Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion exigoideum was described by Arthur Radda and Jean-Henri Huber in 1977. The species belongs to the large and diverse genus Aphyosemion, the core group of West and Central African non-annual killies, placed within the family Nothobranchiidae by most current classifications. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name Aphyosemion exigoideum Radda & Huber, 1977.
The specific epithet exigoideum is built from the name of its congener Aphyosemion exiguum (the jewel killi) plus the Greek suffix -oideus, meaning 'like' or 'resembling'. The name thus translates as 'resembling exiguum', a direct reference to the similar male coloration shared between the two species. EtyFish records this derivation explicitly. A key practical point for collectors and hobbyists: the colour pattern of male A. exigoideum is similar enough to A. exiguum that the two species have historically been confused in the trade, and correct identification relies on details of finnage pattern and, ultimately, geographic origin — A. exigoideum is a coastal Gabon endemic, not a wide-ranging West African species.
Within Aphyosemion, the genus is split into informal species groups by many ichthyologists, though the higher-level groupings within the genus remain subject to ongoing revision as molecular data accumulate. A. exigoideum has not been assigned a universally agreed position within any subgroup in readily available sources.
Morphology
Aphyosemion exigoideum is a slender, elongate killifish reaching a maximum total length of approximately 2.5 in (FishBase), though many individuals in the aquarium settle at 1.5–2 in. Like most Aphyosemion, males are more vividly coloured than females and carry the ornate finnage typical of the genus.
Males display the rich red-and-blue patterning characteristic of the exiguum-like Aphyosemion group — a mosaic of red or brownish-red spots and streaks over a blue-green or yellow-green body ground colour, with the unpaired fins (dorsal, caudal, and anal) carrying red marginal bands and extensions. The caudal fin may show pointed or lyrate lobes depending on individual variation. Females are considerably plainer — an olive to brownish ground colour with minimal or reduced spotting — and are rounder-bodied when gravid. The similar coloration to A. exiguum in males is what drove the species' name and can complicate hobbyist identification.
Habitat
Aphyosemion exigoideum is restricted to the coastal rainforest belt of western Gabon, in the Atlantic drainage. Its habitat consists of small forest brooks, pools, and swampy areas within the lowland rainforest — the type of soft, slow-moving or still water typical of many West and Central African Aphyosemion species.
Water conditions recorded for this species (FishBase) include a temperature range of 72–75 °F, pH 7.0–7.5, and very soft water with a hardness of dH 1–2. The near-neutral pH is slightly higher than the acidic blackwater conditions favoured by some West African Aphyosemion, possibly reflecting the specific geology of the Gabonese coastal plain. The water is typically stained with tannins and humic acids from leaf litter, shaded by the rainforest canopy, and rich in aquatic invertebrates that form the natural food base.
Critically, this is a non-annual killifish: it inhabits permanent or near-permanent water bodies and does not rely on seasonal drying or diapause-capable eggs. Its life strategy is therefore comparable to other non-annual Aphyosemion rather than to the annual killifish of ephemeral savanna pools.
Feeding
In the wild, Aphyosemion exigoideum feeds on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, as is typical across the genus. Forest stream killies of this kind take a variety of prey at or near the water surface and in the mid-water column: small insects and their larvae, aquatic crustaceans, worms, and any small terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water.
In captivity the species is straightforward to feed. It accepts small live and frozen foods readily — Daphnia, bloodworm, tubifex, and Artemia (brine shrimp nauplii or adults) are all taken with enthusiasm. Dry foods of appropriate size (micro-pellets, quality flake) can supplement the diet, though live and frozen foods should form the core of the feeding regime to maintain condition and breeding readiness. Feeding two or three times daily in small amounts suits the species well.
Mating
Aphyosemion exigoideum is a non-annual killifish and a bottom spawner. Unlike the annual killies of ephemeral pools that bury eggs in peat substrate for extended diapause over a dry season, A. exigoideum pairs deposit adhesive eggs on or near the substrate — on fine-leaved plants, spawning mops placed low in the aquarium, or directly on the bottom — over an extended period. Spawning occurs in bouts rather than as a single event, with the pair engaging in repeated brief spawning drives over days and weeks.
Male courtship involves lateral displays presenting the coloured flanks and spread fins to the female. The male manoeuvres alongside or beneath the female, and the pair press together briefly while eggs and sperm are released. Egg numbers per spawning drive are modest — typical of mop-spawning Aphyosemion — but production is sustained over the breeding season.
Breeding
Eggs of Aphyosemion exigoideum are adhesive and are deposited singly or in small clusters on substrate material or fine plant matter. FishBase records an incubation period of approximately one month in water at the species' natural temperature range (72–75 °F). There is no diapause: the eggs develop continuously and hatch as fully formed fry that are immediately free-swimming. No parental care is provided — adults may consume eggs or small fry if given the opportunity, so eggs are best collected and incubated separately, or the spawning medium (plants or mops) removed to a separate rearing container.
Raising the fry follows the standard approach for non-annual Aphyosemion: newly hatched fry are small but accept micro-foods immediately. Infusoria or paramecia as a first food, followed quickly by baby brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worms, support rapid early growth. Water quality should be maintained carefully at this stage. The species is relatively long-lived compared with annual killies, and adults can breed for a year or more under good aquarium conditions.

In the aquarium
Aphyosemion exigoideum is well-suited to a small, species-only or conspecific-only aquarium. A tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a pair or a small group (one male to two or three females); males are territorially competitive with one another, and a single male to multiple females minimises aggression. The aquarium should be tightly covered — like most killies, A. exigoideum is an accomplished jumper.
A heavily planted tank with a dark substrate and floating plants to diffuse surface light replicates the shaded forest stream environment and brings the fish into its best colour. Peat filtration or the addition of leaf litter (Indian almond leaves, oak leaves) acidifies the water gently and adds tannins that approximate the natural blackwater conditions. Target water conditions of 72–75 °F, pH 7.0 or slightly below, and very soft water (dH 1–2) match the recorded natural parameters closely and are easily achieved with rainwater or RO water blended with a small amount of tap water.
FishBase records the species as easy to maintain in aquaria. Its modest size, relatively peaceful temperament (within species-appropriate limits), and willingness to breed make it a rewarding choice for killifish enthusiasts. It should not be housed with larger or boisterous tankmates that may intimidate it or outcompete it for food.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion exigoideum as Least Concern (LC) in a 2009 evaluation by assessor T. Moelants. The assessment reflects the species' occurrence across coastal rainforest habitat in western Gabon and the absence at that time of evidence of rapid population decline meeting threat thresholds.
Nonetheless, the broader context for this species warrants attention. As a narrow-range endemic tied to the lowland rainforest streams and swamps of western Gabon's Atlantic coastal plain, A. exigoideum is intrinsically vulnerable to habitat loss. Gabon's coastal rainforests face pressure from logging, agricultural expansion, and oil-sector infrastructure. Small-bodied forest stream killies like this one are particularly sensitive to habitat degradation: siltation, altered hydrology, and the loss of forest canopy shade can rapidly degrade the cool, soft-water microhabitats on which they depend. The 2009 IUCN assessment is now well over a decade old and has not been updated, meaning the current status rests on data that may no longer fully reflect conditions on the ground. Continued monitoring of Gabonese coastal-plain forest killies remains important given ongoing pressures in the region.
