Aphyosemion chauchei is a small, non-annual killifish from the rainforest streams of the northern Republic of Congo, where it inhabits the Likona River system — a tributary of the middle Congo River basin. First collected by Jean H. Huber in 1978 in the forest spurs west of Makoua, it was introduced to the aquarium hobby in 1991 and remains a specialist's fish: rarely imported, sometimes confused with the closely related Aphyosemion lamberti, and distinguished from that species by the yellow border on its anal fin. The IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, reflecting how little is known of its ecology and population status in an increasingly pressured rainforest landscape.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion chauchei was described by Radda and Huber in 1978, with the first scientific treatment published in Huber and Scheel (1981). The type locality is a slow-flowing rainforest stream approximately 12 mi east of Mtoumbi on the road towards Makoua in northeastern Congo, where Huber collected the species in the forest spurs of the Congo plateau. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) recognises the valid name as Aphyosemion chauchei Radda & Huber, 1978; Killi-data.org places it in the nominotypical subgenus Aphyosemion (Aphyosemion) and lists no synonyms.

The species belongs to a cluster of related Congolese Aphyosemion that share a broadly similar red-spotted and blue-flanked pattern: it is most easily confused with A. lamberti, from which it is distinguished by the yellow margin on the anal fin. The AKA reference library notes that its southern distribution is bounded by open savannah, where A. schioetzi takes over — a pattern of parapatric replacement common among Aphyosemion species whose ranges track forest cover.

Multiple collecting localities are documented within the Likona system. Hobbyist records refer to a strain labelled 'Ouesso foret' (forest population near Ouesso), indicating that at least one geographically distinct collecting form has circulated in European killiefish circles. Whether these populations show meaningful morphological or colour differences has not been formally studied.

Morphology

Aphyosemion chauchei is a slender killifish reaching approximately 1.5–2 in total length, with FishBase giving a maximum of 2 in TL and hobbyist accounts placing most adults closer to 1.5 in. The body form is typical of the mid-sized Aphyosemion: elongated and laterally compressed, with the dorsal fin set well back and the caudal fin rounded or slightly lyrate in mature males.

Colouration in males is the defining diagnostic character. The flanks are blue-green to turquoise, overlaid with red spots or short streaks arranged in rough rows — a pattern shared with A. lamberti and several other Congolese congeners. The key distinguishing mark is the yellow border on the anal fin; A. lamberti lacks this feature. The dorsal fin typically carries red edging, and the caudal fin is patterned with red and may show extension of the upper and lower rays in dominant males. Females are substantially plainer: brownish to olive with faint spotting, a shorter finnage, and a rounder body profile.

Sexual dimorphism in colour and fin development is strong, as in virtually all Aphyosemion, and provides a reliable guide for sexing adults. Juveniles of both sexes resemble females until approximately three months of age, when males begin to develop full colouration.

Habitat

The Likona River is a tributary of the middle Congo River basin in the Republic of Congo. Aphyosemion chauchei inhabits permanent or near-permanent streams and pools within lowland rainforest — shaded, slow-flowing water running over leaf litter and sandy substrate beneath closed forest canopy. FishBase records the collection parameters as pH 5.8 and 72 °F, consistent with the soft, mildly acidic blackwater typical of West and Central African forest streams: water stained by tannins and humic acids from decomposing leaf litter, very low in dissolved minerals, and lacking the thermal fluctuations of open-country waters.

The species is described as a freshwater resident with no tolerance for seasonal desiccation — it is non-annual and depends on streams that retain water year-round. Its southern boundary is defined by the transition from closed forest to savannah, where conditions become unsuitable and A. schioetzi fills the equivalent ecological role. The northern extent of its range has not been well documented.

The AKA reference library notes that temperatures in captivity rarely exceed 75 °F and that the fish is sensitive to elevated temperatures, again reflecting its origin in shaded forest streams where daytime temperatures are buffered by canopy and water depth. This thermal sensitivity is an important consideration for aquarium maintenance.

Feeding

Like other small Aphyosemion, A. chauchei is a carnivore feeding primarily on small invertebrates in the wild — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and surface insects that fall onto the water. The species hunts visually in the mid-water and near the surface, typical of killifish whose upturned mouths are adapted for seizing prey at or just below the waterline.

