Aphyosemion hofmanni is a small, non-annual killifish from the highland drainage streams of southern Gabon, where it inhabits cool, soft, and acidic forest brooks of the Mbomi system. Described by Austrian aquarist-taxonomist Alfred Radda in 1980, it is known from at least 14 collection localities centred on the Mbomi drainage and surrounding areas including Mbigou and the Myanga/Miemba river system. A genuine plant-spawner that deposits adhesive eggs on moss and fine-leaved vegetation over extended periods, it is rated difficult in captivity — demanding cool, very soft water that most aquarists struggle to sustain — but it repays effort with the subtle brilliance typical of the Aphyosemion genus.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion hofmanni was described by Alfred C. Radda in 1980, with a type locality given as a small mountainous brook in the Mbomi drainage system of southern Gabon. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Aphyosemion hofmanni Radda, 1980. A misspelling — hofmani, with a single 'n' — appears in the older literature and circulates in the hobby, but the correctly spelled hofmanni is the senior synonym and the accepted valid form.

The species is placed in the genus Aphyosemion, a large and taxonomically complex group of West and Central African killifishes (family Nothobranchiidae) characterised by vivid colouration, a preference for soft forest waters, and non-annual reproductive biology. Within the genus, A. hofmanni belongs to the broadly defined Aphyosemion group, a lineage of perennial-stream killifishes sharing the plant-spawning reproductive mode rather than the diapausing egg strategy of the annual genera.

The American Killifish Association's records indicate nine articles in the journal JAKA spanning 1983 to 2020, attesting to sustained hobbyist and scientific interest in the species across four decades.

Morphology

Males reach approximately 2 in total length (FishBase); females are noticeably smaller, typically around 1.5 in standard length, and considerably plainer in colour. The body form is typical of the genus: slender, slightly compressed, with a subterminal mouth, a rounded caudal fin, and relatively large scales for a fish of this size.

Males are vividly coloured in the manner typical of Aphyosemion — the precise pattern of red, blue, and orange pigmentation on the body and fins places the species within the West-Central African assemblage that uses colour for mate choice and male-male signalling. Females are cryptically brownish with little patterning, a dimorphism that is immediately apparent in mixed-sex groups.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced: beyond size and colour, males develop more elaborate, longer-rayed unpaired fins as they mature. This is a consistent feature of the group and makes sexing straightforward once fish are adult.

Habitat

In the wild, A. hofmanni is known exclusively from the Mbomi drainage system and associated highland streams of southern Gabon, with the American Killifish Association recording confirmed localities at Takamoumdjikou, Baposso, Imeno, Imeno-Mbila, Mbigou, Mbono, Munalzamb-Mageni, and the Myanga/Miemba river system — all within Gabon at high confidence.

The type locality is described as a small mountainous brook, consistent with a highland or submontane forest-stream environment. FishBase records the habitat as benthopelagic in these small brooks, and the temperature records from the hobby (61–72 °F across sources) confirm that these are cool, shaded upland waters rather than the warmer lowland forest streams more typical of low-elevation Aphyosemion species.

Water chemistry is very soft and acidic: hobbyist reports via Killi.co.uk indicate 100 % of keeper records fall in the very soft, acidic category. The tannin-stained, leaf-littered forest streams typical of the Gabonese interior provide the dim, chemically stable conditions to which this species is adapted.

Feeding

Like the rest of its genus, A. hofmanni is a carnivore subsisting on small invertebrates in the wild. In the forest streams it inhabits, the diet likely comprises zooplankton, aquatic insect larvae, and small surface invertebrates that fall into the brook — the standard prey spectrum for a small predator in an oligotrophic highland forest stream.

In captivity, live and frozen small invertebrates are strongly preferred. Killi.co.uk hobbyist reports identify cyclops (copepods) as the best staple feeding item, with artemia nauplii offered occasionally as a supplemental food. Live food appears important for maintaining breeding condition and overall vitality. Dry and pelleted foods may be accepted by acclimated specimens but should not be the dietary mainstay.

