Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion amoenum was described by Radda and Pürzl in 1976. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the valid combination as Aphyosemion amoenum (Radda & Pürzl, 1976), placed in the family Nothobranchiidae — the African killifishes — within the speciose genus Aphyosemion. The parenthetical authority reflects the original placement in a different generic or subgeneric arrangement before the current combination was established.
The American Killifish Association classifies the species in Class 8 Mesaphyosemion, a grouping of non-annual Aphyosemion from west-central Africa that share a plant-spawning reproductive strategy and moderately elongate body form. Two synonyms are recorded in the hobby literature: Aphyosemion cameronense (the name under which some early importations circulated) and Aphyosemion raddai amoenum. The valid name amoenum derives from the Latin amoenus, meaning 'pleasant' or 'charming', an apt epithet for a fish whose combination of reddish fin coloration and delicate body patterning gave it immediate appeal when it first reached European aquarists.
At least 19 collection localities are documented in Cameroon by AKA records, including Sonmayo, Biang, Dibang, Log Bako'o, Pouma, Sakbayeme, and N'kong Mkak, suggesting that while the species' total range is geographically restricted, it is not a single-point endemic within that range. No subspecific names are currently recognised under Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Aphyosemion amoenum is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum total length of 2 in (FishBase). Like other Mesaphyosemion, the body is elongate and the caudal fin is rounded rather than lyrate or strongly extended, distinguishing it from the more elaborate finnage seen in some of the larger Aphyosemion clades. The common name red-finned killi refers to the reddish to orange-red pigment that suffuses the unpaired fins, most strongly in males.
Male ground coloration is typically blue-green to teal on the flanks, overlaid with a pattern of red-brown to rust spots or streaks that varies in intensity across collection localities. The dorsal, caudal, and anal fins carry the characteristic red edging or wash that gives the fish its vernacular name; fin patterning and the intensity of the red elements are often the most reliable way to distinguish males from different geographic populations. Females are less colourful, showing a plainer olive-brown to buff body with reduced or absent fin colour, as is typical across the genus.
Habitat
Aphyosemion amoenum inhabits rainforest brooks and seasonal to permanent inland wetlands on the coastal plain of southern Cameroon, within the watershed bounded by the Sanaga River to the north and the Nyong River to the south. This Lower Guinea forest zone is characterised by dense canopy cover that limits direct insolation, leaf litter accumulation, and soft, acidic water draining through laterite and forest soils.
The streams occupied by A. amoenum are typically shallow, slow-flowing or standing, heavily shaded, and stained amber by tannins from decaying organic matter. Water temperatures at the collection localities range from approximately 64–72 °F (FishBase), reflecting the altitude and shade buffering of forest-floor streams — cooler than the open-savanna habitats of many annual killifish to the east. pH values of 5.8–7.2 are recorded, with the lower end of that range more typical of the most tannin-rich microhabitats. The species is benthopelagic and non-migratory, spending its life within the stream or wetland pool where it was born.
Feeding
In the wild, Aphyosemion amoenum feeds as a generalist micro-predator, consuming small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms, and surface-fallen insects — in the manner typical of small Aphyosemion species occupying forest streams. The benthopelagic lifestyle places it at the interface between the water column and the substrate where such prey is concentrated.
In the aquarium the species is straightforward to feed. Live and frozen foods — Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, bloodworm, Tubifex, and micro-worm — are accepted readily and are important for conditioning breeding pairs. Many individuals can be trained onto high-quality small dried foods, but a significant proportion of live or frozen food in the diet produces the best colouration and breeding readiness. Because of its small adult size, prey items must be appropriately scaled; oversized food is ignored or damages the mouth.
Mating
Aphyosemion amoenum is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. Unlike the annual killifish of seasonal African savanna pools — which bury desiccation-resistant eggs in the substrate and die at the end of each wet season — A. amoenum inhabits permanent to near-permanent water, has no diapause phase, and spawns continuously across many months of the year in a mode shared with other Mesaphyosemion.
