Aphanius mesopotamicus is a small, hard-water killifish endemic to the lower Mesopotamian marshes of southern Iraq and southwestern Iran — the vast reed-bed wetland system formed by the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Described by Brian W. Coad in 2009, it is one of the more recently formalised members of a genus adapted to the arid old-world interior: saline springs, brackish lagoons, and thermally variable marsh channels that most freshwater fishes cannot tolerate. Males display silvery flank barring and clear-margined fins; females carry irregular blotches. The species' fate is tied directly to the fate of the Mesopotamian marshes, a Ramsar-listed World Heritage wetland that was catastrophically drained in the 1990s and has been partially restored since 2003.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphanius mesopotamicus was formally described by the Canadian ichthyologist Brian W. Coad in 2009, published in ZooKeys 31: 149–163 (DOI 10.3897/zookeys.31.131). The type locality is the lower Mesopotamian marshes — the great floodplain wetland of southern Iraq and adjacent Iran formed by the Tigris and Euphrates. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Aphanius mesopotamicus Coad, 2009.

The genus Aphanius is placed in the family Aphaniidae (formerly treated within Cyprinodontidae), a group of small, hard-water toothcarps distributed across the Mediterranean rim, North Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, Anatolia, and east through Iran and Pakistan to Central Asia. The genus is the Old World counterpart of the North American pupfishes (Cyprinodon) in its ecological niche: many species are extremophiles adapted to saline springs, alkaline desert pools, and coastal lagoons. The 2009 description brought the total number of Aphanius species to over twenty and reflected the ongoing fine-grained taxonomic resolution of the group made possible by molecular and morphological analysis of museum collections.

No subspecies or geographically distinct populations have been formally described for A. mesopotamicus. Because no recent field collections from the species' type locality have been documented, the population structure of any surviving individuals remains unknown.

Morphology

Aphanius mesopotamicus is a small, laterally compressed killifish in the typical Aphanius body plan: a short, deep-bodied profile, a rounded or slightly truncate caudal fin, and a terminal, upturned mouth adapted for surface and near-surface feeding. Exact maximum size has not been documented in the formal description, but members of the genus typically reach 1.5–2.5 in total length, with males somewhat smaller than females.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as in most Aphanius. Males bear 10–15 clearly defined vertical bars or blotch-bars on the flanks, bright silvery or bluish-silver in reflected light, set against a darker base body colour. The unpaired fins — dorsal, caudal, and anal — carry distinct clear or pale margins that give a bordered, clean appearance. Females show the typical Aphanius female pattern: irregular blotches or spots distributed across the flank rather than regular bars, with less vivid colouration overall and a more robust, deeper belly when gravid.

The original description notes the absence of caudal bars in males — a character that helps distinguish A. mesopotamicus from some congeners within the Tigris-Euphrates basin. The scales are cycloid and moderately large, the lateral line is reduced to a series of pored scales, and the small, slightly upward-tilting mouth reflects the surface-skimming feeding habit shared across the genus.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the lower Mesopotamian marshes: the mosaic of permanent lakes, seasonal inundation flats, reed channels, and brackish lagoons occupying the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates in southern Iraq and extending into the Shatt al-Arab and adjacent areas of southwestern Iran. This is an arid-zone wetland subject to extreme seasonal temperature swings, high summer evaporation that concentrates salinity, and significant turbidity from wind-driven resuspension of sediment.

Like other Aphanius, the species is adapted to hard, often brackish water. Congener data from thermal spring populations of related species document temperature ranges spanning 73–109 °F and salinities up to 60 ppt, illustrating the extremophile capacity of the genus. The Mesopotamian marsh environment, while less saline than a salt spring, fluctuates substantially in temperature, conductivity, and dissolved oxygen — particularly in shallow open-water areas and in channels isolated during the dry season. The fish's tolerance of these conditions is the basis of its persistence in a landscape inhospitable to most other small-bodied fishes.

Permanent, year-round water characterises the type locality, and this permanent-water ecology is the biological basis for the species' non-annual reproductive strategy — unlike arid-zone annual killifish that track ephemeral pools, A. mesopotamicus inhabits water that, under undisturbed conditions, persists across seasons.

Feeding

Aphanius mesopotamicus, like its congeners, is a generalised micro-predator and surface-skimmer. The Aphanius feeding guild in similar habitats — saline springs and brackish coastal wetlands across the Middle East — typically preys on invertebrates at and near the water surface: midges, mosquito larvae, small crustaceans, aquatic insect nymphs, algae, and detrital organic matter. The upturned mouth facilitates surface-film gleaning, which accounts for the genus's reputation as a natural mosquito-control agent in its native range.

No gut-content studies specific to A. mesopotamicus appear in the available literature, reflecting the paucity of field data since the species' description. Husbandry accounts for related Aphanius indicate that in captivity the fish accepts live and frozen Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, bloodworm, and small prepared foods without difficulty, and that algal grazing supplements the animal component of the diet. These observations are consistent with the broad micro-predator/omnivore feeding mode documented across the genus.

