Aphyosemion lugens is a small, non-annual killifish from the rainforest streams of southern Cameroon, first described by Hans Radda in 1975 from collections made near Ebolowa. Like other members of the large and variable genus Aphyosemion, it is a plant spawner that deposits adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation and spawning mops in permanent or near-permanent waters — far removed from the soil-burying annual killies of the savannas. Males display the richly patterned, polychromatic colouration typical of the group; the specific epithet lugens, Latin for 'mourning' or 'dark', is thought to reference a particularly sombre quality in the colour pattern relative to closely related species. It is a specialist's fish — sought in European and North American killifish clubs for its small footprint, tractable temperament, and quiet beauty — but seldom seen in the mainstream ornamental trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion lugens was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Hans Joachim Radda in 1975 in his paper on new dwarf cichlids and toothcarps, published in Aquarien- und Terrarien-Zeitschrift. The type locality is the Ebolowa region of southern Cameroon. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the name as valid, placing it within the large and taxonomically complex genus Aphyosemion.

Aphyosemion, established by Myers in 1924, contains dozens of species of small, colourful, non-annual killifish distributed across West and Central Africa. The genus has historically been divided informally into species groups based on geography and colour pattern, and molecular phylogenetics has reinforced many of these groupings while also revealing that the genus as currently delimited may not be strictly monophyletic. The placement of A. lugens within a species-group framework requires fresh molecular work; it is closely associated with other south Cameroonian Aphyosemion by both geography and morphology.

The family Nothobranchiidae — which encompasses Aphyosemion and the majority of African killifishes — was formerly included in a broadly drawn Cyprinodontidae, and older literature may refer to the species under that family name. The current family-level assignment follows the consensus treatment in Eschmeyer and on FishBase.

Morphology

Aphyosemion lugens is a small, slender-bodied killifish with the general body plan characteristic of the genus: a somewhat laterally compressed, elongated trunk, an upturned mouth adapted for surface and near-surface feeding, and rounded to slightly pointed unpaired fins. Based on typical Aphyosemion dimensions, total length in males is likely in the range of 1–1.5 in; females are somewhat smaller and markedly plainer in colour — standard killifish sexual dimorphism.

Males carry the polychromatic colour pattern typical of West and Central African Aphyosemion: a base body colour overlaid with spots, bars, or streaks of red, orange, blue, green, or combinations thereof, with the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins elaborately patterned and often edged with contrasting colours. The specific epithet lugens ('mourning') suggests that the male colour pattern is comparatively subdued within its immediate species assemblage, perhaps with a greater proportion of dark ground colouration or less vivid fin extension than congeners from the same region. Females are typically a uniform olive or brownish-beige with minimal patterning.

Habitat

Aphyosemion lugens inhabits rainforest streams, pools, and marginal vegetation zones in the Ebolowa region of southern Cameroon, an area lying within the Congo–Atlantic forest belt characterised by year-round rainfall and dense riparian cover. These habitats typically feature soft, acidic, tannin-stained water with very low mineral content, low conductivity, and a deep leaf-litter substrate. Water temperatures in shaded forest streams are moderate and relatively stable year-round, falling in the range of 68–75 °F.

Unlike the annual killifish of seasonal savanna pools, A. lugens occupies permanent or near-permanent water bodies where fish can persist through the entire year without reliance on a diapausing egg stage in soil. This reproductive ecology reflects the ecological stability of the closed-canopy forest environment: the fish never need to 'abandon' the water body, and there is no dry-season selective pressure driving the evolution of embryonic diapause. The species likely shares its habitat with other Aphyosemion congeners and a range of small cyprinids, characids, and other killies typical of Cameroonian lowland forest streams.

Feeding

Like other members of the genus, Aphyosemion lugens is primarily an insectivore and micro-predator in the wild. Small invertebrates — aquatic and terrestrial insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans, zooplankton, and worms — form the bulk of the diet. The upward-oriented mouth is adapted for capturing prey at or just below the water surface, where insects that have fallen from overhanging vegetation are concentrated.

