Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion ahli was described by the American ichthyologist George S. Myers in 1933. The species is named in honour of Ernst Ahl, the German ichthyologist at the Berlin Museum who worked extensively on African fishes during the early twentieth century. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Aphyosemion ahli Myers, 1933 as the valid combination, placing it in the genus Aphyosemion within the family Nothobranchiidae.
The species belongs to the A. calliurum super-species group, a cluster of closely related, allopatric West and Central African killifishes that share similar colour patterning and overlapping ranges. This grouping has taxonomic significance: wild populations of A. ahli from geographically separated drainages — the Kienke River in southern Cameroon, the Kribi area, and the Mungo River drainage in the Littoral region — show distinct colour and pattern differences that killifish specialists treat as separate strains not to be mixed in captivity. Whether any of these populations ultimately merit formal species-level recognition awaits further study.
FishBase and the IUCN both record the distribution as western and southwestern Cameroon plus the Rio Benito (Mbini) drainage of western Equatorial Guinea, consistent with the broader Lower Guinea endemic range characteristic of other members of its super-species group.
Morphology
A. ahli is a small, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum of approximately 2.5 in total length (FishBase). Like other members of the A. calliurum group, the body plan is slender but not attenuated, with the dorsal and anal fins set well back and the caudal fin elaborated in males into an extended lyre shape — the source of the common name 'lyretail'.
Sexual dimorphism is pronounced. Males carry intense red spots or dashes on the flanks against an iridescent blue-green or turquoise base, with red margining on the caudal, dorsal, and anal fins and the characteristic extended upper and lower caudal fin rays. Females are considerably plainer: an olive-brown body with modest spotting and rounded, unpatterned fins. This degree of dimorphism is typical for Aphyosemion; it reflects the strong sexual selection that operates in the still, shaded micro-habitats where visual signals carry well in the absence of current.
Habitat
The species occupies shallow, still or near-still freshwater bodies within the coastal lowland rainforest zone: swamps, quiet sections of forest streams, and temporary flood pools that persist through much of the year. FishBase characterises it as benthopelagic and non-migratory, occurring over mud substrate with accumulations of fallen leaves. These habitats are shaded by dense canopy, receive little direct sunlight, and receive significant allochthonous leaf and wood input that drives the tannin staining typical of West African forest killifish environments.
Water chemistry in these biotopes is soft, warm, and acidic. FishBase records a typical pH of 5.8; CE Fish Essentials' biotope documentation extends the range to pH 5.8–7.2 at 72–79 °F, reflecting variation across the species' range from true blackwater forest pools to slightly more open-canopy brook margins. The British Killifish Association characterises the natural habitat as small, stagnant, shallow swampy water bodies in coastal lowlands, consistent with the other sources. The species is not found in large rivers or in any kind of current-swept habitat.
The distribution is centred on the Wouri and Mungo river drainages (Littoral and South West Regions, Cameroon), with populations recorded from the Kienke River near Kribi and from the Rio Benito drainage in western Equatorial Guinea. This is a restricted endemic footprint by any measure.
Feeding
Aphyosemion ahli is an insectivore (entomophage) in the wild, feeding primarily on small invertebrates — insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans, and other small arthropods — that fall onto or develop within the still forest pools it inhabits. CE Fish Essentials' biotope account describes the species as entomophagous. This diet aligns with the ecology of the habitat: shaded, leaf-littered pools rich in aquatic invertebrates and receiving a steady input of terrestrial insects from overhanging vegetation.
In aquarium keeping, live food is strongly preferred. The British Killifish Association recommends Daphnia as the primary diet item in captivity, supplemented with other live or frozen invertebrates. The species tends to be a selective feeder and may reject dry foods, especially during an acclimatisation period. Offering a varied diet of live and frozen small invertebrates — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, small chironomid larvae — supports condition and encourages the colour intensity needed for breeding readiness.
