The Bahia rivulus is a small, non-annual killifish native to the coastal streams and forest pools of northeastern Brazil, centred on the Atlantic Forest of Bahia state near Salvador. Unlike the seasonal killifish of inland savannas and annual pools, Anablepsoides bahianus inhabits permanent or near-permanent watercourses and reproduces continuously — laying small batches of adhesive eggs on vegetation and spawning mops rather than burying eggs in substrate to wait out a dry season. At 2 in total length it is a compact and manageable species that the American Killifish Association has noted under its older name Rivulus bahianus; it is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List as of 2022, though its restricted Atlantic Forest range ties its fate closely to the continued health of one of the world's most threatened tropical forest biomes.

Taxonomy & naming

Anablepsoides bahianus was described by J.-H. Huber in 1990. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Anablepsoides bahianus (Huber, 1990); the parentheses around the authority indicate the species has been moved from the genus in which it was originally placed. The species was long treated under the genus Rivulus, and the American Killifish Association still lists it under that historical name. Wilson J.E.M. Costa's 2008 redescription confirmed its placement within the South American rivuline assemblage now accommodated in Anablepsoides, a genus erected to receive a large portion of the former Rivulus sensu lato. The genus Anablepsoides takes its name from the four-eyed fish genus Anableps, reflecting superficial similarities in the genus-group assemblage.

The type locality is near Itapoã, Salvador, Bahia, Brazil — a coastal Atlantic Forest site in the state that gives the species its specific epithet. The species belongs to the South American rivuline group, the most species-rich assemblage of non-annual killies in the Neotropics, characterised by plant-spawning reproduction and permanent or near-permanent habitat associations. The name Atlantirivulus bahianus has also been used for this fish; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats it as a synonym of Anablepsoides bahianus.

Morphology

Anablepsoides bahianus is a slender, cylindrical killifish reaching a maximum of 2 in total length (FishBase). The body plan is typical for the rivuline group: elongated and torpedo-shaped, adapted for life in slow or shallow water with good manoeuvrability among plant stems and surface debris. The mouth is upturned, orienting the fish toward surface insects and invertebrates. Colour details from available hobbyist accounts describe males as more vividly marked than females, which is characteristic of the genus.

Sexual dimorphism is present and typical of the genus: males are generally more brightly coloured than females, and females become visibly rounder when carrying eggs. The species is not among the largest rivulines, and its modest size makes it manageable for species tank setups without requiring large aquarium volumes.

Habitat

In the wild, Anablepsoides bahianus occupies shallow streams and pools within forest, based on FishBase habitat records (Ref. 89008). The type locality near Itapoã, Salvador places the species within the Atlantic Forest coastal zone of Bahia state in northeastern Brazil — a biome characterised by warm, humid forest that historically extended along the entire Brazilian eastern seaboard. The species' distribution is concentrated in this northeastern Atlantic Forest region around Salvador and Alagoinhas.

The watercourses the species inhabits in this zone are typically shallow, shaded by forest canopy, and subject to warm temperatures year-round. Unlike the seasonal pools and savanna wetlands occupied by annual killifish from the Brazilian cerrado or the caatinga, these Atlantic Forest streams tend to persist through dry periods, though they may fluctuate in volume seasonally. This habitat permanence is the ecological basis for the species' non-annual reproductive strategy.

Feeding

Like other rivulines, Anablepsoides bahianus is a carnivore, feeding on small invertebrates, insects, and zooplankton in the wild. The upturned mouth and surface-oriented posture suggest a preference for prey at or near the water surface — small flying or falling insects, surface-film invertebrates, and aquatic larvae. FishBase assigns the species a trophic level of 3.2 ± 0.4, consistent with a diet centred on small invertebrates rather than fish or large prey.

In captivity the species accepts live and frozen invertebrate foods readily. Daphnia, mosquito larvae (bloodworm and white mosquito larvae), and brine shrimp nauplii are standard fare for hobbyist maintenance and conditioning for breeding. A varied diet with emphasis on live or frozen foods maintains colour and spawning condition; dry foods alone tend to produce poor results in rivulines.