Mating

Aphanius mesopotamicus is a non-annual killifish and a plant spawner — the pair spawn continuously over days or weeks rather than in a single seasonal burst, depositing adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged roots, or floating spawning mops. This reproductive mode is directly tied to the permanence of the Mesopotamian marsh habitat: unlike annual killies that time a single explosive spawning event to the flood–drought cycle of ephemeral pools, A. mesopotamicus lives in water that persists year-round and can sustain protracted, repeated spawning.

Males court females with display posturing and lateral presentation, showing off the barred flanks and clear-margined fins. Pairing is typically between one male and one female for each spawning act, though males may court multiple females. Spawning occurs near the surface or in vegetation, with the female depositing a small number of adhesive eggs per encounter — typically a few eggs per day across an extended season rather than hundreds in a single clutch.

Sexual competition among males is present: in the wild, dominant males defend small territories around stands of emergent or submerged vegetation. Females choose among displaying males, and the striking sexual dichromatism of the genus is understood as a product of this female mate choice acting on male colour patterns.

Breeding

Eggs of Aphanius mesopotamicus are adhesive and are deposited singly or in small groups on plant material or spawning mop fibres, where they incubate fully submerged in water — there is no diapause, no peat-burying, and no desiccation arrest of any kind. Incubation proceeds in water at ambient temperature; for related Aphanius species held at 72–79 °F, eggs typically hatch in 8–14 days. Fry are small on hatching but relatively advanced, and are capable of taking Artemia nauplii within a day or two of becoming free-swimming.

For aquarium breeding, collectors and breeders of congeners recommend offering dense clumps of java moss, hornwort, or synthetic spawning mops for egg deposition, removing eggs to a separate container daily or every few days to prevent adult predation, and maintaining water at a moderate temperature with slightly elevated hardness. Gentle aeration aids hatching. Adults are long-lived relative to annual killifish species — Aphanius in captivity commonly survive 3–5 years, and the absence of a seasonal die-off means the breeder is managing a persistent, continuously reproducing population rather than a crash-and-rebuild annual cycle.

Field data on clutch frequency, egg numbers, and reproductive seasonality specific to A. mesopotamicus are not available in the published record. Given the ecological disruption to the Mesopotamian marshes over the past three decades, it is uncertain whether self-sustaining wild populations from which such data could be collected still exist.

In the aquarium

Aphanius mesopotamicus is not an established aquarium species in the way that many other Aphanius are, and captive specimens are essentially absent from the hobby literature. Its closest congeners in cultivation — Aphanius fasciatus, A. sophiae, A. dispar, and others from the broader region — give the best guidance for likely care requirements. These fish are consistently kept in hard, alkaline water (pH 7.5–8.5, conductivity 1,000–3,000 µS/cm), at moderate temperatures (68–79 °F), and with the option of a small salt addition (2–5 g/L) that many keepers find beneficial for health and colour. High temperatures in summer are tolerated, consistent with the genus's extremophile credentials.

Tank size need not be large: a 15–20 US gal species tank is adequate for a group of four to six fish. Heavy planting with salt-tolerant species (Vallisneria, hornwort, java fern on driftwood) provides cover, spawning sites, and line-of-sight breaks that reduce male aggression. Filtration should be efficient but flow moderate — the fish are not adapted to strong currents. Good lighting suits the fish and encourages algal growth on glass and substrate, providing a supplemental grazing surface.

The keeping of A. mesopotamicus, should captive specimens become available, would be of genuine conservation value: maintaining a genetically diverse ex-situ population of an endemic species from one of the world's most threatened wetland systems is a meaningful contribution, and the killifish hobby has a long tradition of exactly this kind of preservation work for obscure, threatened old-world toothcarps.

Conservation

No formal IUCN Red List assessment exists for Aphanius mesopotamicus as of this writing. The species was described in 2009 from a habitat — the lower Mesopotamian marshes — that had already undergone catastrophic destruction. Between the early 1990s and 2003, the government of Iraq systematically drained the Central and Al-Hammar marshes, destroying approximately 90% of the wetland area through a network of drainage canals and embankments. This was one of the fastest and most complete wetland destructions in recorded history, and it eliminated or severely fragmented the habitat of every endemic wetland species, including any Aphanius present.

Partial restoration of the marshes began after 2003 and the area was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016 and listed as a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. Water has returned to significant portions of the Central Marshes and Al-Hammar, but full ecological recovery is far from complete, and new threats — upstream dam construction on the Tigris and Euphrates in Turkey, Iran, and Iraq that reduces seasonal flood pulses, agricultural water extraction, and oil extraction infrastructure — continue to suppress water volumes. Climate-driven intensification of drought in the region adds a further dimension of uncertainty.

No recent collections of A. mesopotamicus have been documented since the original 2009 description, which was itself based on specimens collected prior to or during the drainage period. Whether the species persists in the partially restored marshes or in residual permanent water bodies is unknown. The combination of a severely restricted endemic range, near-total habitat destruction within living memory, continued hydrological pressure, and the complete absence of post-description field records places this species in a position of serious conservation concern, regardless of the absence of an IUCN assessment.
