Aphyosemion raddai is a small, non-annual killifish endemic to the rainforest brooks of central Cameroon, described in 1975 by the Danish ichthyologist Jorgen Scheel and named in honour of the Austrian zoologist and killifish authority Alfred C. Radda. Reaching around 2.5 in total length, it inhabits soft, shaded permanent streams — water bodies that persist year-round, setting it apart from the seasonal annual killies of the region. Its modest size and exacting water requirements make it a specialist's fish, regarded as very difficult to maintain in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion raddai was described by Jorgen Jensen Scheel in 1975 on the basis of specimens collected from rainforest streams in central Cameroon. Scheel recognised this population as distinct from the closely related Aphyosemion cameronense, which it superficially resembles; the two species overlap in part of their Cameroonian range but can be separated on morphological grounds. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan) records the valid name as Aphyosemion raddai Scheel, 1975.

The species belongs to the large, diverse genus Aphyosemion, the African forest killifishes, placed within the family Nothobranchiidae. Aphyosemion as currently understood is almost certainly polyphyletic — molecular studies consistently recover several species groups that may not form a natural clade — but a comprehensive revision has not yet been formally published. Aphyosemion raddai is typically placed within the cameronense species group on the basis of colouration and meristics.

The specific epithet raddai honours Alfred C. Radda (1936–2022), a zoologist-virologist at the University of Vienna who was also one of the most active European killifish collectors and describers of the twentieth century. Radda collected extensively in West and Central Africa and contributed greatly to knowledge of the region's killies; the ETYFish Project records his role in recognising the Cameroon population as a separate taxon from A. cameronense.

Morphology

Aphyosemion raddai is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum recorded total length of 2.5 in (FishBase), with males typically more elongate and more intensely coloured than females. Like most Aphyosemion, it has a strongly upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding, and the eyes are large relative to head length — features suited to low-light forested stream conditions.

Males display the vivid colouration typical of the cameronense group: the body is typically reddish-brown to olive with rows of red or red-orange spots and streaks arranged in a reticulate pattern on the flanks, and the unpaired fins carry coloured edging or lyrate extensions. Females are drabber, brownish with less distinct spotting, and lack the fin extensions. Sexual dimorphism is therefore readily apparent in mature individuals.

Habitat

The species is native to the inland plain of central Cameroon, where it inhabits small, permanent rainforest streams and brooks. FishBase records the habitat as permanent water — an important distinction for a killifish, confirming that A. raddai is not a seasonal annual species and does not depend on temporary pools that dry out. These streams are typically heavily shaded by dense rainforest canopy, run over sand or leaf-litter substrates, and carry soft, slightly acidic water stained amber by decaying organic matter.

Water temperatures in these forest brooks are moderated by shade and tend to be relatively cool by tropical standards, with FishBase recording a range of 68–75 °F. The soft, tannin-influenced water of the Cameroonian interior rainforest reflects a catchment with minimal mineral input, resulting in low conductivity and a gently acidic pH. Aquarium-keeper observations suggest the species can adapt to a somewhat wider pH range (6.0–7.8) provided changes are gradual, but the natural chemistry is soft and moderately acidic.

Feeding

Like most small Aphyosemion, A. raddai is a micro-predator feeding primarily on small invertebrates. In the wild this means surface and mid-water insects, insect larvae, small crustaceans, and zooplankton encountered in and around the forest stream environment. The upturned mouth and surface-orientated posture are adaptations for taking prey at or near the water's surface.

In captivity the species accepts a range of small live and frozen invertebrate foods: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), tubifex, and similar small foods of appropriate size. Prepared micro-pellets or granules may be accepted by acclimatised specimens. A varied diet with a live or frozen component is generally recommended to maintain condition and breeding readiness.

Mating

Aphyosemion raddai is a non-annual killifish and a plant or mop spawner: the spawning pair deposit adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, moss, roots, or fibres of a floating spawning mop rather than burying eggs in substrate peat. Spawning occurs over an extended period — eggs are laid a few at a time across many days or weeks — rather than in a single mass event. This mode contrasts sharply with annual killies of the same region, which bury diapausing eggs in sediment to survive seasonal drought.

Males court females with lateral displays emphasising fin colouration; receptive females are followed closely and the pair move into plant growth or a mop for each spawning act. The adhesive eggs are deposited individually or in small numbers and adhere to plant fibres or mop strands. In aquarium conditions, a pair can produce fertile eggs continuously over weeks, with each egg developing in water without a diapause phase.

Breeding

Because A. raddai is a non-annual species, eggs incubate directly in water rather than requiring a dry storage phase. At aquarium temperatures in the 68–75 °F range, eggs typically hatch in two to three weeks. Newly hatched fry are small but free-swimming almost immediately and accept newly hatched Artemia nauplii or micro-worm as first foods.

FishBase notes that this species is very difficult to maintain in captivity — a reputation shared by several members of the cameronense group. The difficulties relate primarily to water quality and chemistry: the fish is sensitive to elevated nitrates, old or stale water, and significant departures from the soft, cool, slightly acidic conditions of its native streams. Dedicated breeders maintain it in soft, slightly acidic water with frequent small water changes, minimal stocking density, and careful attention to temperature. Eggs may be left with the parents if sufficient plant cover is provided, or harvested and incubated separately to protect them from being eaten. Fry grow moderately quickly under good conditions.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion raddai is a species for the committed killifish specialist rather than the general community aquarist. Its reputation for being very difficult to maintain reflects sensitivity to water quality rather than outright fragility: the fish can live for several years under ideal conditions, but it does not tolerate the benign neglect that hardier killifishes endure.

A small, well-planted aquarium of 10–15 US gal suits a breeding pair or trio. Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0, low hardness, minimal dissolved minerals) and cool temperatures in the 68–75 °F range are important. Dense planting with fine-leaved species (Java moss, hornwort, or synthetic mops) provides both cover and spawning sites. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter is ideal — and water changes frequent enough to prevent nitrate accumulation, which can trigger rapid deterioration. The tank must be covered, as killifishes are accomplished jumpers.

Because the species is rarely encountered in the mainstream trade, it is typically kept and exchanged within specialist killifish societies. Eggs and live fish circulate among hobbyists who value the genus for its extraordinary male colouration and the satisfaction of maintaining and breeding a demanding species from the Cameroonian rainforest.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List records Aphyosemion raddai as Least Concern (LC), reflecting that the species is not currently considered under immediate threat. FishBase confirms this status, noting a distribution in permanent rainforest brooks of central Cameroon.

Despite the current LC assessment, the broader context warrants attention. Aphyosemion species in central and west Africa are frequently narrow endemics tied to specific river drainages or even individual stream systems in the rainforest belt. The Cameroonian rainforest faces ongoing deforestation for agriculture, logging, and infrastructure development, which degrades and eliminates the shaded, cool, low-sediment stream habitats that forest killies require. Permanent streams that run through degraded catchments warm, silt up, and experience greater pH and chemistry fluctuations, conditions that are unfavourable for sensitive non-annual Aphyosemion. The degree to which A. raddai's range has been surveyed in recent decades is unclear, and the LC assessment may not fully reflect localised population declines if they have occurred in less-visited parts of its central Cameroon range.
