Aphyosemion lefiniense is a small, non-annual killifish from a single isolated pool beside a fast-flowing tributary of the Lefini River in the Republic of Congo, roughly 200 kilometres north of Brazzaville. Known only from its type locality — a shallow, leaf-littered hollow no more than 15 centimetres deep and 1.5 square metres in area, lying immediately beside a much deeper fast stream — this fish has one of the most constrained natural ranges of any aquarium killifish and earns its Data Deficient status from the IUCN accordingly. In the hobby it has a reputation as one of the more demanding members of the elegans group, requiring stable, soft, slightly acidic water and patient husbandry, but it rewards specialists with a long-lived, permanently aquatic plant-spawner whose biology ties it intimately to the fragile rainforest-edge drainage of the middle Congo basin.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion lefiniense was described by Woeltjes in 1984, with the type locality recorded as a small pool alongside a fast-flowing brook that drains to the Lefini River in the Republic of Congo — a tributary of the middle Congo basin. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats it as a valid species in the genus Aphyosemion, placed within the subgenus Aphyosemion and conventionally assigned to the elegans species group, a cluster of West and Central African killifishes sharing broadly similar coloration patterns and ecology.

Synonyms recorded in the American Killifish Association literature include references to A. cognatum and A. schioetzi lefiniense, reflecting historical uncertainty about the boundaries between closely related elegans-group taxa. The elegans group as a whole has been subject to considerable taxonomic revision as molecular data have clarified relationships among morphologically similar species, and the limits of A. lefiniense — including whether some populations sometimes associated with the name represent distinct lineages — remain an open question pending a comprehensive revisionary study.

The genus name Aphyosemion derives from the Greek aphye (a small fish, literally 'sardine' or 'anchovy' by ancient usage) and semeion (mark or signal), alluding to the colourful patterning that characterises many members of the genus. The specific epithet lefiniense is a Latinised toponym for the Lefini River, the drainage to which the type population belongs.

Morphology

Aphyosemion lefiniense is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum reported total length of approximately 2 in. Like other elegans-group Aphyosemion it displays pronounced sexual dichromatism: males carry the vivid, complex coloration typical of the group — a patterning of spots, bands, or reticulations in combinations of red, blue, orange, and brown overlaid on a light ground colour, with fin extensions or colour accents varying among the populations associated with the name. Females are considerably plainer, showing a brownish or olive background colouration with minimal markings, the typical cryptic coloration of a fish that must remain inconspicuous while tending eggs in vegetation.

The body form is typical for non-annual Aphyosemion: more elongate and less deep-bodied than many of the annual species, with a rounded caudal fin rather than the pointed or lyrate tail common in longer-lived, open-habitat forms. The mouth is small and terminal, well suited to picking invertebrates from the water surface and from plant matter. Scale counts and meristic data were documented in the original 1984 description and in subsequent AKA literature, but exact counts are not reproduced here as the detailed meristic sources are not independently verifiable from the cache.

Habitat

The type locality of A. lefiniense is among the most precisely documented of any killifish: a shallow temporary-appearing pool, approximately 6 in deep and 1.5 square metres in surface area, lying directly beside a fast-flowing stream roughly 2 metres deep — a tributary of the Lefini River in the Republic of Congo, situated about 200 kilometres north of Brazzaville in the middle Congo basin. The pool itself was leaf-littered, still, and almost certainly heavily shaded by overhanging forest vegetation. FishBase records the water as freshwater with a pH of 6.0–6.5 and a temperature range of 72–79 °F.

This type of microhabitat — a shallow, sheltered backwater or seepage pool beside a faster stream, receiving leaf litter and organic inputs from forest soil, tannin-stained and soft — is characteristic of non-annual Aphyosemion across Central and West Africa. Because the pool exists alongside a permanent deep stream rather than being an isolated seasonal pan, the water body itself persists through at least most of the year, and the species is considered non-annual: it does not rely on diapausing buried eggs to survive a dry season. Whether the extremely small known range reflects genuine distributional restriction or simply insufficient survey effort in this part of the Congo basin is unclear. The AKA literature mentions multiple populations — including a Brazzaville aquarium strain, the Lefini type population, and a Maluke/Zaire variant — suggesting that related fish may be more broadly distributed than the type locality alone implies.

Feeding

In the wild, A. lefiniense almost certainly feeds on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — micro-crustaceans, insect larvae, small worms, and surface-fallen insects — consistent with the dietary pattern documented across non-annual Aphyosemion. The shallow, leaf-littered pool habitat is rich in the micro-fauna that sustains small killies: chironomid larvae, ostracods, copepods, and similar organisms colonise leaf-pack accumulations and the fine organics of a forest pool bottom.