Mating

Aphyosemion hofmanni is a non-annual killifish: it inhabits permanent highland streams and reproduces as a plant-spawner, placing adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation, Java moss, or spawning mops over an extended period rather than burying eggs in substrate to diapause through a dry season. This mode is entirely different from the annual peat-spawning strategy of genera such as Nothobranchius or Austrolebias, and the two should not be confused.

In the aquarium, pairs or trios engage in extended spawning over days and weeks, with the male displaying his colour to the female and driving her toward vegetation or a moss clump. Mating embraces are brief, depositing one or a few eggs at a time attached to plant material. The male's vivid colouration and expanded finnage function as honest signals of condition during these repeated courtship bouts.

Killi.co.uk records note that hobbyists observing their tanks may notice fry appearing among adults — a hallmark of the long-term mop/moss spawner, where eggs deposited earlier hatch into fry that grow alongside the spawning adults in the same vessel.

Breeding

Eggs are described as large for a fish of this size and are easily handled — a practical advantage for breeders separating eggs by hand from mops or moss clumps. Incubation takes place in water without diapause; eggs are transferred to a rearing container with soft, slightly acidic water and incubate for approximately two to three weeks at the cool temperatures this species prefers (61–66 °F).

Because A. hofmanni is rated 'Difficult' by hobbyist consensus, successful breeding demands close attention to water quality and temperature. The very soft, acidic conditions required — harder to maintain than neutral tapwater — are the primary hurdle; fish kept in water that is too hard or too warm will not come into full breeding condition and reproductive success drops sharply.

Two recorded hobbyist strains are documented: GBG 93-17 and GJS 00-6, both locality codes from Gabon collections, following the standard killifish strain-coding convention that records the collector's initials and the year of collection. Maintaining strain identity by recording collection codes is strongly encouraged in the killifish hobby to preserve the genetic distinctness of population-level variants.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion hofmanni is best suited to the specialist killifish keeper rather than the general community aquarist. Its temperature and water-chemistry demands — very soft, acidic water at 61–72 °F — place it at the cooler and softer end of the Aphyosemion spectrum, and maintaining these conditions over the long term requires either a naturally cool, soft water supply or deliberate RO/rainwater blending with active temperature management.

A species tank or a paired setup in a small, well-planted aquarium with a dark substrate and subdued lighting suits these fish well. Java moss is both a useful spawning medium and a habitat feature that makes the fish more comfortable. Tankmates should be chosen carefully: other small, cool-water species with compatible chemistry requirements are acceptable, but A. hofmanni males may quarrel among themselves, and the tank should not be overcrowded.

Because long-term mop-spawning produces fry continuously in the same vessel, a regular check of moss or mop material will turn up eggs that can be removed to a separate rearing container, keeping fry safe from inadvertent predation by adults. The species' 'Difficult' rating in hobbyist surveys reflects the water-parameter challenge rather than any aggression or feeding difficulty — fish that receive correct conditions are rewarding and relatively straightforward once established.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Aphyosemion hofmanni as Least Concern (LC), with the assessment completed by T. Moelants in 2010 (listed in the 2025-2 update of the Red List). The species is known from at least 14 confirmed collection localities within Gabon's Mbomi drainage and surrounding highland streams, suggesting a range adequate to avoid the most acute single-locality extinction risk.

Nevertheless, Gabon's southern highland forests are not immune to the deforestation and land-use change affecting equatorial Africa more broadly. Small mountainous brooks are sensitive to sedimentation, shade loss, and flow alteration that follows forest clearance. The cool, very soft, acidic water chemistry of A. hofmanni's habitat is itself a product of intact forest cover and deep organic litter; degraded catchments produce warmer, more chemically variable streams that may no longer support this species.

The maintenance of correctly labelled captive strains — particularly the documented GBG 93-17 and GJS 00-6 collection codes — contributes to the preservation of genetic diversity from specific localities and provides an insurance population outside the wild, a role the killifish hobby has played for numerous threatened Aphyosemion species.
