The Caura rivuline is a small, non-annual killifish discovered in the forested headwaters of Venezuela's Rio Caura, a southern tributary of the Orinoco draining the Guiana Highlands of Bolívar State. Described by Albert Radda in 2004 from material collected near the Raudal Pará waterfall, it inhabits permanent forest streams and pools where the water is softly acidic. A classic mop spawner, it deposits a handful of adhesive eggs each day onto aquatic vegetation, roots, or floating spawning substrate — a slow, sustained strategy entirely different from the burst-and-bury life cycle of the annual rivulines for which South American killifish are perhaps best known. The IUCN has assessed it as Data Deficient, reflecting how little scientific attention has reached the remote upper Caura basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Anablepsoides caurae was described by the Austrian killifish specialist Albert C. Radda in 2004 from specimens collected by Eduard Pürzl, J. Gamperl, K. Wepper, and N. Flauger at the type locality in Bolívar State, Venezuela. The original publication placed the fish in the genus Rivulus, under which it circulated in the hobbyist literature for some years as Rivulus caurae. Subsequent revisions of New World rivuline phylogeny elevated Anablepsoides as the genus encompassing the largely South American rivulines previously grouped under Rivulus sensu lato; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the valid combination as Anablepsoides caurae (Radda, 2004), with the authority in parentheses reflecting the generic transfer.

The species belongs to the family Rivulidae, order Cyprinodontiformes, the broad assemblage of egg-laying toothcarps that spans six continents and includes annual killifish, pupfish, and Kryptolebias, the self-fertilising mangrove killifish. Within Rivulidae, Anablepsoides is one of the larger New World rivuline genera, comprising several dozen species spread across northern and central South America. The WoRMS/Marine Species Traits database confirms the family and generic placement under the current classification.

Morphology

Like most members of the genus, the Caura rivuline is a slender, elongate fish with a dorsoventrally flattened head — a shape suited to life among surface roots and leaf litter near the water's edge. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in; hobbyist sources working from living specimens describe fish reaching approximately 2 in in total length, suggesting the FishBase figure reflects preserved museum material that may have shrunk. The body is covered in relatively large, smooth cycloid scales and the mouth is superior, pointing upward — a common adaptation in surface-oriented killifish that pick small prey from the film.

Colouration in males is characteristically vivid: a turquoise-blue or greenish body base with scattered red or orange spotting on the flanks and a banded or spotted caudal fin. Females are substantially plainer, showing a buff to brownish ground colour with reduced patterning — the sexual dichromatism is pronounced enough to make sexing straightforward at a glance. Exact colouration varies with collection locality, age, and condition.

Habitat

The type locality is the Rio Caura approximately 1 mi upstream from the village of El Playon, near the Raudal Pará waterfall in Bolívar State, Venezuela. The Rio Caura is a major right-bank tributary of the Orinoco, rising in the tepui-country of the Guiana Highlands and flowing north across the Llanos before joining the Orinoco near Ciudad Bolívar. Its upper reaches run through intact, seasonally flooded tropical forest and support some of the best-preserved riparian habitat on the continent.

The fish inhabits the permanent, slow-moving margins of forest streams and small pools within this system, where overhanging vegetation, submerged roots, and leaf litter create the sheltered microhabitats that small rivulines favour. Collection data indicate water conditions of approximately pH 6.5 and around 77 °F — mildly acidic and warm, consistent with lowland forest stream chemistry influenced by organic leachates but not as extremely dark or soft as the blackwater of the Rio Negro system. Hardness data are not available from published sources, but acidic forest stream conditions across this part of Venezuela tend toward low-moderate hardness.

Feeding

In the wild the Caura rivuline is a generalised micropredator, feeding on small invertebrates — insects, crustaceans, worms — taken from the water surface, mid-water, and the substrate margin. Its superior mouth and flattened head profile suggest a bias toward surface feeding on fallen invertebrates, a strategy common among forest-stream rivulines that exploit the rain of arthropods from overhanging riparian vegetation.