In aquarium care the species accepts a range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods. Drosophila (fruit flies), small bloodworm, Artemia nauplii, micro-worm, and similar live or frozen foods are well received; dried foods may be accepted after conditioning. Given its reputation as one of the more demanding elegans-group species, keeping food small, varied, and live or recently frozen is advisable to maintain condition and stimulate spawning.

Mating

Aphyosemion lefiniense is a non-annual plant-spawner, and its mating behaviour follows the pattern established for permanently aquatic Aphyosemion: pairs or a male with multiple females engage in brief spawning drives close to fine-leaved plants, moss, or floating spawning mops, where the female deposits individual adhesive eggs at intervals over days or weeks. There is no bubble nest, no substrate digging, and no parental guarding — the eggs are placed in vegetation and left to incubate in water, with no diapause phase.

Male coloration intensifies during courtship, and males will display with spread fins and lateral posturing to both rivals and potential mates. In a colony or species-specific setup, the intensity of male display can be used as an index of condition and readiness to spawn. Because elegans-group males may pester females persistently, providing dense plant cover or a second female allows less dominant individuals to rest.

Breeding

The AKA literature records that eggs incubate in water for approximately 12–14 days at typical aquarium temperatures before hatching, and that young fish reach sexual maturity at around 7 months — a timeline consistent with a non-annual species of modest longevity. Eggs are adhesive and are deposited individually on fine-leaved plants or synthetic spawning mops positioned near the surface or mid-water. Breeders commonly remove the mop every one to two weeks, pick the eggs, and incubate them separately in a small container with a light anti-fungal treatment (methylene blue at low concentration is widely used) to improve hatch rates.

Fry are small at hatching but can typically take Artemia nauplii immediately or within a few days, making initial feeding less challenging than with some of the smallest killifish genera. Water quality is important throughout: the soft, slightly acidic conditions of the type locality (pH 6.0–6.5, 72–79 °F) should be replicated in the rearing vessel as well as the breeding tank. The species is considered one of the more demanding Aphyosemion to keep and breed successfully — a reputation that likely reflects its sensitivity to sub-optimal water chemistry rather than any unusual difficulty in the spawning act itself.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion lefiniense is a specialist fish for experienced killifish keepers rather than a general aquarium species. Its requirements for soft, slightly acidic, well-oxygenated water at a moderate temperature (72–79 °F, pH 6.0–6.5) need to be met consistently; hard or alkaline tap water without conditioning will result in poor condition and failure to reproduce. FishBase notes explicitly that it is difficult to maintain in the aquarium, a caution that should be taken seriously.

A dedicated small species tank — a well-planted 10–15 US gal aquarium with a dark substrate, floating plants, tannin-stained water from peat filtration or Indian almond leaves, and a tight-fitting lid — provides appropriate conditions. The species is peaceful and should not be kept with larger or boisterous tankmates. A small colony of one male to two or three females, or a breeding pair in a smaller vessel, works well. Because multiple populations are in circulation (Lefini type, Brazzaville strain, Maluke variant), hobbyists should maintain population provenance records to avoid unintentional hybridisation of distinct lineages — a standard discipline in the killifish hobby that takes on added importance given the species' restricted and poorly surveyed natural range.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List places Aphyosemion lefiniense in the Data Deficient (DD) category, with the assessment conducted by Moelants in 2010. This status reflects a genuine lack of data about the species' distribution, population size, and population trends — not a determination that the species is secure. The type locality, a pool of only 1.5 square metres beside a Lefini River tributary in the Republic of Congo, suggests an extreme natural rarity, though it remains possible that related populations discovered in aquarium trade channels (the Brazzaville strain, the Maluke variant) represent a somewhat broader natural range.

The threats facing small-pool killifish in Central African forest-edge drainages are well established: deforestation and the associated siltation and runoff that converts leaf-littered forest pools into degraded open-water habitats; alteration of hydrological flow patterns by logging or agriculture that can eliminate the very small, sheltered microhabitats these fish depend on; and the introduction of invasive mosquitofish or other alien species that prey on or compete with small native killifishes. Without targeted surveys of the Lefini basin and adjacent drainages, it is impossible to determine whether A. lefiniense persists at its type locality or has been extirpated. The species' continued presence in the specialist killifish hobby represents both a conservation resource and an argument for investment in field surveys of the middle Congo basin's understudied small-water fish fauna.
