Aphyosemion ocellatum is a small, non-annual killifish from the upper Ngounié drainage of southwestern Gabon and adjacent western Congo, where it inhabits cool, shaded brooks and minor streams threading through lowland rainforest. Unlike the annual soil-spawners that define killifish in the popular imagination, it lives in permanent water and deposits adhesive eggs on fine plant leaves and roots — a plant-spawning lifestyle tied to the perpetually running streams of the Gabonese interior. The species is little traded and considered demanding in the aquarium; it is documented as Least Concern by the IUCN but remains a specialist's fish, confined to a limited geographic range in a biologically rich but increasingly pressured forest zone.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion ocellatum was described by Albert Carl Radda and Jean-Henri Huber in 1977. It belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae, the African killifishes, within the large and species-rich genus Aphyosemion — a group of small, often brilliantly coloured fish distributed across the rainforest drainages of West and Central Africa. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Aphyosemion ocellatum Radda & Huber, 1977 as the valid name.

The genus Aphyosemion has historically been a taxonomic catch-all, and several subgeneric and subgroup classifications have been proposed over the decades to organise its roughly 100 recognised species. Aphyosemion ocellatum has been variously grouped within different species aggregates as systematic revisions have progressed, but its placement within the genus is not disputed. FishBase records the family as Nothobranchiidae, consistent with the modern treatment that separates the African lyretails and their relatives from the New World killifishes of the Rivulidae.

Morphology

Aphyosemion ocellatum is a slender-bodied killifish reaching a maximum total length of 2.5 in (FishBase), making it a small species even within a genus composed largely of small fish. The body profile is typical of the genus: slightly laterally compressed, with a somewhat flattened dorsal surface, a subterminal upward-angled mouth adapted for surface feeding, and relatively large eyes. The specific epithet ocellatum — Latin for 'bearing eye-spots' — refers to the ocellate markings that characterise the colouration, though the detailed colour pattern of males in full condition includes the vivid reds, blues, and spotted or banded elements typical of Aphyosemion species from this region.

Sexual dimorphism follows the pattern seen across the genus. Males display the full chromatic development — extended, often lyre-shaped or pointed caudal and unpaired fins, and the species' characteristic ocellate spotting. Females are drabber: smaller-finned, often brownish or olive, with reduced or absent colour patterning. This disparity between the sexes is conspicuous and allows straightforward identification of sex in mature individuals, which is necessary for structured breeding.

Habitat

The species is recorded from brooks and small streams in rainforest on inland plains and hilly terrain within the upper Ngounié drainage of southwestern Gabon and nearby parts of western Congo (FishBase). This is a zone of dense equatorial forest where small watercourses run clear and relatively cool, shaded by the forest canopy. FishBase records a temperature range of 64–72 °F, cooler than many tropical aquarium species and reflecting the altitude and shade of the inland Gabonese terrain.

The streams A. ocellatum inhabits are characterised by low flow in sections, moderate leaf litter accumulation, soft and often slightly acidic water stained by humic compounds from decomposing vegetation, and abundant fine-leaved aquatic and marginal plant growth. These conditions are typical of the permanent, non-seasonal stream habitats occupied by plant-spawning Aphyosemion species throughout the West African forest zone. The fish is not associated with temporary pools or seasonally drying habitats — its entire reproductive strategy depends on continuously flowing or standing permanent water.

Feeding

Like virtually all Aphyosemion species, A. ocellatum is a micro-predator in the wild, feeding on small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates that fall or drift onto the water surface or occur near the streambed. Chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, mosquito larvae, springtails, and other small arthropods constitute the likely diet in the field — the upward-angled mouth and surface-oriented posture characteristic of the genus point toward surface and mid-water predation on small prey.

In the aquarium, the species accepts live and frozen small invertebrates readily: Drosophila fruit flies, mosquito larvae, Artemia nauplii and adults, small Daphnia, chironomid larvae, and similar items are appropriate. Dry prepared foods may be accepted by some individuals but should not form the staple diet; the fish are best maintained on varied live or frozen material to support condition and encourage natural colouration.

