Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion plagitaenium was described by Jean-Henri Huber in 2004 in the hobbyist journal Freshwater and Marine Aquarium (volume 27, number 12, pages 70–74). The type locality is Epoma, in the Mambili drainage of the Likouala system, middle Congo River basin, Republic of Congo. The species is placed in the genus Aphyosemion Myers, 1924, a large and species-rich grouping of West and Central African non-annual killifishes in the family Nothobranchiidae.
The specific epithet plagitaenium is composed of the Latin plaga (a stripe, band, or region) and taenia (a ribbon or band), together conveying 'banded stripe' — a reference to the oblique banded markings that characterise the male's colour pattern. The American Killifish Association classifies this species in its Class 12 (Aphyosemion and others), reflecting the hobbyist organisational system for African plant-spawning killifish.
As is common across the genus, no synonyms are recorded for this species; it was described from a geographically limited type series and has not been subject to formal taxonomic revision. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Aphyosemion plagitaenium Huber, 2004 as the valid name.
Morphology
Aphyosemion plagitaenium is a small fish, with FishBase recording a maximum standard length of 1.5 in for male and unsexed individuals. Body shape follows the typical Aphyosemion plan: laterally compressed and moderately elongate, with a slightly upturned mouth positioned near the top of the head, adapted for feeding at or near the water surface.
Males are the more vividly coloured sex. The posterior flanks carry a distinctive arrangement of oblique red lines that form chevron or herringbone patterns, and there are red blotches near the base of the anal fin. This combination of oblique patterning and anal-fin colouration is noted as a unique colour pattern that distinguishes the species from related Aphyosemion in the Likouala region. The anterior body and head colouration has not been described in detail in available sources. Females, as is typical for the genus, are substantially plainer — generally brownish or olive with reduced or absent red markings — and slightly smaller and deeper-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
Aphyosemion plagitaenium is recorded from Epoma in the Mambili drainage, a tributary system of the Likouala River within the middle Congo River basin in the Republic of Congo. FishBase characterises its habitat as primary forest creeks with cool water — shaded, slow-moving or still channels running through intact lowland rainforest, where leaf litter accumulates on the substrate and overhanging vegetation provides dense cover.
Such habitats are typically soft and acidic: tannin-stained blackwater or clearwater streams with low conductivity, low pH, and minimal dissolved minerals, reflecting the chemical composition of forest soils and decomposing organic matter rather than mineral-rich bedrock runoff. Temperatures in shaded forest streams are cooler and more stable than in open savanna pools, consistent with FishBase's description of cool water for this species. Depth is shallow and current gentle or absent, with fine sediment or mud substrates overlain by leaf accumulations.
As a non-annual species, Aphyosemion plagitaenium inhabits permanent or near-permanent water bodies that do not fully desiccate seasonally — a fundamental ecological distinction from the annual killifishes of the adjacent Sahelo-Sudanian zone, whose eggs must survive dry-season diapause in the soil.
Feeding
No published feeding study is available for this species. Based on its genus membership and the general biology of small forest-stream Aphyosemion, the wild diet almost certainly consists of small invertebrates taken at or near the water surface and in the water column: aquatic and terrestrial insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton.
In the aquarium, individuals readily accept a varied diet of small live or frozen invertebrates — daphnia, artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and bloodworm — as well as high-quality small-pellet or granule foods formulated for predatory microfish. Feeding multiple small portions daily, rather than a single large meal, suits the species' naturally opportunistic feeding rhythm and reduces competition in group settings. Conditioning breeders with live blackworms or white worms before spawning attempts increases egg production.
Mating
Aphyosemion plagitaenium is a non-annual plant-spawner. Rather than burying eggs in substrate to survive a dry season, pairs court and deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged roots, or floating spawning mops over an extended period of days or weeks. This reproductive mode is characteristic of the entire genus Aphyosemion and reflects the permanent-water ecology of its forest-stream habitats.
Male coloration — the oblique red chevrons and anal-fin blotching — almost certainly functions in courtship signalling, as is typical for the brightly coloured males of other Aphyosemion species. The male pursues the female with lateral displays and drives alongside her through dense vegetation or mop fibres; spawning involves a brief side-by-side clasp during which a single egg is fertilised and adheres to the nearby plant surface or mop strand. This sequence repeats across multiple sessions. A preconditioned female may produce two to eight eggs per spawning session with a receptive male, though output varies with condition and temperature.
Breeding
Eggs deposited on spawning mops or plants can be collected every few days by picking or rinsing the mop into a shallow container of soft, slightly acidic water, or by moving the mop directly to a hatching vessel. The chorion is firm and the eggs are handled without difficulty within a few hours of laying. Incubation at typical killifish temperatures takes approximately two to six weeks depending on water temperature — lower temperatures extend incubation; higher temperatures accelerate it. No diapause phase is required or occurs; eggs develop continuously in water.
Fry hatch fully formed and free-swimming, ready to feed immediately. Starter foods appropriate for their small size include paramecia, vinegar eels, and freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Micro-worms can be introduced as fry grow. Rearing water should be soft and slightly acidic with minimal surface agitation; good hygiene is essential as fry are sensitive to bacterial bloom in small, still rearing containers. Growth proceeds steadily and young fish reach sexual maturity within a few months under good conditions, consistent with the non-annual life history.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion plagitaenium is a small and undemanding species suited to nano and species aquaria. A tank of 10–15 US gal provides ample space for one or two pairs or a small group, furnished with clumps of fine-leaved plants (Java moss, hornwort, or similar), floating spawning mops, driftwood, and leaf litter to replicate the shaded forest-stream environment and give females refuge from male attention.
Water should be soft and acidic — pH in the range of 5.5–7.0 and low hardness — and temperature kept in the cool-to-moderate range appropriate for a forest-stream species. Temperatures around 68–75 °F are suitable for long-term maintenance and breeding; excessively warm water shortens the lifespan. The tank should be well covered, as killifish are accomplished jumpers. Gentle filtration (a sponge filter is ideal) maintains water quality without generating strong currents. Males can be mildly territorial toward each other, so surplus females and visual breaks within the tank help reduce stress. The species has attracted hobbyist interest through the American Killifish Association, with photographic and breeding records available in the AKA's journal literature.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List has not yet evaluated Aphyosemion plagitaenium; its status is listed as Not Evaluated (NE). The species is known from the Mambili drainage of the Likouala system in the Republic of Congo, a region of intact lowland Congo basin rainforest. While this habitat is currently less degraded than forest zones closer to the coast or to centres of agricultural expansion, the Congo basin faces increasing pressure from logging concessions, artisanal mining, and expanding subsistence agriculture along waterways.
As a primary forest creek specialist apparently confined to a single drainage, the species is potentially vulnerable to localised habitat loss. Small-bodied endemic killifishes in single-river systems are among the most extinction-prone freshwater fish globally, because any disruption to the type locality — stream channelisation, forest clearance, sedimentation, or water extraction — can eliminate a species' entire known population. A formal IUCN assessment with field survey data from the Mambili and adjacent drainages would clarify whether the species' range is broader than the single-locality record currently suggests.
