui massif rising to around 1,0 ft. Huber placed the species in the genus Rivulus, and for most of its taxonomic history it was known as Rivulus amphoreus. A subsequent reclassification erected the synonym Oditichthys amphoreus, though that name has not been widely adopted. The current valid combination, Anablepsoides amphoreus (Huber, 1979), reflects the generic revision that redistributed the former Rivulus assemblage among several resurrected and newly erected genera on the basis of molecular phylogenetics; the authority appears in parentheses because the species was originally assigned to a different genus.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the species in the family Rivulidae, subfamily Rivulinae, distributed across Atlantic river basins in Suriname. The genus Anablepsoides takes its name from a superficial resemblance of the eye arrangement in some members to the four-eyed fish Anableps, though the resemblance is anatomical rather than functional. The specific epithet amphoreus derives from the Greek amphora — a two-handled ceramic vessel with a narrow neck — and refers to the distinctive ear-like shape of the embedded neuromasts on the lateral surface of the head, a feature that was unusual within the former Rivulus sensu lato at the time of description.
Morphology
Anablepsoides amphoreus is a slender, moderately compressed rivuline reaching a maximum total length of 2.5 in (FishBase), placing it in the smaller half of the genus. The body plan is typical of the non-annual South American rivulines: an elongate, laterally compressed profile with the dorsal fin set well back over the anal fin, a rounded caudal fin, and a slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface or near-surface feeding. The lateral line is incomplete, as in other rivulids, and consists of a series of embedded neuromasts — the amphora-shaped neuromast clusters that inspired the species name are visible on close examination of the head.
Meristic counts recorded from type material include 10 dorsal-fin rays, 17 anal-fin rays, and 48 lateral scales (LL 48). Sexual dimorphism is marked, as is the rule in the genus: males develop the metallic, iridescent colouration characteristic of the group, typically showing blue-green or teal flanks with red or orange spotting; females are drabber, brownish, and often carry the distinctive ocellus on the dorsal base of the caudal fin — the rivuline 'caudal spot' — that females of many Anablepsoides species retain as an evolutionary relic of a mimicry or mate-choice signal.
Habitat
The type locality at Tafelberg is a highland sandstone plateau, and collection records from the American Killifish Association document additional localities across central and northern Suriname — including the Lely Gebergte hills and the Paramaribo area — indicating the species occupies a range of elevations and drainage contexts within the country. The Tafelberg habitat in particular is characterised by fast-running, clear, well-oxygenated mountain streams, in marked contrast to the slow, dark, acidic pools where many lowland South American rivulines are found.
FishBase records the species as benthopelagic and freshwater, with a pH range of 6.5–8.0, reflecting the relatively neutral to mildly alkaline conditions typical of streams draining sandstone and laterite substrates rather than the bleached white-sand Amazonian blackwater systems. Water temperatures at highland stream habitats in Suriname tend to be cool by tropical standards, and hobbyist accounts from It Rains Fishes describe natural temperatures around 72 °F — notably cooler than the conditions tolerated by lowland South American rivulines. This thermal preference is an important parameter for successful maintenance in captivity.
Feeding
Like other non-annual rivulines of its size, Anablepsoides amphoreus is a generalised carnivore that takes small invertebrates at or near the water surface and in the water column. In fast-flowing highland streams the natural diet is likely dominated by small aquatic and terrestrial insects, including drifting invertebrates carried by the current, as well as microcrustaceans and other zooplankton-sized prey. The forward-angled, slightly upturned mouth is adapted for targeting prey at or just below the water surface.
In captivity the species accepts a wide range of small live and frozen foods: Drosophila, small waxworms, cyclops, Daphnia, and frozen bloodworm are all suitable. The non-annual rivulines tend to be active, alert feeders that quickly learn to recognise their keeper. As with other killifish of similar size, overfeeding should be avoided, since the species is prone to obesity if given unlimited access to rich live foods.