Mating
Aphyosemion ahli is a non-annual killifish: its waters persist year-round (or near year-round) and the species does not undergo the boom-and-bust annual cycle of egg diapause and population renewal that characterises many sahelian or seasonal-floodplain killies. Instead, breeding is continuous or semi-continuous throughout the year, with the pair depositing adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plant material, root tangles, or floating spawning substrate over an extended period.
Male display is elaborate. The extended caudal fin rays and the bold red-and-blue flank patterning function as visual signals in the still, low-current water of the swamp habitat. Males court females with lateral displays and fin-spreading. The female initiates the actual spawning event — the British Killifish Association's husbandry account notes this explicitly. The pair descend briefly together to plant stems or a peat-fibre substrate near the bottom or surface to deposit individual or small clutches of eggs, which adhere to the substrate on contact.
Breeding
In captivity, A. ahli is best bred in a dedicated species pair setup — a small, dimly lit aquarium with a tight-fitting lid, soft acidic water (the BKA recommends pH 6.4, hardness 4–5 dGH), and either floating Indian Fern (Ceratopteris thalictroides) or a peat-fibre substrate layer as a spawning medium. A bare-bottomed tank with these elements makes egg retrieval easier and reduces fungal pressure.
Eggs are adhesive and can remain with the parents if the tank is well-planted and eggs are not readily visible; the BKA notes that best results come from leaving the eggs in the parents' tank rather than removing them, which contrasts with the practice for many other killies where egg removal is essential to prevent predation. Incubation takes 18–25 days at typical aquarium temperatures — slightly longer than some congeners — after which fry hatch and are free-swimming. Fry are small and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria and freshly hatched Artemia nauplii are standard. Growth is relatively rapid for an Aphyosemion and fish reach sexual maturity at approximately five months.
The species is rated as difficult to maintain and breed by experienced killifish keepers; sensitivity to water quality deterioration and a preference for live foods contribute to this reputation.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion ahli is a specialist fish for experienced aquarists with an interest in West African killifishes. The British Killifish Association rates it as difficult — more demanding than many Aphyosemion — owing to water quality sensitivity and a dependence on live food. It is not recommended for community tanks: the small size, preference for still water, low stocking density, and specific chemistry requirements make it best suited to a dedicated killifish setup.
The aquarium should be small (10 US gal is adequate for a breeding pair), well covered (killies are accomplished jumpers), and furnished with a layer of floating plants or surface cover to diffuse light and reduce stress. Soft, slightly acidic water maintained at 72–79 °F is ideal. Excellent water quality is non-negotiable — gentle filtration (a small sponge filter) and regular partial water changes are essential, but strong currents should be avoided entirely.
Keeping distinct wild population strains separate is considered important by killifish specialists; mixing Kienke River, Kribi, and Mungo drainage populations should be avoided to preserve the genetic and phenotypic integrity of each strain. The species is maintained in the hobby primarily through killifish societies and specialist breeders rather than through the mass commercial trade.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion ahli as Least Concern in February 2009, based on a range that spans multiple river drainages across a relatively stable block of coastal forest in Cameroon and western Equatorial Guinea, and no evidence of a rapid decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category. Assessors were Snoeks, Laleye, Moelants, and Contreras-MacBeath.
Despite the LC status, the species' ecological position warrants attention. Its entire range falls within the coastal lowland rainforest of the Lower Guinea biodiversity hotspot — a zone facing sustained pressure from logging, agricultural expansion (particularly oil palm), and road development that drains and fragments the shallow swamp and forest pool habitats the species depends on. Because A. ahli is restricted to still, shallow micro-habitats within a narrow coastal band, even localised habitat loss can eliminate entire local populations. The geographic separation of discrete populations in the Kienke, Kribi, and Mungo drainages, each with distinct phenotypic characteristics, suggests that the functional unit of conservation concern may be at the population level rather than the species level.
The species is not commercially harvested for food, and its presence in the ornamental killifish trade is limited to specialist collectors who typically propagate it in captivity rather than relying on wild collection. Monitoring of forest cover and stream hydrology in the Lower Guinea coastal zone remains the most relevant conservation priority for this species and its congeners.