Mating

Anablepsoides bahianus is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. Spawning is continuous and non-seasonal in captivity, reflecting the permanent water conditions of the native habitat. Pairs or trios — a single male with one or two females — engage in repeated spawning events throughout the year, producing small clutches of adhesive eggs rather than a single large seasonal deposit.

The spawning drive is stimulated by the presence of fine-leaved plants or artificial spawning mops, which the pair use as an egg-deposition substrate. Eggs are pressed singly into the mop fibres or plant material near the surface or at mid-water, where they adhere until collection. Hobbyist accounts from It Rains Fishes (Frans Vermeulen) describe a typical output of 5–15 eggs per day per pair or trio — a modest but sustained rate that accumulates to significant numbers over weeks of conditioning. Males may compete for access to females; where multiple males are kept together, cover and visual barriers help reduce conflict.

Breeding

Eggs are 0.5 in in diameter, amber-coloured, and adhesive, adhering firmly to mop fibres or plant material where they are deposited. Under standard aquarium conditions they hatch in approximately 14 days at warm temperatures. Hobbyist practice involves picking or cutting eggs from mops every few days and incubating them in small, shallow containers of aquarium water, often with a small amount of methylene blue to suppress fungus. It Rains Fishes notes that eggs can be stored for up to 14 days before being placed in water for hatching without loss of viability — a useful characteristic for hobbyists managing multiple spawning pairs.

Fry are free-swimming immediately upon hatching and are large enough to take freshly hatched Artemia nauplii from the first day — a significant practical advantage over species whose fry require infusoria for their first week. The sex ratio of fry can be influenced by pH at hatching: lower pH conditions during incubation are reported to favour females. Growth is steady; fish reach sexual maturity at 4–5 months. In good conditions the species lives up to 3 years in captivity, which is on the longer end for rivulines and consistent with its non-annual life-history strategy.

In the aquarium

Anablepsoides bahianus is described by It Rains Fishes as a species that is easy to breed but requires attentive husbandry. A species tank is recommended — a small aquarium of 10–15 US gal with dense planting or spawning mops, a dark substrate (peat moss is favoured), gentle filtration, and a tight-fitting cover. The tight cover is non-negotiable: like most rivulines, this species is an accomplished jumper and will exit through any gap left open.

FishBase notes it is difficult to maintain in aquarium (Ref. 27139) — which in the context of killifish typically refers to the need for specific water quality management and the sensitivity of the species relative to more forgiving community fish, rather than exceptional difficulty for the experienced killifish keeper. Water should be soft to moderately soft and slightly acidic to neutral, reflecting the Atlantic Forest stream conditions of the native range. Live and frozen invertebrate foods form the dietary staple; varied feeding improves colour and spawning frequency.

The species is kept primarily by specialist killifish hobbyists through killifish associations and at dedicated breeders. The American Killifish Association maintains a species account. Availability in the broader trade is limited; fish are typically obtained from fellow hobbyists or association fish rooms rather than commercial retailers.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Anablepsoides bahianus as Least Concern (LC) on 18 May 2022, reflecting that no immediate population-level collapse has been detected across its known range. FishBase records a resilience rating of high, with a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months — a consequence of the species' continuous, sustained reproduction and relatively short generation time.

Nonetheless, the species' restricted distribution within the Atlantic Forest of northeastern Brazil places it in one of the world's most heavily deforested biomes. The Atlantic Forest has lost over 85% of its original extent to agriculture, urbanisation, and cattle ranching over the past five centuries, with the northeastern portion around Bahia among the most fragmented regions. The type locality near Itapoã, Salvador lies within an increasingly urbanised coastal zone — the species was first collected in 1908 from Rio Catu at Alagoinhas, a site now barely 100 metres from Salvador's international airport, as vivid an illustration as any of how thoroughly the accessible part of its range has been built over. Habitat loss through stream channelisation, deforestation of riparian corridors, urban expansion, and water extraction from small coastal watercourses represents the primary long-term threat to the species. Pollution from agricultural run-off and domestic waste in peri-urban streams is also a pressure. The Least Concern assessment should not be read as meaning the species faces no threat, but rather that, at the time of assessment, it had not declined to the threshold level required for a threatened category.