In the aquarium it accepts live Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, small Tubifex, microworms, and similar live or frozen micro-foods readily. Hobbyist experience recorded via the It Rains Fishes database indicates that high-quality live food — particularly fresh Artemia nauplii — is important for triggering and sustaining peak spawning condition. Dry foods can supplement the diet once the fish is established, but meatier items form the core of the productive captive diet.

Mating

Anablepsoides caurae is a non-annual killifish with a mop-spawning reproductive strategy, entirely distinct from the peat-burying annual species with which South American killifish are popularly associated. The pair courts in open water near the surface or among fine vegetation, where the male displays his lateral patterning to the female. Spawning is not a single mass event but a sustained, incremental process: a conditioned pair deposits a small number of adhesive eggs — typically 5 to 15 per day under good conditions with rich live-food feeding — over an extended period of days or weeks.

The eggs are deposited on fine-leaved aquatic plants, Java moss, spawning mops, or peat moss substrate placed near the surface. They adhere on contact and are left unguarded. Males may court and spawn with more than one female sequentially, a pattern common across the genus. Unlike annual killifish, the adults live in permanent water year-round and continue spawning through their lifespan without requiring a resting or aestivation phase.

Breeding

Eggs are incubated in water at ambient temperature with no diapause — a defining characteristic of non-annual rivulines. At around 77 °F hatching occurs within roughly two to three weeks; the exact duration varies with temperature, oxygen levels, and egg health. Fry are comparatively large at hatching relative to annual species and can usually take Artemia nauplii as a first food. Because the adults spawn continuously and the fry remain accessible in the same tank, breeders commonly use a dedicated spawning mop or plant cluster that can be checked and removed every few days, or separate the adults and rear eggs in a shallow water column to reduce predation risk.

Conditioning the adults on varied live foods — particularly fresh Artemia nauplii — substantially increases daily egg output. Water quality and stability matter more to consistent productivity than extreme chemistry; soft to moderately soft, mildly acidic water in the pH 6.0–7.0 range at 73–79 °F reproduces the conditions of the type locality reasonably well. The species is modestly productive rather than a prolific breeder, so maintaining colony numbers requires consistent attention to egg collection and fry rearing.

In the aquarium

The Caura rivuline is a manageable killifish for the intermediate hobbyist with an interest in South American rivulines. Its small size — under 2 in total length — means it can be housed comfortably in an aquarium of 10–15 US gal for a pair or trio. A tight-fitting lid is essential; like all killifish it is an accomplished jumper and will exit through even a small gap. The tank benefits from floating plants, submerged fine-leaved vegetation such as Java moss, and dim or diffused lighting that replicates the shaded forest-stream environment. Dark substrate enhances colouration in males.

The fish is best maintained as a species tank or with very small, peaceful tankmates of comparable size; males of the same or closely related species may spar. Water should be maintained at pH 6.0–7.0 and temperature 72–79 °F, with regular partial water changes to sustain quality. The American Killifish Association (AKA) recognises the species and can direct hobbyists toward active breeders; it circulates under its former name Rivulus caurae in older hobbyist records.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List records Anablepsoides caurae as Data Deficient (DD), a status that reflects the absence of sufficient survey data to evaluate population size, range, or trend rather than confirmed security. The type locality in the upper Rio Caura is within a region that has historically seen relatively low human population density and land-use pressure compared with other Venezuelan watersheds, but the Guiana Highlands and upper Orinoco tributaries are not immune to the deforestation, artisanal and large-scale mining, and associated stream degradation that have affected other Venezuelan freshwater fish habitats.

The Rio Caura supports a high diversity of endemic freshwater species, and loss or degradation of its forested riparian corridor would threaten the microhabitats — shallow, shaded, permanent forest-edge streams and pools — on which Anablepsoides caurae and its congeners depend. As a small, single-drainage endemic known from a restricted type locality, the species is inherently exposed to any basin-level disturbance. Comprehensive surveys of the upper Caura ichthyofauna are needed before a more informative IUCN category can be assigned.
