Aphyosemion pyrophore is a small, brilliantly coloured non-annual killifish from the rainforest streams of the Lékoumou Province in southern Congo and the adjacent upper Ogowe drainage of south-eastern Gabon. A member of the A. ogoense species complex, it is distinguished from its close relatives by a striking caudal-fin pattern of flared red markings — the source of its name, from the Greek for 'fire carrier' — and by a chromosome count of n=19 with 32 arms. It inhabits permanent, soft, acidic forest streams and is a plant and mop spawner, producing water-incubated eggs over a protracted breeding season rather than burying them in substrate to survive drought. In the aquarium it is an established favourite among killifish enthusiasts, valued for its vibrant colour, manageable size of roughly 2 in standard length, and continuous, prolific spawning in soft, slightly acidic water.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion pyrophore was described by Joerg Huber and Anton Radda in 1979, placing it in the genus Aphyosemion — the large, morphologically diverse assemblage of West and Central African non-annual killifishes within the family Nothobranchiidae. The specific epithet pyrophore derives from the Greek pyr (fire) and phoros (carrier or bearer), a reference to the vivid red flame-like patterning of the caudal fin that distinguishes the species from otherwise similar congeners. The authority is correctly cited as Huber & Radda, 1979; an earlier informal reference suggesting 1977 predates the formal publication.

Within the genus, A. pyrophore belongs to the A. ogoense species complex — a radiation of closely related, morphologically similar killies distributed across the lowland and montane drainages of the western Congo basin and Ogowe system. The complex is characterised by variable but distinctive colour patterns on the unpaired fins, particularly the caudal, and by karyotypic differences that serve as an important diagnostic character. Aphyosemion pyrophore carries a diploid chromosome number of n=19 with an autosomal arm number of 32 (A=32), which separates it reliably from other members of the complex where external coloration alone may be ambiguous. Meristic counts include a dorsal-fin base of 12 rays (Dm=12) and an anal-fin base of 16 rays (Am=16); the dorsal fin inserts approximately 6–7 scales anterior to the anal-fin origin (D/A=+6 to +7). Killi-Data, the authoritative database maintained by Joerg Huber, is the primary taxonomic reference for the ogoense complex and records A. pyrophore among the species of the southern Du Chaillu Massif radiation.

Morphology

Aphyosemion pyrophore is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching approximately 2 in standard length — typical for the ogoense complex and comfortably within the range for the genus. The body profile is characteristic of Aphyosemion: a slightly humped dorsal contour, a straight to gently curved ventral line, and a rounded to slightly pointed snout. The caudal fin is notably asymmetric in colour pattern, with the defining fire-red elements concentrated in the upper lobe and fin margin, giving the fish its name.

Males are substantially more intensely coloured than females — the sexual dimorphism is strong and immediately apparent. Males develop a base body colouration of blue-green to turquoise iridescence overlaid with a pattern of red-brown spots or streaks on the flanks, and the unpaired fins carry vivid red and blue markings; the caudal fin displays the characteristic asymmetric pattern of flared red that distinguishes the species within the ogoense complex. Females are cryptically coloured in plain olive-brown, with rounded fins and minimal patterning — a common dimorphism across Aphyosemion that reflects the male's role in courtship display.

Habitat

The type locality of Aphyosemion pyrophore is Gnimi village, Mbaya Quarter, on the Muputulu River in Lékoumou Province, southern Congo. The species is distributed across the hilly country of Lékoumou Province and extends into the upper Ogowe drainage of south-eastern Gabon — a region of low to moderate altitude under the influence of the Du Chaillu Massif, covered in primary rainforest and secondary hill formations.

The streams this species inhabits are permanent, fed by rainfall year-round rather than seasonally flooded or reliant on ephemeral pools that dry out between rains — a critical ecological difference that separates it from the annual killifishes and determines its reproductive strategy. Water conditions recorded at collection sites are very soft and strongly acidic: pH 5.4–6.5, water hardness 0.5–180 ppm total dissolved solids, and temperatures of 64–66 °F in the field, reflecting the cool, shaded conditions of forested hill streams at moderate elevation. The water is typically tannin-stained and low in dissolved minerals, draining through laterite soils over a bedrock of ancient basement rock. Emergent and overhanging vegetation provides dense shade, keeping light levels low and temperatures stable.

Feeding

Like most Aphyosemion, A. pyrophore is an opportunistic carnivore in the wild, taking small invertebrates available in its forest-stream habitat: chironomid larvae, small crustaceans, worms, micro-crustaceans from the zooplankton, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface. The fish is a mid-water and surface feeder, well-positioned to intercept drifting prey.