In captivity the species is straightforward to feed. Live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, cyclops, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and tubifex are accepted readily and produce the best condition and colour in males. High-quality micro-pellets and freeze-dried foods can supplement the diet but should not replace live or frozen items entirely. Feeding small amounts two to three times daily is preferable to a single large meal, which can foul the water of the small, lightly filtered aquaria that killifish keepers typically use.

Mating

Aphyosemion lugens is a non-annual killifish whose reproductive mode is plant or mop spawning — the pair deposits individual adhesive eggs among fine-leaved plants, roots, or fibrous spawning mops near the water surface or amid the substrate over extended periods, without any phase of desiccation, soil burial, or embryonic diapause. This distinguishes it fundamentally from the annual killifish whose eggs must survive a dry season buried in dried mud.

Mating behaviour follows the typical Aphyosemion pattern: the male courts the female with lateral displays, colour intensification, and fin spreading. When the female is receptive, the pair moves side by side into fine vegetation or a mop and spawn in a brief embrace, depositing a single egg — or at most a few eggs — per embrace. The process is repeated intermittently over many days or weeks. Males are often aggressive toward one another and persistent in their courtship; keeping one male with one or two females is the recommended approach for productive spawning.

Breeding

Spawning in captivity is accomplished by conditioning adults on live and frozen foods and providing a spawning mop of fine-leaved plants (Java moss, Ceratophyllum) or synthetic wool mops. Eggs are laid singly and adhere to the mop fibres; they can be collected by removing the mop and incubating eggs either in shallow containers of soft, slightly acidic water at around 72–73 °F, or by leaving the mop in a separate tank with no adults. Eggs hatch in approximately 10–14 days at typical incubation temperatures — there is no diapause, no dry period, and no need for peat storage.

Fry are tiny at hatching but free-swimming almost immediately and capable of taking the smallest live foods. Newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worms are the standard first foods; infusoria or commercial fry powder can bridge the first day or two if nauplii are not immediately available. Fry grow quickly in clean, warm water and can reach sexual maturity within a few months. Because adults may consume eggs if not removed, dedicated mop-breeding tanks or regular mop inspection and egg collection are standard practice among killifish keepers.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion lugens is well suited to small, well-planted aquaria in the 20–40-litre range — the typical killifish setup. Water should be soft (under 5 dGH), slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0–7.0), and kept at 72–75 °F; the species is intolerant of warm, oxygen-depleted conditions that tropical community-tank temperatures might produce. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter is ideal — and the tank should have a tight-fitting lid, as killies are accomplished jumpers.

Dark substrate, floating plants, and subdued lighting display the male's colour to best effect and reduce the stress of open, brightly lit conditions. The species can be maintained as a pair or a small trio (one male, two females); multiple males in a small tank will quarrel. It is not a community fish in the conventional sense — its small size, cool-water preference, and delicate temperament make it incompatible with most tropical community species, and it is most rewarding when kept species-only or with other small, similarly-conditioned Aphyosemion.

After several decades in the European and North American killifish hobby, A. lugens is maintained in specialist collections and traded through killifish association auctions and swaps. Wild-caught individuals are rarely if ever available commercially; hobbyist-bred stock is the typical source. Keepers interested in the species should contact national killifish associations (the American Killifish Association, Killi-Data, or European equivalents) for access to stock.

Conservation

Aphyosemion lugens has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is a common situation among the many small, range-restricted Aphyosemion species of the Congo–Atlantic forest: the taxonomy of the genus is still being resolved, many species were described from single localities, and the resources for systematic assessment of hundreds of microendemic killies have not been available to the IUCN Freshwater Fish Specialist Group.

The Ebolowa region of southern Cameroon where the species was described lies within the Cameroonian Highlands and Guinea-Congolian rainforest transition, an area under documented pressure from expanding agriculture, logging concessions, and road construction that fragments and degrades the stream habitats on which forest killies depend. Species with small natural ranges and precise microhabitat requirements — soft, acidic, shaded forest streams — are inherently vulnerable to catchment disturbance even if their populations have not been formally monitored. The maintenance of captive-bred populations in the killifish hobby provides a buffer against local extirpation, but there are no confirmed ex-situ conservation programs for this species.
