Aphyosemion mimbon is a small, non-annual killifish endemic to the rainforested hill streams of northwestern Gabon and the adjacent border region of southeastern Equatorial Guinea. Described by Huber in 1977 from a small running brook near Akoga village in Gabon, it belongs to the subgenus Mesoaphyosemion and inhabits cool, permanent freshwater in the upper drainages of rivers including the Mbei, Komo, Abanga, and Nkam. A plant-spawning species with a preference for cooler water at the lower end of the tropical range, it is rated Least Concern by the IUCN but is seldom seen in the aquarium trade and is considered difficult to maintain.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion mimbon was described by Joerg-Volker Huber in 1977, with the type locality given as a small running brook near the village of Akoga, approximately 34 mi from Médouneu, in Gabon. The species is placed within the subgenus Mesoaphyosemion, a grouping within the large and diverse genus Aphyosemion that spans the West and Central African rainforest zone. The Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Aphyosemion mimbon Huber, 1977 as the valid name. The IUCN assessment (Moelants, 2009) notes the species' Lower Guinea biogeographic affinity, placing it among the killifishes of the Atlantic-slope drainages of Central Africa.

The genus name Aphyosemion derives from the Greek aphyē (small fish) and sēmeion (flag or sign), alluding to the elaborately marked, flag-like finnage of males in many species of the genus. The specific epithet mimbon has not been etymologically explained in the accessible literature, but likely references a toponym or locality name from the type-collection area in northwestern Gabon. The subgenus Mesoaphyosemion encompasses non-annual species from humid West and Central African forests that spawn on fine-leaved plants or spawning mops rather than burying eggs in substrate.

Morphology

Aphyosemion mimbon is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum of 2 in total length in males (FishBase). Like other members of Mesoaphyosemion, males display more vivid colouration than females, a pattern common across Aphyosemion. The body form is typical for the genus: elongate with a pointed snout, upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, and rounded to slightly pointed fins. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced, with males bearing richer pigmentation patterns on the flanks and fins.

Detailed colour descriptions specific to A. mimbon are sparse in the accessible literature, reflecting the species' rarity in the hobby and the limited number of published ichthyological redescriptions since Huber's original 1977 account. As with related species of the subgenus, males likely bear a ground colour overlain with red or blue spots or streaks on the flanks, and the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins probably display marginal colour bands. Females are considerably plainer, with a brownish or olivaceous body and reduced fin colouration.

Habitat

Aphyosemion mimbon occurs in the upper reaches of several rivers draining the highlands of northwestern Gabon: the IUCN assessment lists the upper Mbei (also written Mbe), upper Komo, upper Abanga, and upper Nkam River systems, as well as adjacent areas of southeastern Equatorial Guinea. This is Lower Guinea rainforest terrain — hilly, densely forested, and characterised by fast-flowing, clear to lightly stained brooks and small streams running over rocky or sandy substrates.

FishBase describes the habitat as brooks and small streams in hilly rainforest. The species is benthopelagic and non-migratory, occupying permanent watercourses rather than seasonal pools — a defining feature of its non-annual life history. Water in these highland streams is characteristically soft and acidic, cooled by shade and elevation. FishBase records a tropical temperature range of 64–72 °F for this species, meaningfully cooler than many lowland West African killies, and Amazonas Magazine notes a preference for the lower end of this thermal range in captivity.

Feeding

Like virtually all Aphyosemion, A. mimbon is a microcarnivore in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates available at the water surface and in the water column: midges, mosquito larvae, small aquatic insects, zooplankton, and similar prey. The upturned mouth is adapted for taking food from or near the surface film, a feeding strategy shared across the genus.

In the aquarium, the species can be offered a diet of live or frozen Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and other small invertebrate foods. Variety is important for long-term condition. Dried commercial foods may be accepted if the fish are first established on live or frozen items. Because A. mimbon is recorded as difficult to keep, attention to feed quality and feeding frequency is part of maintaining the fish in good health.

Mating

Aphyosemion mimbon is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. Unlike the annual species that bury their eggs in drying substrate and rely on diapause to survive seasonal dessication, A. mimbon inhabits permanent streams and spawns by depositing adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, moss, roots, or the fibres of a spawning mop, singly or in small numbers over an extended period. There is no egg dormancy; incubation proceeds in water.

Courting males display to females with spread fins, showing their full colour pattern. Spawning is a brief embrace during which a single egg is fertilised and adheres to the chosen plant or substrate. The pair repeats this over days or weeks rather than releasing a large clutch simultaneously — a reproductive rhythm suited to the relatively stable, permanent-water environment. Females can store sperm and continue producing eggs without constant male presence.

Breeding

In the aquarium, A. mimbon can be spawned on fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or on commercial nylon spawning mops placed near the surface or on the substrate. A small, densely planted or well-decorated breeding tank with soft, slightly acidic, cool water (64–70 °F, matching the natural range) is the appropriate setup. The water should be very clean and well-oxygenated, reflecting the clear upland stream habitat.

Eggs are picked from the mop or plant and incubated in a separate container of shallow, slightly acidic water at the same temperature, or the mop can be left in place and fry removed once hatched. Incubation at these cool temperatures takes longer than for tropical lowland species — typically two to three weeks. Fry are small at hatching and require appropriately sized first foods such as infusoria or commercial micro-fry food before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. FishBase notes the species is very difficult to maintain in the aquarium, and breeding success demands careful attention to water quality and thermal stability.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion mimbon is rarely encountered in the trade and is essentially a specialist's fish, of interest primarily to killifish enthusiasts and collectors of West African miniature species. FishBase specifically flags the species as very difficult to maintain in captivity. The core challenge is replicating the cool, clean, well-oxygenated conditions of its highland stream habitat: most tropical aquaria run at temperatures that are too warm for this species, and it does not tolerate the fouled or warm water that more robust killies can handle.

A small, dedicated aquarium (10–15 US gal) with a tight-fitting lid (killifish are accomplished jumpers), gentle filtration, heavy planting with fine-leaved plants, and a reliable means of maintaining water at 64–72 °F is the appropriate setup. The water should be soft and slightly acidic. A species tank or a pairing with similarly sized, non-competitive tankmates that share the cool-water requirement is preferable to a mixed community. Males can be aggressive toward one another; a ratio of one male to one or two females is advisable. Amazonas Magazine highlights the species' preference for cooler conditions as the key to husbandry success.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion mimbon as Least Concern (LC) in an evaluation published in 2010 and based on a 2009 assessment by T. Moelants. The assessors noted that the species has no known specific threats and that its population trend is unknown. Its range encompasses the upper watersheds of several Gabonese rivers — the Mbei, Komo, Abanga, and Nkam — and extends into southeastern Equatorial Guinea, a region of largely intact equatorial rainforest with comparatively low human population density.

Despite the current LC status, the 2009 IUCN annotation notes that the assessment needs updating, and the broader context of West and Central African freshwater habitats warrants caution. Deforestation for timber, mining, and agricultural expansion in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea poses a long-term risk to the cool, shaded hill streams that A. mimbon depends upon. The species' reliance on permanent, cool upland water makes it potentially sensitive to both land-use change and climate warming. Its rarity in collections means that population size and trends in the wild remain poorly documented.
