Haller's killifish is a small, jewel-coloured non-annual from the lowland rainforest streams and seeps of southern Cameroon and Gabon, first described from the Catholic Mission at Ambam in the South Region of Cameroon. A member of the species-rich cameronense complex within the subgenus Mesoaphyosemion, it inhabits cool, soft, acidic forest water and reproduces by depositing adhesive eggs on spawning mops and fine-leaved plants — a hallmark of the non-annual lifestyle shared by its close relatives. Hobbyists prize the group for their brilliant lateral patterning and their relative tractability in the aquarium compared to the annual killifish that require peat-moss diapause cycling.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion halleri was described by the Austrian killifish researchers Alfred C. Radda and Ernst Pürzl in 1976, in the paper 'Der Aphyosemion cameronense-Komplex' published in DKG Journal volume 8, number 11, pages 138–140. The type locality is the Catholic Mission in Ambam, a town in the South Region of Cameroon near the border with Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) treats the name as valid within the genus Aphyosemion Myers, 1924.

The species is placed in the subgenus Mesoaphyosemion Radda, 1977, a grouping of West and Central African non-annual killifish that includes approximately 26 recognised species. Within Mesoaphyosemion it belongs to the cameronense complex — a cluster of closely related species sharing broadly similar body plans and overlapping ranges in the rainforest belt of southern Cameroon, northern Gabon, and possibly Equatorial Guinea. Multiple collecting expeditions have been made to the region since the original 1975 survey, documenting the species at various localities in the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2018, with locality codes such as Ambam CSK 1995/21 and Kekaman JVC 2013/10 circulating among specialist hobbyists.

The family placement is Nothobranchiidae Garman, 1895, which encompasses the African killifish genera traditionally grouped under Aplocheilidae in older literature. The Killifische.info database records the subgenus as comprising 26 species; ongoing molecular work in the broader Aphyosemion genus continues to refine species limits and subgenus boundaries.

Morphology

Aphyosemion halleri is a slender, laterally compressed fish typical of the Mesoaphyosemion subgenus, reaching a maximum length in the range of 1.5–2 in total length, consistent with related species in the cameronense complex for which FishBase records typical Aphyosemion parameters of 2–2.5 in TL. The body is elongate and the snout rounded, with a somewhat upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding.

Males display the vivid, multi-coloured lateral patterning characteristic of the genus: a mosaic of red to brown spots and streaks overlying a blue-green to turquoise ground colour, with the unpaired fins elaborated into extensions or lyrate lobes in fully mature specimens. The precise colouration varies between collection localities, and hobbyists distinguish strains partly on these chromatic differences. Females are considerably plainer — olive to buff with reduced spotting and rounded, unelaborated fins — a degree of sexual dimorphism that is strong and immediately apparent.

The scales are cycloid and relatively large. The dorsal and anal fins are set well back on the body and are broadly opposite, a structural feature shared across Aphyosemion and related genera.

Habitat

The known range of Aphyosemion halleri centres on the South Region of Cameroon, with additional records from northern Gabon and a possible presence in Equatorial Guinea suggested by specimens collected during the GEMHS 00/22 expedition in 2000. The species inhabits lowland and submontane rainforest streams, seeps, and marginal pools associated with the Ntem River system and adjacent coastal drainages — watercourses characterised by dense riparian shade, deep leaf litter beds, and a persistent flow even through dry periods.

Water conditions in such habitats are consistently soft and acidic: low conductivity, pH typically in the range of 5.5–7.0, and moderate tannin staining from decomposing organic matter. Temperatures in the South Region forest zone are notably cool relative to lowland West Africa, and hobbyists report successful breeding in the aquarium at 68–73 °F — a range that reflects the highland influence on this part of Cameroon. Unlike the annual killifish of seasonally desiccating savanna pools, Aphyosemion halleri inhabits watercourses that retain water year-round, and the fish are correspondingly long-lived compared to annual species.

Feeding

In the wild, Aphyosemion halleri feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates available in forest stream habitats: aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, chironomid midges and their larvae, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface. The upturned mouth is adapted to taking prey at or near the water surface, though the fish will forage at mid-water and near the substrate as well.

In the aquarium the species accepts small live and frozen foods readily — Drosophila fruit flies, micro-worms, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm, Tubifex, and Cyclops are all suitable and widely used by specialist killifish keepers. Dry foods may be taken but should not form the bulk of the diet; a varied menu of live and frozen invertebrates supports colour development, conditioning for breeding, and general health. Feeding amounts should be modest and frequent rather than large and infrequent, as uneaten food in a small, densely planted killifish tank deteriorates water quality quickly.

