Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion buytaerti was described by the Austrian killifish authorities Alfred C. Radda and Jean-Henri Huber in 1978. The valid combination is maintained in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) as Aphyosemion buytaerti Radda & Huber, 1978. The American Killifish Association places the species in its Class 8 (Mesaphyosemion), reflecting the classification systems used in competitive killifish circles rather than a formal phylogenetic subgenus in current usage.
The species was described from material collected near Ogooué village on the Ékouma River in southern Congo — a type locality that multiple subsequent collectors have revisited, yielding the locality codes RPC 91/11, BSW 99-3, BSWG 97/03, and additional Gabonese material from the Lendoungou drainage (EBT 96/2). Each collection locality is tracked separately in the hobby, as colour pattern and finnage can differ appreciably between strains. The AKA catalogue records at least eighteen articles in the JAKA journal addressing various aspects of the species' care and collection, reflecting its long engagement with the killifish hobby.
The specific epithet honours John Buytaert (1944–2012), a Belgian killifish collector and active figure in the international killifish community whose fieldwork contributed to the discovery and documentation of this and other West African aplocheiloid species.
Morphology
Aphyosemion buytaerti is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching approximately 2 in in length (FishBase). Like other Mesaphyosemion, the male is substantially more colourful than the female: the body is typically decorated with a mosaic of red, blue, and orange spots and streaks on an iridescent green or teal ground, with extended and patterned unpaired fins. The intensity and precise arrangement of the colour pattern varies between collection localities, which is why hobbyists track strains by their collection codes.
Females are cryptically coloured in olive-brown with sparse spotting and rounded fins — a classic dimorphic killifish pattern. The lateral line is incomplete, as is typical of the family. The mouth is terminal and slightly upturned, adapted for surface and near-surface feeding. The species lacks the elongate caudal fin extensions seen in some related groups but typically shows graceful dorsal and anal fin development in mature males.
Habitat
Aphyosemion buytaerti is known from the Ékouma River and associated streams in the southern Republic of Congo, and from the Lendoungou drainage in adjacent Gabon — both tributaries of the greater Ogooué system in the equatorial rainforest belt of Central-West Africa. The Baensch Aquarium Atlas notes that the species has a small, restricted distribution known only from this drainage system.
The habitat is characterised as small, shallow forest streams flowing through equatorial rainforest, carrying soft, acidic, tannin-stained water with abundant organic debris — leaf litter, submerged roots, and decaying wood. The streams are typically shaded by closed-canopy rainforest. Water chemistry data from FishBase records pH 6.5 and approximately 66 °F, with very low hardness (around 10 ppm). The killi.co.uk database places the preferred aquarium range at 61–66 °F, reflecting that these are cooler foothill or plateau streams rather than the hot lowland watercourses that some Aphyosemion species prefer.
Because the streams are in permanent rainforest rather than seasonal savanna, the water flows year-round. This explains the non-annual life history: the fish are long-lived plant-spawners that do not need drought-resistant diapausing eggs to survive dry seasons. Dense vegetation of grasses and sedges along the stream margins provides cover and spawning substrate.
Feeding
Like virtually all Aphyosemion, A. buytaerti is a micro-predator in the wild, taking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and surface-drifting insects — from the water column and surface film in its forest stream habitat. The upturned mouth and generalised killifish body plan are well suited to intercepting prey at or near the surface.
In captivity the species accepts live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, Tubifex, Chironomus (bloodworm), and similar invertebrate prey are all appropriate. Small, live foods appear to stimulate breeding condition. Dried foods are accepted by established fish but should not form the dietary staple. Feeding once or twice daily in small portions consistent with what the fish can consume quickly keeps the water quality stable — critical for a species that demands clean, soft water.
Mating
Aphyosemion buytaerti reproduces by the non-annual plant-spawning mode: pairs produce adhesive eggs that are attached singly or in small numbers to fine-leaved plants, floating mops, or submerged roots near the surface or across the substrate over days or weeks. There is no diapause and no buried-peat incubation phase; the eggs develop directly in water. This strategy reflects the permanence of the forest stream habitat, where standing water persists year-round and the fish can afford to spawn continuously in small clutches rather than concentrating reproduction into a brief wet-season pulse.
