The Cape Lopez lyretail is one of the most enduring and beginner-friendly killifish in the freshwater hobby — a small, vividly coloured non-annual from the lowland coastal forests of Gabon and the Republic of the Congo, known in aquaria for well over a century. Males carry rich brown flanks spangled with red spots, iridescent green shoulders, and an elaborately extended lyre-shaped tail; females are drab brown by comparison but equally hardy. Unlike the dramatic annual killifish that bury their eggs in drying mud, Aphyosemion australe spawns continuously onto plants and spawning mops in permanent or near-permanent waters, incubates its eggs in water, and can live three or more years — a longevity that sets it apart from the seasonal species that dominate killi headlines.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion australe was described by the German aquarist and ichthyologist Arnold Rachow in 1921 from material originating at Cape Lopez — today Cap Lopez or Cap Gentil, the headland at Port-Gentil in Gabon — hence the species' most widely used common name, the Cape Lopez lyretail. The authority is given in parentheses, indicating that the name has since been moved from the original generic placement. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Aphyosemion australe (Rachow, 1921), placing it in the large, predominantly West and Central African genus Aphyosemion within the family Nothobranchiidae.

The genus Aphyosemion is one of the most species-rich genera of killifish, and its internal classification has been repeatedly revised as molecular phylogenetics have clarified relationships among the numerous small, often brilliantly coloured species of the Guinea Coast, Cameroon, and Gabon. Aphyosemion australe belongs to a group of non-annual species associated with permanent or semi-permanent coastal forest streams — a distinction of fundamental biological importance, since it means the species does not produce diapausing eggs adapted to survive the desiccation of seasonal pools.

An orange- or gold-coloured ornamental variety, sometimes labelled 'hjerreseni', has circulated in the hobby for decades. It is a colour mutation rather than a genetically distinct subspecies, and the Catalog of Fishes does not recognise it as a formal taxon. Wild-type 'chocolate' individuals, by contrast, represent the fish as Rachow described it. Hobbyist strain records — notably wild-collected populations from Port Gentil (BSWG 97/24), Cape Esterias (EBT 96/27), and Parq du Mondah (BDBG 04/19) — are maintained with locality codes by dedicated killifish societies, though these designations have no formal nomenclatural standing.

Morphology

Aphyosemion australe is a small killifish reaching approximately 2.5 in total length (FishBase), with most adults in the 2–2.5 in TL range; standard length is generally reported as 2–2.5 in. The body is slender and slightly compressed, typical of the genus. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced: males are far more colourful and develop striking fin extensions, while females are cryptically drab.

The male's body ground colour is a warm chocolate-brown to coppery tan. The flanks are covered in a dense pattern of brick-red to crimson spots that often merge into short wavy streaks, particularly anteriorly. The head and shoulders can show a strong iridescent green or blue-green sheen. The dorsal and anal fins are edged in red and yellow, often with a blue-white outer margin. The caudal fin is lyrate — the upper and lower rays are drawn out into filamentous extensions that, together with fin length relative to body size, are among the most celebrated features of the species; these extensions can add 0.5 in or more beyond the natural fin outline. Several ornamental variants have been selectively bred from the wild type: an 'orange' or 'gold' form replaces the brown-red colouring with vivid orange-yellow, and albino forms also exist in the trade.

Females lack all of these ornamental traits. Their colouration is plain brown, the fins are rounded and unextended, and the overall build is marginally stockier when gravid. This extreme asymmetry in appearance between the sexes is the rule across Aphyosemion, and is one reason the genus is so popular with specialist killifish keepers who focus on the males' display.

Habitat

The Cape Lopez lyretail inhabits the lowland coastal forest zone of equatorial West-Central Africa. Its native range centres on Gabon and extends into the south-west of the Republic of the Congo, with FishBase also recording it from Angola and Cameroon. This is a narrow coastal band of lowland tropical rainforest characterised by high year-round rainfall, dense tree cover, and a network of shaded streams, seepages, and forest swamps draining short coastal rivers to the Atlantic.

Unlike annual killifish, which colonise isolated seasonal pools that dry completely between rains, Aphyosemion australe occupies permanent or near-permanent water bodies: small forest streams, swampy depressions, and slow-moving ditches with overhead canopy cover. These waters are typically soft and acidic, tannin-stained by decaying leaf litter and forest debris, with low conductivity and negligible carbonate hardness. FishBase records water parameters of pH 6.0–7.0 and hardness around 5–12 dH; Seriously Fish gives a slightly wider range of pH 5.5–7.0 with very low to moderate hardness. Temperatures in these shaded coastal forest habitats tend to be stable and mild: the aquarium literature consistently gives 70–75 °F as the optimum, and Seriously Fish extends the upper tolerance to around 90 °F in open conditions, though the fish does best in the lower portion of that range.

The species is associated with areas of dense riparian vegetation, submerged roots, and floating plant matter — the structural features of its microhabitat that it uses both for cover and as spawning substrate.

Feeding

In the wild, Aphyosemion australe is an opportunistic micro-predator, feeding primarily on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto or live in the water column: mosquito larvae, small worms, micro-crustaceans, daphnia, and other zooplankton-scale prey. This diet reflects the productivity of a well-shaded forest stream environment where terrestrial insect input to the water surface is a significant food subsidy.