Mating

Aphyosemion halleri is a non-annual killifish and a plant and mop spawner: unlike the annual killifish of ephemeral savanna pools, it does not bury its eggs in substrate and does not require a diapause period. Instead, pairs hover among fine-leaved plants, floating plant roots, or synthetic spawning mops and deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs over an extended period — typically several eggs per day across days or weeks rather than a single large clutch event.

Males court females with lateral displays, spreading and vibrating the elaborated unpaired fins to show off their colour patterning. Courtship is persistent and can be intense; females need to be in good condition and well-fed to accept repeated spawning activity without undue stress. The sex ratio in a breeding group is typically kept male-light — one male to two or more females — to distribute the male's attention. A hobbyist report from Belgium documents one reasonably productive breeding episode, reflecting that the species responds well to standard Aphyosemion mop-spawning technique once water parameters and conditioning are correct.

Breeding

Eggs are deposited adhesively on mop fibres or fine plant leaves and can be collected individually by hand-picking or by transferring the whole mop to a separate container. The eggs incubate in water — not in moist peat moss as with annual killifish — at the same cool temperature used for adults (68–73 °F). Incubation duration is typically two to four weeks depending on temperature; cooler water slows development and can reduce fungal pressure on eggs.

Fry hatch as fully formed miniatures, immediately free-swimming and capable of taking micro-foods. First foods are infusoria, micro-worms, or vinegar eels, graduating to Artemia nauplii within a week or two as the fry grow. Killi.co.uk breeding reports describe the species as of average difficulty for the subgenus — egg production can be sporadic, and some batches show poor fertility, but successful fry-raising has been achieved in small species tanks by hobbyists with moderate killifish experience. Growth is steady over several months before the fish reach sexual maturity at around 1–1.5 in.

Adults are generally not aggressive toward eggs or fry in a heavily planted or mop-furnished tank, but separating eggs is standard practice to maximise yield. The species is comparatively long-lived for a killifish, with a lifespan of two to three years or more under good aquarium conditions.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion halleri is best housed in a dedicated species tank or a quiet community restricted to non-competitive, similarly sized fish from comparable water conditions. A small aquarium of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a trio or small group; the tank should be densely planted with fine-leaved vegetation (Java moss, floating plants, hornwort, or similar) and furnished with dark substrate and driftwood to replicate the tannin-stained forest stream environment. A tight-fitting lid is essential — like most killifish, the species is an accomplished jumper.

Water conditions should replicate the cool, soft, acidic conditions of the Ambam forest zone: temperature 68–73 °F, pH 5.5–7.0, low hardness, with gentle filtration that does not create strong current. Partial water changes of 10–20% weekly maintain quality without disrupting the established water chemistry. The species is described as slightly timid and should not be housed with boisterous or fin-nipping tankmates; if any community setting is attempted at all, only the calmest small fish are appropriate partners.

The cool temperature requirement is a practical constraint for aquarists in warm climates, who may need to cool the tank rather than heat it during summer months. Given the limited distribution of the species in the wild and the relatively small number of hobbyists maintaining it, preserving captive strains with documented collection codes (such as Ambam CSK 1995/21 and Kekaman JVC 2013/10) contributes to genetic conservation and ensures that the hobby holds material should wild populations come under pressure.

Conservation

Aphyosemion halleri has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). No formal population survey or conservation assessment appears to have been published for this species. It is endemic to a limited range in the Congo Basin-adjacent rainforest of southern Cameroon and northern Gabon — a region where primary forest cover, while still substantial in parts, faces ongoing pressure from logging concessions, agricultural expansion (particularly oil palm), and road construction that fragments and degrades riparian corridors.

The species' association with permanent, shaded forest streams makes it dependent on intact canopy cover for the cool temperatures and soft-water chemistry it requires. Forest clearance raises stream temperatures, increases sedimentation, and shifts water chemistry toward harder and more alkaline conditions — all of which are unfavourable to a specialist like Aphyosemion halleri. The Ambam area, where the type specimens were collected, is accessible and has been visited by multiple collecting expeditions, suggesting that at least some populations persist, but the status of more remote Gabon populations is poorly documented.

Hobbyist maintenance of genetically distinct, locality-coded strains is a meaningful adjunct to in situ conservation for range-restricted forest killifish. The Killifish Collections Project and German killifish society (DKG) networks that maintain records of collection codes such as Ambam CSK 1995/21 play a role in preserving the diversity of this group alongside the primary-description literature.
