Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion schioetzi was described by the Danish ichthyologist H. S. Clausen in 1966, with the type locality given as the Djoué River in the Republic of Congo. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Aphyosemion schioetzi Clausen, 1966 as the valid name. The species is placed within the family Nothobranchiidae — the African killifishes — which has been separated from the New World Rivulidae and related families by modern molecular phylogenetics, though it is sometimes still listed under the older umbrella of Aplocheilidae in older literature.
The genus Aphyosemion is large and heterogeneous, embracing several dozen species of small, predominantly forest-associated West and Central African killies. Many Aphyosemion species are closely allied morphologically and genetically, and the genus has been subject to ongoing revision; A. schioetzi falls within the Congo Basin assemblage rather than the more intensively studied West African Aphyosemion clades. The specific epithet honours the Danish naturalist Ove Schiøtz, recognising his contributions to African zoology. The species name is therefore commonly rendered schioetzi in catalogues that follow the original spelling.
Morphology
Aphyosemion schioetzi is a small killifish reaching a maximum total length of around 2 in, as recorded by FishBase. Like most Aphyosemion, it is slender and laterally compressed, with a subterminal to terminal mouth adapted for surface and mid-water feeding. The dorsal fin is set relatively far back on the body, and the caudal fin typically shows the slight elongation or minor lyrate shaping common in the genus, though A. schioetzi is not among the most dramatically finnaged members of Aphyosemion.
Male Aphyosemion in general are significantly more colourful than females, displaying combinations of red, blue, green, and orange in intricate patterns of spots, streaks, and fin pigmentation. Females are typically olive to brown with reduced or absent colour patterning. Sexual dimorphism in fin shape is also marked: males carry larger, more elaborate dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. Precise colour descriptions for A. schioetzi in the published literature are limited in the available sources; the broad morphological description follows what is established for the genus from FishBase and AKA records.
Habitat
In the wild, Aphyosemion schioetzi inhabits the weedy margins of slow-flowing brooks and small streams in forested savanna — the transitional zone where Congolese woodland meets or grades into gallery forest along watercourses. FishBase characterises it as a benthopelagic freshwater species that is non-migratory, occupying the lower and middle water column of shallow, often densely vegetated stream reaches.
Its documented range covers the Djoué, Léfini, and Likouala river drainages of the Republic of Congo, and the right-bank affluents of the lower Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as the upper Niari drainage in the Republic of Congo. FishBase records a water temperature of approximately 72 °F and a pH close to neutral (around 7) for collection sites, suggesting the species occurs in water that is relatively soft and slightly acidic to neutral — typical of the tannin-influenced forest streams of the Congo Basin. The American Killifish Association's documentation of over forty collection localities across this range underlines that the species is broadly but locally distributed rather than confined to a single site.
Feeding
Like most small Aphyosemion, A. schioetzi is a carnivore, feeding on small invertebrates in the water column and at the surface. In the wild, the diet is expected to consist primarily of micro-crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, small worms, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface — the standard fare for a small predatory killifish in a forested stream environment.
In captivity, the species will take live and frozen foods readily: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), and tubifex worms are all suitable. High-quality micro-pellets formulated for small carnivores can supplement live and frozen foods. Regular feeding with varied, protein-rich foods supports colouration, condition, and reproductive readiness.
Mating
Aphyosemion schioetzi is a non-annual killifish and employs the plant-spawning reproductive strategy characteristic of Aphyosemion species from permanent or near-permanent waters. Rather than burying eggs in substrate to survive a dry season in diapause, the pair deposits small batches of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants, moss, roots, or floating spawning mops over extended periods — days or weeks at a time — before the eggs hatch in water after a short incubation period.
Male courtship in Aphyosemion typically involves the male displaying alongside the female with fins flared, showing his full colour to best advantage. The pair move together and, at the moment of spawning, press side by side among vegetation while releasing a small number of eggs and sperm simultaneously. The eggs adhere to plant material and are left without parental attention. This iterative, low-clutch-per-day strategy spreads reproductive effort across time and is associated with the more permanent stream environments that A. schioetzi inhabits.
Breeding
Under aquarium conditions, Aphyosemion schioetzi can be bred using the standard mop or planted-tank method employed for non-annual Aphyosemion. A pair or trio (one male, two females) is placed in a small, well-planted aquarium or a tank equipped with fine-leaved plants and floating spawning mops. Eggs are deposited individually or in small groups and adhere to the spawning medium. They can be collected daily or every few days by inspecting the mops and picking out eggs, or the mops can simply be transferred at intervals to a separate hatching container.
Incubation typically takes two to four weeks in water at around 72 °F, with the precise timing varying with temperature. Newly hatched fry are small but immediately free-swimming and should be offered appropriately sized first foods: paramecia, micro-worms (Panagrellus), or commercial micro-fry foods in the first few days, progressing to Artemia nauplii as they grow. FishBase notes that A. schioetzi can be difficult to maintain in the aquarium, suggesting attention to water quality, temperature stability, and diet is important for long-term success.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion schioetzi appeals primarily to specialist killifish keepers rather than the general aquarium hobby. Its small size (to 2 in TL) makes it suitable for a modest aquarium of 10–15 US gal, densely planted with fine-leaved vegetation, floating plants to diffuse light, and darkened with tannin-stained water or a dark substrate. Low flow and subdued lighting suit the species' forest-stream origin. FishBase flags it as difficult to maintain, so stable water quality — clean, soft, slightly acidic to neutral water at around 68–75 °F — is important.
The species is best kept in a species aquarium or with very small, peaceful tankmates that will not compete aggressively. Males of Aphyosemion can be combative with one another; keeping a single male with one or two females is the standard approach. The hobby has documented extensive collection locality data for A. schioetzi through the American Killifish Association, and killifish hobbyists often maintain locality-pure strains to preserve genetic integrity — prospective keepers should seek fish from a documented source.
The AKA and affiliated national and regional killifish societies are the principal sources for obtaining A. schioetzi outside of specialist fish shows and swaps, as the species is not commonly found in the general aquarium trade.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Aphyosemion schioetzi as Least Concern, with the assessment recorded on 16 February 2009 according to the American Killifish Association. The species' distribution across multiple drainages in the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo, combined with the documentation of over forty collection localities, suggests it is not narrowly endemic or immediately at risk at the species level.
Nonetheless, the broader Congo Basin ecosystem faces increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural expansion, and habitat degradation of gallery forest and forest-stream margins — the precise habitats that A. schioetzi and related non-annual Aphyosemion depend on. Degradation of small stream corridors through timber extraction and land clearance reduces the dense marginal vegetation that the species uses for spawning and shelter. Sustained monitoring of population status across its range would be prudent given these landscape-scale threats, even if the species is currently not considered globally threatened.