Spawning is a prolonged pairing event rather than a mass or group release. A ripe male courts a female with lateral displays, flaring his coloured fins and circling her closely. When she is receptive, the pair orient side by side and deposit a small number of adhesive eggs — typically one to a few per embrace — onto fine-leaved plants, floating roots, or the fibres of an artificial spawning mop near the water surface or just above the substrate. The eggs adhere on contact and are left by both parents. This slow, repeated spawning over days and weeks, rather than a single mass clutch, is the hallmark of the Mesaphyosemion reproductive mode.
Breeding
Hobbyist breeding records documented by the American Killifish Association and through BAP (Breeder Award Program) reports confirm that A. amoenum spawns reliably on acrylic yarn mops, Java moss, and similar fine-textured substrates. Eggs incubate in water at 68–72 °F without any peat or diapause treatment; the absence of a desiccation phase is one of the key practical differences between non-annual and annual killies for the keeper.
Incubation time is temperature-dependent, typically falling in the range of 14–21 days at recommended temperatures. Fry hatch at a size large enough to accept Artemia nauplii from the start, which simplifies rearing considerably compared with some micro-fry species. The adults, if left with eggs or young fry in a densely planted or mop-stocked tank, may consume some offspring, so many breeders move mops to a separate container for hatching. A breeding trio (one male, two females) or a small colony in a species tank is the standard approach recommended in the killifish hobby. The species is moderately long-lived for a killifish, surviving two or more years under good aquarium conditions — consistent with its non-annual life history in permanent waters.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion amoenum is well regarded in the killifish hobby as a rewarding, relatively undemanding Mesaphyosemion that combines attractive coloration with an approachable breeding mode. Its modest adult size of up to 2 in and cool-water preference (64–72 °F) make it compatible with other small, soft-water forest species, though it is most often kept as a species or killifish-only tank to appreciate its colours and monitor breeding.
Water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.8–7.0) and should be kept scrupulously clean, as killies are sensitive to dissolved-waste accumulation despite the tannin-stained conditions of their natural habitat. A mature, well-filtered tank with peat filtration or blackwater extract, a dark substrate, and floating or fine-leaved plants creates an environment in which males colour up to their full potential. The tank must be covered: all Aphyosemion are capable jumpers. The AKA maintains an extensive body of hobby literature on A. amoenum, with 25 or more articles in JAKA (Journal of the American Killifish Association) attesting to the species' long-standing popularity among specialist killifish keepers. Its 19 documented collection localities mean that hobbyists sometimes work with locality-specific strains, and maintaining the provenance of those strains is considered best practice in the killifish community.
Conservation
Aphyosemion amoenum is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List (criterion B1ab(iii)), assessed 16 February 2009 and published in 2010, with the assessment authored by T. Moelants. The listing rests on an estimated extent of occurrence below 5,0 mi² across a range that is both geographically restricted and continuing to decline in habitat quality. Only three locations were known to assessors at the time of evaluation, and the annotation on the assessment record notes that it 'needs updating' — reflecting both the time elapsed since the original assessment and the likelihood that targeted surveys would resolve uncertainty about the species' true range within the Sanaga–Nyong coastal plain.
The primary identified threat is pollution and sedimentation of rainforest streams arising from the expansion of industrial palm oil plantations across the Lower Guinea coastal plain of Cameroon. These operations clear forest canopy, increase erosion and run-off, and introduce agrochemical loads into the small forest brooks that A. amoenum depends on — streams that are too small and marginal to attract formal water-quality monitoring. Deforestation for smallholder agriculture compounds the same pressures at a finer scale. The species has no known protected-area stronghold within its restricted range. Continued captive hobby culture through killifish associations in Europe and North America constitutes the most active ex-situ conservation effort for the species, though no formal conservation breeding programme exists.