Mating
Anablepsoides amphoreus is a non-annual killifish — it inhabits permanent water bodies and does not produce diapausing eggs capable of surviving substrate desiccation. Its reproductive mode is that of a plant or mop spawner: pairs hang adhesive eggs individually on fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, rootlets, Java moss, or artificial floating spawning mops over a period of days or weeks, with no mass spawning event and no involvement of buried substrate. This mode differs fundamentally from the peat-spawning annuals with which killifish are sometimes stereotyped.
Males court females with lateral displays, fanning the dorsal and caudal fins to expose their full colouration. Spawning pairs align side by side and deposit individual adhesive eggs on vegetation or mop fibres near the surface or at mid-water. Accounts from It Rains Fishes describe an output of roughly 5–15 eggs per day across extended spawning periods, making the total daily production low but sustained. The eggs are described as amber-coloured and approximately 0.5 in in diameter — relatively large for a fish of this size, which is consistent with the direct-development strategy of non-annual killifish.
Breeding
Eggs of Anablepsoides amphoreus incubate in water, with no requirement for a dry or damp-peat storage phase. At the cool temperatures preferred by the species (around 72 °F), incubation takes approximately 14 days before hatching, slightly longer than the typical 10–12 days reported for warmer-water rivulines. Fry are free-swimming immediately on hatching and are large enough to take freshly hatched Artemia nauplii as a first food, bypassing the need for infusoria or paramecia culture that some smaller rivuline fry require. Growth to sexual maturity is moderate in pace, and the species is comparatively long-lived for a killifish — up to three years in well-maintained captivity.
In practice, the easiest way to maintain a breeding colony is to float several dark-coloured spawning mops in the tank and collect them every few days, removing the eggs to a small hatching container with water matched to the parent tank. Because the adults are not aggressive toward eggs in the wild — eggs are hidden in vegetation — predation in captivity is lower than in some other killifish, though separating eggs remains good practice. The three-year lifespan means that well-cared-for individuals can be productive breeders for an extended period.
In the aquarium
Anablepsoides amphoreus is suited to a small, species-only or genus-specific setup. A tank of 10–15 US gal with a tight-fitting lid — essential for any killifish, which are accomplished jumpers — can house a pair or a small group of one male and two females comfortably. The cool-water preference (optimum around 68–75 °F) makes the species suitable for rooms that run cool by tropical-fish standards; no heater may be needed in temperate climates during the warmer months, though stability is more important than an exact target.
Water chemistry should be in the neutral-to-slightly-acidic range, consistent with the pH 6.5–8.0 recorded in the wild. Moderate hardness is acceptable; very soft blackwater conditions are not recommended for this species. Filtration should provide gentle flow — heavy turbulence is unnecessary — but oxygenation matters given the species' origin in well-aerated mountain streams. Dense planting with fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, hornwort, or Ceratophyllum, with floating plants to diffuse surface light and provide egg-laying sites, reproduces the structure of its natural habitat and reduces male aggression.
The species is infrequently encountered in the hobby but is maintained by specialist killifish societies, particularly in Europe and North America. The American Killifish Association lists it among species available through member fish distributions. Its modest size, interesting behaviour, and hardiness relative to many annual killies make it a good introduction to non-annual South American rivulines for the killifish enthusiast.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessors Taphorn and Rodríguez-Olarte evaluated Anablepsoides amphoreus in 2021 and assigned it Least Concern status, reflecting a distribution across multiple river drainages in Suriname and no evidence of population decline significant enough to approach threshold criteria. The assessment was adopted in version 2025-2 of the Red List. Suriname retains a relatively large area of intact interior rainforest, and the highland sandstone habitats where this species occurs are among the least disturbed landscapes in the country — the Tafelberg type locality lies within the Central Suriname Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering 1.6 million hectares of primary forest.
Despite the reassuring Least Concern listing, the species' reliance on cool, fast-flowing highland streams makes it potentially sensitive to deforestation-driven siltation and thermal warming that could degrade stream quality in its range. Suriname's interior faces increasing pressure from gold mining activity, particularly artisanal alluvial mining, which causes severe mercury contamination and siltation of forest streams. Monitoring of populations in highland drainages outside the protected area network would be prudent as mining activity expands. The species' restricted national range — known only from Suriname — means that any significant event affecting that country's highland stream systems would affect the entire known population.