In the aquarium the species accepts live, frozen, and prepared foods readily. Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (chironomid larvae), and similar small invertebrate prey form the nutritional core; fine-grade prepared pellets are accepted but should be supplemented with live or frozen foods to maintain colour and breeding condition. Small meal sizes fed frequently — rather than large infrequent meals — suit the natural feeding ecology of a small forest-stream predator.

Mating

Aphyosemion pyrophore is a non-annual killifish, and its mating behaviour reflects the continuous breeding cycle typical of species inhabiting permanent waters. Unlike the annual killies of seasonal savanna pools, which compress their entire reproductive effort into the brief wet season and then die, A. pyrophore can spawn year-round under stable conditions, with pairs engaging in repeated courtship and egg-laying over extended periods.

Courtship is initiated by the male, who displays his vivid colouration toward the female with spread fins and lateral body posturing. The male will chase and herd the female toward suitable spawning sites — fine-leaved aquatic plants, plant roots, or floating spawning mops. The pair make brief physical contact at the spawning site, with the male pressing alongside the female, and a single adhesive egg is deposited per embrace among the plant material or mop fibres. This sequence is repeated many times over the course of hours or days; spawning is protracted and distributed rather than a single mass-release event. In the aquarium, dominant males may harass females persistently if females are unable to escape, and a ratio of one male to two or more females, or provision of dense cover, reduces stress.

Breeding

The eggs of Aphyosemion pyrophore are adhesive and small, deposited individually among plant fibre, mop strands, or fine vegetation. Unlike annual killifish eggs, they do not enter diapause and require no drying-down or peat-incubation period; they develop continuously in water and hatch in 12–21 days depending on temperature, with development proceeding faster at the warmer end of the captive temperature range.

For deliberate breeding, hobbyists typically use a spawning mop or clumps of fine-leaved plant material — Java moss, floating riccia, or water sprite are commonly used — placed in a small breeding tank with soft, acidic water (pH 5.5–6.5, very low hardness). Eggs can be picked from the mop every few days and incubated separately in a shallow dish of similarly conditioned water, where they can be monitored and infertile eggs removed before they foul. The species is described by hobbyists as a prolific breeder under good conditions, producing consistent numbers of eggs across many spawning sessions. Fry are small at hatching but are generally capable of taking freshly hatched Artemia nauplii and micro-worms from the outset. The fish are comparatively long-lived for the genus, consistent with permanent-water life histories across non-annual Aphyosemion.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion pyrophore is an excellent aquarium fish for the killifish specialist and an approachable entry point for hobbyists moving from community fish to the more specialised world of African killies. Its modest size — 2 in SL — makes a 10–15 US gal aquarium appropriate for a pair or small trio, and its undemanding feeding habits and continuous breeding make it rewarding to keep. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as all Aphyosemion are skilled jumpers.

Water conditions should reflect the species' origin in soft, acidic forest streams: a pH of 5.5–6.5, very low hardness, and temperatures in the range of 68–73 °F suit it well; the lower end of that temperature range (close to the 64–66 °F field recordings) is tolerated and may in fact improve condition relative to warmer captive settings that push the fish beyond its natural thermal optimum. Gentle filtration through a sponge filter avoids the strong currents incompatible with a small forest-stream fish. A darkened, well-planted aquarium with floating plants, driftwood, and leaf litter suits both the biology of the fish and brings out the most intense colouration in males. It is best kept as a species tank or with very small, peaceful, non-competitive tankmates; it should not be mixed with larger or more boisterous fish. Floating spawning mops can be left in the tank permanently, allowing the fish to breed at will.

Conservation

Aphyosemion pyrophore has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This is not unusual for members of the A. ogoense complex, many of which remain under-studied relative to more charismatic or more widely distributed taxa. The species is endemic to a restricted range in the forested hills of Lékoumou Province in southern Congo and the adjacent upper Ogowe drainage of Gabon — a distribution defined by the hill-stream habitat of the Du Chaillu Massif region.

The primary threat to forest-stream killies of this type is habitat degradation through deforestation. The Congo Basin and Gabon both retain large areas of primary rainforest, but logging concessions and subsistence agricultural clearing have affected forest-stream catchments across the southern Congo and Ogowe basin. The very soft, acidic water chemistry that characterises this species' habitat is sensitive to catchment disturbance: loss of riparian canopy raises temperatures and alters the tannin-and-mineral chemistry that defines the microhabitat. The species' restricted range and apparent habitat specificity are grounds for precautionary concern even in the absence of formal threat data. It is established in the killifish hobby and captive populations provide a buffer, but the long-term security of the wild population depends on the preservation of its forest-stream habitat in Lékoumou Province and the southern Du Chaillu Massif.