Courtship involves the male displaying his full colour to the female, flaring unpaired fins and manoeuvring alongside her. Spawning takes place among fine-leaved vegetation or within spawning mops; the eggs are small, adhesive, and relatively robust compared to annual killifish eggs. The male takes no role in guarding eggs or fry after fertilisation. Multiple spawning events occur over the lifespan of a healthy pair.
Breeding
The species has a reputation in the hobby as one of the most difficult Aphyosemion to breed successfully. The killi.co.uk database notes two successful strategies: the classic spawning-mop method (pairs deposit eggs that are collected and water-incubated) and a long-term colony approach in which fry appear naturally among adults when water conditions and tank decor are correct. Either approach requires very soft, clean, acidic water at 61–66 °F — higher temperatures appear to suppress breeding and increase stress.
Eggs collected from mops can be incubated in shallow dishes or peat fibre at the same temperature with a few drops of methylene blue to suppress fungus. Incubation typically takes two to three weeks at 64 °F. Fry are small at hatching and require appropriately sized first foods: infusoria, micro-worms, or freshly hatched Artemia nauplii. Partial water changes with very soft, slightly acidic water during rearing help maintain health. Consistent water quality is more important for this species than for most Aphyosemion; fluctuations appear to trigger health decline. The difficulty rating in the hobby ranges from average to very difficult, depending on the water available to the keeper.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion buytaerti is an aquarium species best suited to the specialist killifish keeper. A small species tank of 10–15 US gal is sufficient for a pair or a small group; the tank should be heavily planted with fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Ceratophyllum, or similar) and floating mops to provide cover and spawning sites. A dark substrate and tannin-stained water achieved with peat filtration or Indian almond leaves reproduces the shaded forest stream character of the natural habitat and seems to improve the fishes' colour and willingness to breed.
Water quality must be consistently soft (below 100 ppm total hardness), acidic (pH 6.0–6.8), and clean; the species does not tolerate elevated nitrates or organic pollution. Temperature should be maintained at 61–66 °F — a cooler range than most tropicals, achievable without a heater in a cool room or with an aquarium fan in warm climates. A tight-fitting lid is advisable as killies are skilled jumpers.
Conspecific aggression between males is generally manageable in a well-planted tank. Males display intensely and are best kept with a higher ratio of females to males to distribute attention. The species can be housed with other small, peaceful inhabitants of similar water chemistry requirements, but the tank's specific chemistry demands mean tankmates must be chosen carefully. Its locality-coded collection strains make it a rewarding species for hobbyists interested in both the fish and the conservation context of documented wild populations.
Conservation
Aphyosemion buytaerti is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, as evaluated by T. Moelants in 2009. While the status does not indicate immediate threat, the species occupies a notably restricted range — the Ékouma River drainage and adjacent Lendoungou basin in southern Republic of Congo and Gabon — and its forest stream habitat is subject to the pressures affecting equatorial rainforest across Central Africa: logging, subsistence agriculture, and associated watershed degradation.
The equatorial rainforest of the Congo Basin and Gabon remains comparatively intact relative to West African forests, but expansion of extractive industries and infrastructure into previously inaccessible areas poses a growing risk to forest headwaters. Species with small, single-watershed distributions like A. buytaerti are inherently vulnerable to localised disturbance; the loss of forest cover changes stream hydrology, raises water temperatures, and introduces sedimentation that can eliminate the soft-water, heavily shaded microhabitat these fish require.
The hobby's practice of maintaining geographically documented strains by collection code (RPC 91/11, BSWG 97/03, EBT 96/2) preserves important genetic and morphological diversity and provides a living record of known wild populations. Active hobbyist documentation of collection localities contributes to knowledge of the species' distribution that may be more current than formal survey data.
