The authority is presented in parentheses because Garman originally placed the species in a genus other than Anablepsoides; the current combination reflects a subsequent reclassification. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) recognises Anablepsoides atratus (Garman, 1895) as the valid name.

The genus Anablepsoides was resurrected or elevated as part of the broader realignment of the family Rivulidae following molecular phylogenetic work in the early twenty-first century. The genus name alludes to superficial similarities with the four-eyed fish Anableps, though Anablepsoides lacks the divided eye structure of that genus. Christopher Scharpf's etyfish.org etymology database records that the specific epithet atratus is Latin for 'dressed in black', from ater (black) — a reference to the species' dark body coloration.

Hobbyist literature, including records held by the American Killifish Association, long treated this fish under the older combination Rivulus atratus, reflecting an era when the broad genus Rivulus was used to accommodate a wide range of South American rivulines. The American ichthyologist J. S. Huber's 2012 classification recognised Anablepsoides and allied genera as distinct from Rivulus sensu stricto, an arrangement supported by subsequent phylogenetic analyses and adopted in the current Catalog of Fishes treatment. The species thus sits within the non-annual clade of Neotropical rivulines — a group in which itrainsfishes.net and other authorities note that the capacity for annualism evolved from ancestors that were, like Anablepsoides atratus, permanent-water dwellers.

Morphology

Anablepsoides atratus is a slender, elongate killifish reaching a recorded maximum of 1.5 in total length (FishBase). This places it among the smaller members of the genus. The body plan is typical of non-annual rivulines: cylindrical rather than laterally compressed, with the dorsal fin set well back toward the caudal peduncle — a body form suited to inhabiting the surface layer or shallow margins of permanent water bodies rather than the open water column.

The species' epithet 'dressed in black' signals that dark pigmentation is a defining character. Adult males typically display deeper, more intense colouration than females, a pattern common across the genus; females are generally paler and plainer-bodied. A captive breeding study published on ResearchGate examined a related Anablepsoides sp. from the Pastaza River basin in Ecuador under permanent-water conditions, consistent with the non-annual ecology shared across the genus. Unlike annual killifish, which are tied to seasonal pools that dry completely and whose eggs must survive months of desiccation buried in the substrate, Anablepsoides atratus inhabits streams, permanent forest pools, and associated marginal vegetation where standing water persists year-round.

Feeding

Like other small rivulines, Anablepsoides atratus is an opportunistic micro-predator. Breeding

Breeding Anablepsoides atratus follows the standard non-annual rivuline method. At 1.5 in maximum length it is suited to modest tank sizes — a dedicated breeding pair or small group can be maintained in 5.5–10 US gal, though a somewhat larger tank provides more stable water conditions. The fish are best kept as a species tank or with other small, peaceful killies rather than in a general community, where they may be outcompeted at feeding time and are liable to jump through any gap in the cover.

A tight-fitting lid is essential: killifish are renowned jumpers, and Anablepsoides species are no exception. The tank need not be elaborate — a dark substrate, some surface cover of floating plants or a mop, gentle filtration (a sponge filter is ideal), and subdued lighting create conditions in which the fish display their best colouration and behave naturally. Water changes of approximately 20–30 % weekly maintain the water quality that permanent-water killies require; the absence of the extreme soft-water tolerance that characterises many black-water annuals means that moderately soft to moderately hard, near-neutral water is appropriate.

Availability in the hobby is patchy. Anablepsoides atratus appears in the American Killifish Association's species index and has been maintained by specialist killifish hobbyists, but it is not a commonly traded fish in the mainstream aquarium market. Enthusiasts typically obtain it through killifish society egg or fish exchanges rather than pet retailers. Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessment of Anablepsoides atratus, carried out by Gabriel Brejão and published in 2024 (Version 2025-2 of the Red List), assigns the species a status of Least Concern. This assessment reflects the species' broad distribution across the Amazon basin in Brazil, Peru, and Colombia and the absence of evidence pointing to rapid or severe population decline.