In captivity the fish accepts a range of live and frozen invertebrate foods readily. Artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii and adults, Daphnia, Cyclops, and small chironomid larvae (bloodworm) are all eagerly taken and support good colour and condition. High-quality small dried foods formulated for killifish are accepted by established fish, though most keepers use live or frozen foods as the staple. Given the soft, cool, acidic water chemistry requirements, water quality should be maintained carefully — overfeeding and the resultant dissolved organic load can quickly degrade conditions in the small, lightly filtered aquaria that suit the species.

Mating

Aphyosemion chauchei is a non-annual killifish and a plant or mop spawner: the pair deposit individual adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, roots, or the fibres of artificial spawning mops, without burying eggs in substrate or employing any form of diapause. This mode is typical of Aphyosemion species from permanent forest streams, in contrast to the annual killifish of seasonal savannahs whose eggs survive dry seasons buried in soil.

Courting males display intensely to females, spreading their fins and adopting the laterally compressed posture that shows off the flank colouration to best advantage. Dominant males may be aggressive toward subordinate males and should be managed accordingly — most keepers maintain a single male with two or three females, or keep pairs separately. Spawning is a sustained daily or near-daily activity rather than a single mass-release event: the pair visit mops or plant thickets repeatedly, depositing a few eggs at a time over weeks or months. This continuous, low-intensity output is the defining rhythm of non-annual killifish reproduction.

Breeding

Eggs are collected by regular inspection of spawning mops or plants. They are small, adhesive, and translucent, and should be picked individually from the mop fibres and placed in shallow incubation containers — small petri dishes or deli cups with a little aquarium water — away from the adults, which will consume them given the opportunity. Incubation at 68–72 °F takes approximately two to three weeks, depending on temperature; slightly cooler incubation slows development but reduces the risk of fungus in the warm conditions the adults prefer.

Fry are tiny at hatching but free-swimming from the outset and able to take Artemia nauplii almost immediately, making initial feeding more straightforward than for many other killifish. Infusoria or commercial powdered fry food for the first day or two, followed rapidly by newly hatched brine shrimp, is a standard rearing protocol. Growth is moderate and colour development in males begins within two to three months.

The species is not considered difficult to breed but is described by the AKA as difficult to maintain, implying that water quality and temperature control are the main challenges. Soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, very low hardness) and temperatures kept below 75 °F appear to be prerequisites for long-term success and good condition.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion chauchei is a specialist's fish that rarely appears in the mainstream aquarium trade. It has been maintained and bred by killifish hobbyists in Europe and North America since its introduction to the hobby in 1991, with the Killifish Association networks (AKA and its European equivalents) being the most reliable source of eggs or fish. The AKA describes it as difficult to maintain — a caution that relates primarily to its intolerance of warm temperatures and its need for consistently soft, acidic, clean water rather than any particular behavioural complexity.

A small species aquarium of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a breeding group; heavy planting with fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Taxiphyllum, Ceratopteris) or the provision of artificial spawning mops serves both as decor and as a spawning substrate. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter — so as not to disturb the surface and to maintain low flow. Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, hardness below 100 ppm) kept at 68–72 °F is the target. Regular small water changes with well-conditioned, appropriately softened water are more important than tank volume.

The fish are peaceful toward each other and toward other small killies or similarly sized non-predatory species that tolerate the same cool, acidic conditions, though most experienced keepers maintain Aphyosemion species in dedicated single-species setups. A tight-fitting lid is necessary, as killies are capable jumpers.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessment of 2009, authored by T. Moelants, places Aphyosemion chauchei in the Data Deficient (DD) category. The rating reflects a fundamental lack of population data rather than a finding that the species is secure: its range within the Likona River system in the Republic of Congo has not been surveyed in depth, and no quantitative population estimates exist.

The Republic of Congo retains extensive lowland rainforest in its northern and central regions, but logging concessions, road construction, and small-scale agriculture are advancing into previously undisturbed watersheds across the Congo basin. Aphyosemion species from restricted forest-stream systems are inherently vulnerable to habitat degradation, because their soft-water, shaded, low-flow habitats are rapidly altered by canopy removal — siltation, temperature rise, and increased dissolved solids can render a previously suitable stream uninhabitable within a single dry season. The southern range boundary of A. chauchei is already defined by the edge of forest cover, leaving no further southern retreat.

No targeted conservation measures are in place for this species. Its maintenance by killifish societies provides a small insurance population in captivity, and the AKA reference library documents its presence in European fish rooms since at least the 1990s. An updated IUCN assessment with field survey data from the Likona system would be the most important single step toward understanding the species' true status.
