A small, non-annual killifish of the Congo River basin, Aphyosemion castaneum occupies permanent or near-permanent forest streams and pools in the Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo, where soft, acidic, tannin-stained water filters through the equatorial lowlands. Like many members of its genus, it is a plant spawner — pairs deposit adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation or spawning mops over extended periods, with no diapause — placing it among the more accessible Aphyosemion for killifish hobbyists willing to maintain the cool, pristine water it demands. Assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, it nonetheless shares the vulnerability common to Congo basin forest specialists: its range is tied to intact riparian forest, and basin-wide pressures of deforestation and land conversion are slowly reshaping those systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion castaneum was described by George S. Myers in 1924. The type locality is associated with the Pool Malebo area and surrounding Congo River tributaries, including the Alima, Aruwimi, and Tshopo rivers — a broad central Congo distribution that reflects the historical difficulty of precise collection data from this part of the basin. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Aphyosemion castaneum Myers, 1924.

The genus Aphyosemion is one of the most species-rich and taxonomically active genera in the family Nothobranchiidae, with well over 100 described species and a complex history of synonymies and reassignments. The genus is divided informally into species groups based on coloration pattern, scale count, and molecular phylogenies; the placement of castaneum within that internal grouping remains part of the broader, ongoing revision of African killifish systematics. The specific epithet castaneum is Latin for 'chestnut-coloured', alluding to the warm brown to reddish-brown base colouration of the species. The pronunciation approximates af-ee-oh-SEE-mee-on kas-TAN-ee-um.

Morphology

Aphyosemion castaneum is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching approximately 1.5 in standard length (FishBase), placing it among the smaller members of the genus. The body plan is the classic Aphyosemion form: elongate, with a slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding, a rounded or slightly pointed snout, and unpaired fins positioned toward the rear of the body — the dorsal fin set well back, nearly opposite the anal fin.

Colouration is centred on a warm chestnut to reddish-brown ground colour on the flanks and back, typically overlaid with iridescent blue-green or turquoise spotting or banding that varies with population and individual condition. The fins — particularly the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins — often carry red or orange patterning with pale to white marginal edges, a common ornamental feature across the Aphyosemion radiation. Females are plainer: a drab brownish body with reduced or absent fin ornamentation, a reliable secondary sexual character common throughout the genus.

Habitat

The species is native to the Congo River basin, with confirmed occurrence in both the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo (FishBase). Key tributary systems include rivers draining the central basin — the Alima, Aruwimi, and Tshopo — as well as the Pool Malebo area near Kinshasa. Populations have also been reported from the Lobaye River and from the Kisangani region further upstream (AKA).

Like most forest-zone Aphyosemion, A. castaneum inhabits permanent or near-permanent shallow water: leaf-littered pools, slow-flowing forest streams, swamp margins, and drainage ditches embedded within the equatorial lowland rainforest. Water in these environments is characteristically soft (hardness around 5 dGH or 60–100 ppm GH) and mildly to moderately acidic (pH approximately 5.6–6.6 in reported collection zones, with FishBase giving a neutral-adjacent pH of around 7 at the type locality). Water temperature in the shaded equatorial lowlands is stable, sitting in the range of roughly 73–77 °F year-round. The water is typically tannin-stained, with low mineral content — conditions produced by the decay of leaf litter and organic matter under the forest canopy.

Because this is a non-annual species, it does not depend on seasonal desiccation or peat substrates. Its habitats hold water year-round, and the fish are long-lived relative to annual killifish of comparable size.

Feeding

In the wild, Aphyosemion castaneum feeds on plankton and small invertebrates at and near the water surface — the upturned mouth and rear-set fins are both adaptations for this surface-oriented foraging style, common across the Aphyosemion radiation. Small aquatic insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans, and zooplankton form the probable core of the wild diet.

In the aquarium the species accepts a variety of small live and frozen foods readily. Daphnia, cyclops, artemia nauplii, and small chironomid larvae (bloodworms in appropriate sizes) are all suitable. Dry foods are accepted by many individuals once acclimated, though a live or frozen diet generally produces the best colouration and breeding condition. Because of the fish's small size, food particle dimensions must be appropriate — only items that fit comfortably in the relatively small mouth should be offered.

Mating

Aphyosemion castaneum is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. Rather than burying eggs in peat or soil to survive a dry season, pairs deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, moss, surface roots, or floating nylon spawning mops over an extended period spanning days to weeks. There is no diapause: the eggs develop continuously in water and hatch in a matter of days without any dry-storage phase.

