Aphyosemion boehmi was described by Mattern and Schreiber in 2005 in the German peer-reviewed aquarium journal Zeitschrift für Aquarien- und Terrarienkunde. The authority is presented in parentheses, indicating that subsequent workers have revised the generic assignment or combination since the original description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name, which currently stands as Aphyosemion boehmi (Mattern & Schreiber, 2005).
The genus Aphyosemion is among the largest and most taxonomically contested killifish genera, comprising dozens of described species spread across West and Central Africa. Its boundaries and internal groupings have been repeatedly revised using morphological, osteological, and molecular methods. Aphyosemion boehmi belongs to a cluster of forest-stream Aphyosemion distributed across the Gulf of Guinea hinterland and the northwestern Congo basin margin — a group that includes species such as A. gabunense, A. bualanum, and allied forms. Related species share the same basic ecology: soft-water, shaded, permanent forest streams rather than the seasonal ephemeral pools that characterise the annual killifish groups.
The specific epithet boehmi honours a person named Böhm (the Latinised possessive form), following a common convention in ichthyological nomenclature of naming new species after collectors, expedition members, or persons who facilitated the research.
Morphology
Aphyosemion boehmi is a small killifish; males reach approximately 2 in total length, with females somewhat smaller. This places it within the typical size range for forest-stream Aphyosemion, most of which are compact fish suited to the shallow, debris-choked microhabitats of leaf-litter seeps and narrow headwaters.
Like other members of its genus, males are more intensely coloured than females — a consistent pattern across the non-annual Aphyosemion. Males in the genus characteristically display intricate patterns of red, blue, and orange spots, stripes, or reticulations on the flanks and unpaired fins, the precise arrangement varying by species and often by population. Females are typically plain, olive-brown, and unmarked, blending into the leaf litter of the stream floor. Fin extensions and lyrate tail lobes in males are common in the group, and likely feature in A. boehmi as they do in close relatives. Detailed morphological data for this species remain sparse in the accessible literature given its obscurity in both the trade and formal study.
Habitat
Aphyosemion boehmi is native to West-Central Africa, in the Cameroon–Nigeria region, inhabiting small forest streams and seeps within the Guinea–Congo rainforest belt. Its closest congeners occupy comparable habitats across Cameroon, Gabon, and adjacent countries, all characterised by permanent or near-permanent flow through closed forest canopy.
Water conditions in these forest streams are chemically extreme by temperate standards: soft (conductivity typically below 100 µS/cm), acidic (pH 6.0–6.5 or lower), and heavily stained with humic and fulvic acids released by decomposing leaf litter and forest soils. Temperatures in upland forest streams run cooler than the surrounding lowland tropics, with the original description material associated with a range of roughly 68–75 °F — notably cooler than the warm lowland conditions in which many killifish are kept.
These streams are not seasonal. Unlike the ephemeral pools exploited by annual killifish genera such as Nothobranchius and Fundulopanchax, the habitats of A. boehmi maintain flow year-round, which correlates directly with the species' non-annual, plant-spawning reproductive strategy. The fish lives among submerged roots, fine-leaved aquatic plants, and floating organic debris at the water's edge.
Feeding
Aphyosemion boehmi feeds as a microinvertebrate predator in the wild, taking small aquatic invertebrates — chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and insect larvae — from the water column and from leaf litter and root tangles near the stream bed. This feeding guild is consistent across the non-annual Aphyosemion and reflects the invertebrate-rich environment of forest-stream leaf packs.
In the aquarium, the species should be offered small live or frozen foods: artemia nauplii or adults, daphnia, micro-worms, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and similar items. Dried foods may be accepted once the fish are settled, but live and frozen foods remain the primary diet for optimum condition and colour in males. The small gape dictates appropriately sized prey throughout life.
Mating
Aphyosemion boehmi is a non-annual killifish and a plant-spawner. The pair court and spawn among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, submerged roots, or fibrous spawning mops positioned near the surface or substrate, depositing individual adhesive eggs that cling to plant material rather than being buried in substrate to await a dry season.
As in other Aphyosemion, the male displays intensified colour during courtship, spreading his fins and manoeuvring alongside the female. Spawning is not a single concentrated event: the pair visit egg-laying sites over days and weeks, producing eggs at intervals throughout a prolonged spawning period. This extended, low-density spawning strategy — characteristic of plant-spawning killies living in permanent water — contrasts sharply with the rapid, synchronised mass-spawning of annual species racing against a drying pool.
Breeding
Eggs deposited on plant material or spawning mops incubate in water without diapause. There is no requirement for a dry phase or peat storage; eggs develop continuously and hatch after approximately two to three weeks depending on water temperature, at the cool end of the range incubation proceeds more slowly. Fry are small at hatching and require the finest first foods — infusoria, paramecia, or commercial fry powder — before advancing to artemia nauplii and micro-worms as they grow.
For aquarium breeding, a small species-only tank furnished with Java moss, fine-leaved plants, or synthetic spawning mops provides adequate spawning sites. Eggs can be collected by removing mops and either incubating them in a shallow dish of water with a mild antifungal agent (such as methylene blue at low concentration) or leaving them on the mop in a separate container. Because adults will eat eggs if the spawning medium is not removed, regular harvesting improves fry yields. The species is comparatively long-lived for a killifish, as expected of a permanent-water, non-annual form.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion boehmi is a specialist species suited to experienced killifish keepers rather than the general community aquarium. Its small size, preference for soft and acidic water, and sensitivity to elevated temperatures all require attention. A dedicated small tank — 10–15 US gal is ample for a pair or trio — with gentle filtration, subdued lighting, a dark substrate, and tannin-staining from Indian almond leaves or peat extract replicates the forest-stream environment closely.
Temperature should be maintained in the 68–75 °F range; the species does not tolerate the warm conditions (79–82 °F) that suit many tropical fish, and sustained warmth compromises health and longevity. Water should be soft and slightly acidic (pH 6.0–6.8). Males are territorial toward one another and can harass females relentlessly in confined quarters; keeping one male with two females, or separating pairs during intensive spawning periods, reduces stress.
The species is rare in the hobby and unlikely to be found in general fish shops; it circulates primarily through specialist killifish societies and the small community of Aphyosemion enthusiasts. Hobbyists interested in the genus should contact national killifish associations for access to captive-bred stock, and should maintain careful breeding records to preserve lineage integrity for rare species such as this one.
Conservation
Aphyosemion boehmi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List. The species is currently Not Evaluated (NE), reflecting the obscurity of a fish described only in 2005 and not yet incorporated into the IUCN freshwater fish review cycle. No population estimates, range-wide surveys, or trend data are available in the accessible literature.
The species' native habitat — closed-canopy forest streams in the Cameroon–Nigeria border region — is among the most threatened freshwater environments in Africa. The Guinea–Congo forest block faces ongoing deforestation from agricultural expansion (oil palm, cacao, subsistence cultivation), logging, and infrastructure development. Forest-stream killifish are acutely vulnerable to these pressures because they occupy narrow, often spring-fed headwaters whose flows depend entirely on intact forest cover for catchment retention; once canopy is cleared, streams warm, dry seasonally, and receive elevated sediment and nutrient loads incompatible with obligate soft-water fish.
The introduction of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) and Nile tilapia to West African freshwaters for malaria control and food production represents an additional threat to small forest killifish across the region. For A. boehmi, as for many recently described Aphyosemion, maintaining captive populations in the killifish hobby may provide insurance value against habitat-driven wild decline, even in the absence of a formal conservation programme.