Mating

Aphyosemion ocellatum is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. The pair spawns repeatedly over days or weeks rather than in a single concentrated event, depositing individual adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, roots, spawning mops, or other suitable surfaces near the water surface or at substrate level. There is no diapause; eggs are not buried in peat and do not require a dry period to complete development. This mode places A. ocellatum among the majority of Aphyosemion species, which are plant-spawners associated with permanent stream habitats — a fundamental contrast to the annual killifishes of temporary ponds.

Male courtship involves lateral displays and fin-spreading to present the full colour pattern to the female, followed by a side-by-side spawning press against plant material where a single egg is deposited. The male's elaborate finnage and ocellate markings are understood to function primarily as signals in mate choice and male-male competition. Multiple spawning events spread over an extended period allow hobbyists to collect eggs from mops or plants progressively.

Breeding

Breeding A. ocellatum follows the established method for non-annual Aphyosemion species. A conditioned pair or a group with more females than males is placed in a small, heavily planted aquarium or one furnished with fine-yarn spawning mops. Water should be soft, slightly acidic, and cool — reflecting the 64–72 °F native range recorded by FishBase — and the tank should be shaded to minimise stress. Eggs are laid singly on plant leaves or mop fibres and can be picked out by hand every few days.

Eggs incubate in water at the same cool temperature and hatch in two to three weeks, depending on temperature. Fry are small but free-swimming from the outset; they accept Artemia nauplii and micro-worms as first foods. Unlike annual killifish, there is no need for peat storage or a dry incubation period. The species is considered difficult in aquaria according to FishBase, and hobbyist reports note slow sexual maturation — taking four months or more — requiring patience before spawning commences. Stable, clean, cool water with minimal fluctuation is the critical requirement for long-term success.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion ocellatum occupies a niche position in the hobby: it is not commonly traded, and FishBase characterises it as very difficult to maintain. The combination of a modest size ceiling (2.5 in TL), a requirement for soft, cool, acidic water in the 64–72 °F range, and slow maturation places it firmly in the specialist category. Mainstream tropical aquaria kept at 75–82 °F are too warm; the fish requires conditions more consistent with a cool rainforest stream than a warm-water community tank.

A small, well-filtered aquarium of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a pair or small group. Dense planting or mop furnishing supports both the fish's security and its breeding behaviour. Tankmates, if any, should be small, peaceful, and tolerant of the same cool, soft parameters — other small Aphyosemion species kept under similar conditions are natural companions in a specialist collection. Males may spar with other males, so groups should be skewed toward females or maintain only a single male in smaller setups.

The species' rarity in the trade and its specific demands mean it circulates mainly among organised killifish hobbyists — the American Killifish Association (AKA) and affiliated national societies are the most reliable sources for both fish and breeding guidance. Acquiring captive-bred stock rather than wild-collected individuals is both more sustainable and more practical, as acclimated captive fish are better prepared for aquarium conditions.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion ocellatum as Least Concern in 2009, a status reflecting the absence of evidence for rapid population decline rather than confirmed abundance. The native range — the upper Ngounié drainage of southwestern Gabon and adjacent western Congo — lies within a biologically diverse but regionally pressured landscape. Large-scale logging, agricultural expansion, and road building in the Gabonese interior have reduced forest cover and affected stream quality in parts of the species' range, and these pressures are ongoing.

The species' apparent restriction to permanent, shaded forest streams makes it potentially sensitive to habitat modification: deforestation that exposes streams to direct sunlight raises water temperature, increases sedimentation, reduces dissolved oxygen, and eliminates the marginal vegetation on which plant-spawning killifish depend. Although Gabon retains substantially more intact forest cover than many other Central African countries — partly a product of relatively low population density and national park coverage — the broader trend across the Congo Basin is toward increased extraction and clearing. A current or future reassessment might more carefully evaluate the extent of range within protected areas and the degree of reliance on forest-interior streams before affirming the LC rating.