In captivity the species is straightforward to feed. It readily accepts a wide variety of small live and frozen invertebrates — bloodworm, daphnia, artemia, and tubifex are all taken with enthusiasm — and will also accept high-quality small pelleted and flake foods, though live and frozen foods are recommended as the dietary core to maintain colour and breeding condition. Because of its small mouth, food particle size should be appropriate: large pellets are unsuitable. Multiple small feedings per day are preferable to a single large meal.

Mating

The Cape Lopez lyretail is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. This is not a trivial distinction: in the hobby and in nature, it defines the entire biology of the fish. Where annual species race through a compressed life cycle — spawning frantically before their pool dries, burying eggs in substrate that must survive months without water — Aphyosemion australe lives in permanent water, breeds more or less continuously throughout the year, and pairs spawn repeatedly over an extended period rather than in a single concentrated event.

Mating is a quiet, prolonged affair. A receptive male courts the female with lateral displays, spreading his dorsal and caudal fins to show their full ornamental extent. When the female responds, the pair move close together near a clump of fine-leaved plants, floating roots, or a spawning mop and hang side by side. Eggs are deposited singly or in small clusters, with the male fertilising them as they are laid. A typical pair produces around 10–20 eggs per day and may continue spawning productively for several weeks or months, as long as conditioning and water quality are maintained.

Breeding

Breeding Aphyosemion australe is considered one of the more accessible killifish projects, and the species is often recommended as the entry point to the family for new hobbyists. Eggs are adhesive and attach to fine-leaved plants or synthetic mop fibres, where they incubate in water at ambient temperature. At 70–75 °F, incubation takes approximately 10–20 days, with fry hatching as small but fully formed miniatures capable of immediately accepting infusoria or commercial fry-powder foods. By the end of the first week, nauplii of brine shrimp and microworms can be introduced; growth is steady and young fish reach 0.5 in in around 6–8 weeks.

A practical alternative used by many killifish keepers is to harvest the mop or plant clump periodically, allow it to drain, and store the egg-laden material on barely moist peat or paper towels in a sealed container for 18–24 days at room temperature before flooding again. This peat-storage method concentrates hatching and is convenient for hobbyists who want to ship eggs or stagger fry batches, though unlike in annual species no true diapause is occurring — the eggs are simply slowing development slightly in reduced moisture rather than entering a genetically programmed dormancy.

Because adults will consume eggs and fry, dedicated spawning tanks with minimal competition work best. A pair or trio (one male, two females) in a small, heavily planted or mop-equipped tank produces eggs reliably without the physical toll of constant male attention on a single female. The species is long-lived for a killifish: well-kept individuals routinely reach 2–3 years in captivity, and some reports note three or more years under excellent conditions.

In the aquarium

The Cape Lopez lyretail has been a mainstay of the ornamental trade for over a century, and its staying power reflects genuine virtues: it is peaceful, undemanding, long-lived by killifish standards, and the male's colouration rivals any small freshwater fish. It is also one of the few killifish that adapts readily to a community setting, provided tankmates are similarly peaceful, small, and do not nip fins — the ornamental caudal extensions of a male lyretail are an irresistible target for fin-nippers.

The optimal aquarium is modestly sized, well-planted or furnished with floating plants and spawning mops, and maintained at 70–75 °F with soft, mildly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0, low hardness). Filtration should provide gentle flow; this is a fish of calm, still forest waters and it does not thrive with strong current. Tannin-stained water produced by Indian almond leaves or driftwood suits the species biologically and improves male colour. Surface cover matters — the fish is a capable jumper and requires a tight-fitting lid.

Ornamental colour forms (orange, gold, albino) are widely available and often more common in the trade than wild-type 'chocolate' fish. Hobbyists interested in maintaining wild genetics should seek out fish with locality codes from reputable killifish society sources, as the two colour forms freely interbreed and the ornamental strains have been in captivity long enough that they may differ behaviourally and physiologically from wild populations. Males of any form are best kept one to a tank unless ample space is provided; two males in close quarters will fight and fin-damage is a common consequence.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion australe as Least Concern in February 2009 (taxon ID 181981), citing a reasonably wide distribution across lowland coastal Gabon and Congo and no evidence of population-level decline at the time of assessment. The species is also well established in captivity, with stable ornamental trade populations that could in principle support reintroduction if wild numbers were to decline.

Nevertheless, the lowland coastal forest zone that this species calls home is under mounting pressure. Gabon's forests, while among the best-preserved in Central Africa, face increasing extraction activity — both legal logging and artisanal mining — and the small, shaded coastal streams that Aphyosemion australe inhabits are particularly vulnerable to sedimentation, canopy removal, and water-quality changes driven by land clearance. The narrow coastal strip of its distribution means that habitat loss is not spread across a continental range but concentrated in a geographically limited area. The introduction of mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) for mosquito control in West Africa, a recurring threat to small native stream fishes, is a further concern in some parts of the range. The 2009 assessment is now over 15 years old, and a reassessment reflecting current deforestation trends in the region would be timely.