Males court females with lateral displays that show off their ornamental colouration — spreading the fins, arching the body, and positioning alongside the female to encourage her toward a spawning site. The spawning act itself is brief: the pair press their bodies together near plant matter or a mop fibre, and one or a few eggs are deposited and fertilised before the pair separate and resume foraging. This scatter-and-continue strategy, repeated many times per day, produces a steady trickle of eggs rather than a single large clutch — a pattern typical of Aphyosemion plant spawners. Males and females generally cohabitate without serious aggression in a well-planted or mop-equipped aquarium.

Breeding

Producing offspring from Aphyosemion castaneum is straightforward by the standards of the genus, provided water quality is kept high. Hobbyist accounts (AKA) emphasise cool, very soft, acidic water as the key parameter: temperatures of 73–75 °F, pH 5.6–6.6, and hardness in the range of 60–100 ppm GH are recommended, with rainwater, RO water, or low-mineral well water producing the best egg output. Weekly water changes of 20–30% appear critical for sustained spawning activity.

Eggs are deposited on fine-leaved plants — Red Melon Sword plants have been documented as a preferred substrate — or on nylon spawning mops. Because adults will eat eggs and small fry, hobbyists routinely check mops or plant roots daily and transfer eggs individually to small rearing containers filled with the same water, or remove the spawning mop and replace it with a fresh one on a weekly cycle. Eggs incubate in water at room temperature and hatch in approximately 12–18 days depending on temperature; newly hatched fry are small and require infusoria or commercial fry powder as first food before being weaned onto larger items such as newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. The fry grow steadily and are considerably less fragile than annual killi fry, reflecting the non-annual lifestyle's association with more stable, permanent water conditions.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion castaneum is a rewarding aquarium fish for the killifish enthusiast willing to provide the specific water chemistry it performs best in. A small species aquarium of 10–15 US gal is ample for a breeding trio or pair; the tank should be planted with fine-leaved vegetation, floating plants, or peat-fibre spawning mops, and the lighting kept low to moderate to encourage natural behaviour and display. A tight-fitting cover is important — like most killifish, A. castaneum is an adept jumper.

Water chemistry is the primary consideration: soft, acidic conditions (pH 5.6–6.6, hardness 60–100 ppm GH, temperature 73–75 °F) produce the best colouration, health, and breeding behaviour. Hard or alkaline tap water will suppress both colour and reproductive activity. Regular partial water changes with appropriately conditioned water are a non-negotiable maintenance requirement. The species is not particularly robust in community settings; it is best kept with other small, peaceful, soft-water species if a community arrangement is desired, or in a species-only setup.

Within the killifish hobby, Aphyosemion species are widely traded and maintained by specialist societies. A. castaneum is less commonly encountered than the most popular Aphyosemion species but is maintained by dedicated killifish keepers and occasionally appears at killifish association auctions and in species-specialist trade. Its modest size, manageable care requirements, and attractive coloration make it a fine introduction to non-annual African killifish keeping.

Conservation

The IUCN assesses Aphyosemion castaneum as Least Concern — a status reflecting the species' relatively broad distribution across multiple major tributaries of the Congo River basin and the fact that no immediate population collapse has been documented. The Congo basin is the second largest tropical forest system on Earth, and large areas of its interior remain in comparatively intact condition, buffering many basin-endemic species from the sharpest conservation pressures.

Nonetheless, the species' dependence on permanent, soft-water forest streams makes it sensitive to habitat degradation. Deforestation and land conversion in the Republic of Congo and DRC — driven by agricultural expansion, charcoal production, artisanal logging, and infrastructure development — progressively removes the riparian forest cover that maintains the water chemistry and thermal stability these habitats require. Sedimentation from cleared land degrades stream quality, and any narrowing of the species' effective range increases vulnerability to local stochastic events. Introductions of invasive mosquitofish (Gambusia) into Congo basin systems, while not as severe a pressure as in other parts of Africa, also represent a latent risk to small surface-oriented species such as A. castaneum.

Monitoring of the Congo basin's killifish fauna is limited by the logistical difficulty of accessing much of the basin's interior, and the true population status of many species — including this one — is imprecisely known. The Least Concern assessment should be interpreted in that context of limited data rather than as confirmation of abundance or stability.
