Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion ogoense was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1930, with the type locality recorded in the upper Ogowe (Ogooué) basin of Gabon. The authority is presented in parentheses, indicating that Pellegrin placed the species in a different genus from Aphyosemion when he originally described it; subsequent revision moved it to its current position. The valid combination Aphyosemion ogoense (Pellegrin, 1930) is accepted by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) as the correct name under current taxonomy.
The genus Aphyosemion is among the most species-rich genera of African killifishes and belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae — the African killifishes. Within Aphyosemion, ogoense sits in a broader assemblage of Central and West African non-annual species that share the mop-spawning habit and broadly similar body plans; some authors have treated related populations or forms as subspecies or allospecies, and the genus as a whole has undergone repeated revision as molecular data have clarified species limits. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid name, and the species-level treatment of ogoense as a full species is the current consensus.
Morphology
Aphyosemion ogoense is a small, laterally compressed killifish reaching approximately 1.5–2 in in total length, with FishBase recording a maximum of 2 in TL. The body plan is typical of non-annual Aphyosemion: slender and elongate, with a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface and near-surface feeding, and rounded to lanceolate fins that in males are often extended and ornately pigmented.
Males display the vivid patterning characteristic of the genus — a mosaic of red, blue, and orange spots and streaks on a background that varies across populations, with colour intensity heightened in dominant or displaying fish. Females are considerably plainer: brownish to olive with reduced or absent iridescent spotting, an adaptation that provides camouflage when attending eggs near vegetation. Sexual dimorphism in fin shape is also pronounced, with males developing elongated dorsal, anal, and caudal fin rays that females lack.
Habitat
In the wild, Aphyosemion ogoense inhabits small brooks, forest streams, and drainage channels set within rainforest and forested savanna across its range. The type locality lies in the upper Ogowe (Ogooué) basin of Gabon; additional records come from the Bouenza and Kouilou-Niari drainages in the Republic of Congo, and from the upper Léfini and upper Djoué rivers, the latter two being Congo basin tributaries. These are permanent or near-permanent water bodies — the species is not an annual killifish and does not depend on seasonally drying pools for reproduction.
Water chemistry reflects the soft, acid conditions of Central African forest drainage: FishBase records a temperature of around 68 °F, pH near 7, and very low hardness (5 dH), while hobbyist data from killi.co.uk report slightly more acidic conditions of pH 6, 69 °F, and 3 dH — figures consistent with lightly tannin-stained, humus-influenced forest water with slow flow and a sandy or leaf-litter substrate. These are clean, well-oxygenated streams rather than the blackwater extremes of some West African Aphyosemion habitats, and the species tolerates moderate current in small brook channels.
Feeding
Aphyosemion ogoense is an insectivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates at or near the water surface and in the upper water column. Mosquito larvae, small aquatic insects, zooplankton, and terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water surface are all likely components of the natural diet, consistent with the broadly insectivorous feeding ecology of non-annual Aphyosemion species generally.
In captivity the species is straightforward to feed. Hobbyist sources confirm acceptance of frozen artemia (brine shrimp) and bloodworms as staples, and small live foods such as daphnia, cyclops, and wingless fruit flies are eagerly taken and help to maintain colour and breeding condition. High-quality micro-pellets or flake can supplement the diet, but meaty live or frozen foods should form the core of the feeding regime for optimal health.
Mating
Aphyosemion ogoense is a non-annual killifish with a plant or mop-spawning reproductive strategy. Unlike the annual species of the family Nothobranchiidae — which bury diapausing eggs in substrate that dries completely between seasons — ogoense inhabits permanent water and deposits adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, roots, or the fibres of spawning mops near the surface or just above the substrate. There is no dormancy phase; eggs develop continuously in water and hatch within a predictable period without requiring a dry interval.
Courtship is initiated by the male, who displays his full coloration to the female, spreading his fins and circling or positioning himself alongside her. Spawning is a drawn-out, incremental process rather than a single mass release: the pair make repeated brief contacts against vegetation or mop fibres over days or weeks, with the female depositing a small number of adhesive eggs at each contact. This pattern of extended, low-rate spawning is shared by most non-annual Aphyosemion and allows eggs to mature and hatch at staggered intervals, spreading recruitment risk.
Breeding
In captivity, Aphyosemion ogoense is readily bred using the standard non-annual Aphyosemion method. Soft, slightly acid water matching the natural habitat chemistry — pH around 6, temperature 68–70 °F, hardness below 5 dH — provides the most reliable conditions. Spawning mops (dark yarn mops placed at the surface or at mid-water) or fine-leaved plants such as Java moss serve as egg-deposition sites; the pair will work through the mop over days, depositing a handful of eggs at each pass.
Eggs can be picked from the mops by hand and incubated in shallow containers of the same water at room temperature; development to hatching typically takes 12–16 days depending on temperature. Because there is no diapause, the incubation is aquatic throughout and the keeper need only monitor for infertile or fungused eggs. Fry are small but robust and accept micro-worms and freshly hatched artemia nauplii from first feeding. Adults do not engage in intensive egg predation but the mop-pick method makes it easy to protect the clutch and track progress. Under good conditions a pair will spawn continuously for months.
In the aquarium
The Ogowe killifish is well suited to small, densely planted or mop-furnished aquaria — a tank of 10 US gal is adequate for a breeding pair or small group. The species is peaceful and can be housed with other small, soft-water fishes, though males will display to and occasionally chase one another; a single male with one or two females is the safest pairing. Bright lighting is tolerated but the fish show best colour under subdued or dappled light over a dark substrate with floating plants to diffuse surface illumination.
Water quality should be soft and slightly acid: target pH 6–6.5, hardness under 5 dH, and temperature 68–72 °F. The species is not tolerant of high temperatures and should be kept away from warm community tank conditions; the 68 °F optimum reported by both FishBase and hobbyist sources reflects the cool, shaded forest-stream origin of the species. Gentle filtration through a small sponge filter is preferable to strong flow. Regular partial water changes with soft, conditioned water maintain condition and stimulate spawning. The species is an ideal entry point into non-annual African killifish keeping.
Conservation
Aphyosemion ogoense has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status is therefore listed as Not Evaluated (NE). The species' distribution across the upper Ogowe basin, the Bouenza and Kouilou-Niari drainages, and upper Congo tributaries encompasses multiple hydrological systems in Gabon and the Republic of Congo — a geographic spread that provides some inherent buffer against localised habitat loss compared with single-locality endemics.
Nonetheless, the forest-stream habitats on which the species depends face ongoing pressure from logging, agricultural encroachment, and the associated siltation and run-off that degrade small stream chemistry. The soft, clean, tannin-tinged water of Central African forest brooks is particularly sensitive to land-use change; turbidity and increased pH from disturbed catchments can alter habitat suitability rapidly. Collector activity for the ornamental killifish trade introduces an additional variable, though for a species with this level of range breadth the trade impact is unlikely to be the primary conservation concern. A formal IUCN assessment drawing on current distribution and population data would allow a more precise evaluation of the species' situation.
