Aphyosemion thysi is a small, non-annual killifish endemic to the hilly rainforest streams of the Mossendjo-Komono area in south-western Republic of the Congo, where it inhabits cool, clear brooks draining the Louesse-Niari River system. Described by Radda and Huber in 1978 and named in honour of the Belgian ichthyologist Dirk Frans Elisabeth Thys van den Audenerde, it belongs to the subgroup Mesoaphyosemion and reaches just 2 in total length. The IUCN assessed it as Vulnerable in 2009, citing a restricted extent of occurrence — fewer than ten confirmed localities — and ongoing pressure from commercial timber extraction that is degrading its forest-brook habitat.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion thysi was described by Austrian killifish specialist Alfred Christian Radda and Jean-Jacques Huber in 1978, based on material collected from the Mossendjo-Komono area of what is today the Republic of the Congo. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the valid name as Aphyosemion thysi Radda & Huber, 1978. The species is placed in the non-annual subgroup Mesoaphyosemion by the American Killifish Association taxonomy, a grouping of mid-sized, forest-stream Aphyosemion that share plant-spawning reproduction and comparatively elongate body form.

The genus Aphyosemion was established by Myers in 1924 and remains the largest genus of African killifishes, encompassing several hundred described species distributed across the tropical forest belt and adjacent savannas of West and Central Africa. Aphyosemion thysi sits within a cluster of closely related Congolese species whose distributions are often separated by river-basin boundaries or elevation gradients. Seventeen collection locations have been documented across the Republic of the Congo — including the drainages of the Bidouba, Bidoula, and Mewanga Rivers and towns such as Gnimi, Komono, Mossendjo, and Ngala — giving the species one of the better-documented locality grids for a Central African Aphyosemion.

The specific epithet thysi honours Prof. Dirk Frans Elisabeth Thys van den Audenerde (1933–2017), a Belgian ichthyologist at the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Tervuren) who made landmark contributions to the taxonomy of African freshwater fishes. The species has appeared in eleven issues of the Journal of the American Killifish Association (JAKA) between 1979 and 2023, reflecting sustained hobbyist interest in its maintenance and breeding.

Morphology

Aphyosemion thysi is a slender, moderately compressed killifish reaching a maximum total length of approximately 2 in (FishBase), typical of the mid-range within the Mesoaphyosemion subgroup. The body is fusiform and slightly laterally flattened, with a pointed snout, an upturned mouth positioned for surface or mid-water feeding, and relatively large eyes.

Colouration in the male follows the vivid pattern typical of forest-dwelling Aphyosemion: a complex array of iridescent spots and short streaks on the flanks — typically in red, orange, or blue — set against an olive to brownish or greenish base. Fin patterning is elaborate, with the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins bearing contrasting edges or lyrate extensions in mature males. Females are considerably plainer, showing a brownish body with minimal patterning and rounded, unextended fins — the degree of sexual dichromatism in this group is pronounced and makes sex identification straightforward in adults. Specific colouration details vary with collection locality across the known range.

Habitat

Aphyosemion thysi inhabits clear, cool brooks and small streams in mountainous rainforest in the Mossendjo-Komono area of south-western Republic of the Congo, within the Louesse-Niari River drainage. These upland forest brooks are typically shallow, shaded by closed-canopy vegetation, and carry water that is soft and mildly acidic, coloured light tea-brown by dissolved leaf tannins from forest litter. FishBase records a temperature range of 64–72 °F and a pH of 6.0–6.5 for habitat waters, reflecting the relatively cool and chemically gentle conditions of hill-stream tributaries in this part of the Congo Basin.

The species is benthopelagic, occupying the water column from near the substrate to the surface margins, and is associated with areas of accumulated leaf litter, submerged roots, and overhanging vegetation that provide both cover and spawning substrate. Like most non-annual Aphyosemion, it is not associated with temporary or seasonal pools and does not produce diapausing eggs — the streams it inhabits persist year-round, allowing the fish to live comparatively long lives relative to annual killifish from more variable habitats.

Feeding

Aphyosemion thysi is a micro-predator in the wild, feeding on small invertebrates encountered in the water column and at the surface — including aquatic insects and their larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and zooplankton of appropriate size. This diet is consistent with the feeding ecology of non-annual Aphyosemion generally, which forage opportunistically in the shaded, invertebrate-rich water of forest streams.

In the aquarium the species accepts small live and frozen invertebrates readily: Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm, Tubifex, and small chironomid larvae are all suitable. Because the fish is small and delicate, foods should be appropriately sized — nothing too large for the modest mouth. Dried foods are taken by some individuals but live or frozen items form the most reliable and nutritionally complete diet. Feeding once or twice daily in small amounts prevents waste accumulation in the soft, low-buffering water these fish require.

Mating

Aphyosemion thysi is a non-annual killifish that reproduces by plant-spawning, a mode shared by the broader Mesoaphyosemion subgroup. Pairs engage in repeated spawning events over an extended period rather than in a single mass-release tied to seasonal cues. During courtship, the male displays to the female using intense colour presentation and fin erection, driving alongside and beneath her. If the female is receptive, the pair briefly align side-by-side or the male curves his body around hers during the spawning embrace, depositing one or a small number of adhesive eggs at a time among fine-leaved vegetation, submerged roots, or synthetic spawning mops.

Eggs are adhesive and relatively robust, attaching to plant material rather than being buried in substrate. Unlike annual killifishes that rely on embryonic diapause to survive seasonal pond desiccation, the eggs of Aphyosemion thysi incubate continuously in water, with no obligate resting phase. The mating system is not monogamous in practice; in group settings, dominant males court and spawn with multiple females. In the hobby, a trio arrangement (one male, two females) is conventional to distribute the male's attentions.

Breeding

Breeding Aphyosemion thysi requires soft, acidic water that replicates the cool, tannin-stained conditions of its native forest brooks. FishBase records habitat pH at 6.0–6.5 and temperature at 64–72 °F; successful captive breeding is most reliably achieved at the cooler end of this range, around 68–72 °F, with a pH of 6.0–6.5 and very low hardness. The species is noted as difficult to maintain and breed — the AKA water-chemistry guidance emphasises that demanding Aphyosemion often require strict soft-acid conditions that many tap-water sources cannot provide without treatment.

Spawning mops of dark wool or clumps of Java moss are the conventional spawning substrate in captivity. Parents should be conditioned well on live foods before being introduced to the breeding tank. Eggs are collected by removing the mop at intervals of one to two weeks; they can be incubated in small containers of soft water or in damp peat moss, hatching in approximately two to four weeks depending on temperature. Fry are small at hatching and require infusoria or micro-worm as first foods before graduating to baby Artemia. The fish are not particularly prolific, depositing a handful of eggs per session; this, combined with demanding water-quality requirements, makes Aphyosemion thysi a species for experienced killifish keepers rather than beginners.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion thysi is an infrequently imported species that circulates mainly among specialist killifish hobbyists, particularly members of the American Killifish Association and its European counterparts who keep and breed it from maintained strains. Its small size and demanding water-chemistry requirements place it firmly in the category of expert killifish rather than general community fish. A species-only aquarium or a pairing with other small, peaceful fishes adapted to very soft, acidic water is the appropriate setting.

A tank of 10–15 US gal is adequate for a trio or small group. Subdued lighting, a dark substrate, floating plants to diffuse surface light, and a background of tannin-stained water (achieved with peat filtration or Indian almond leaves) closely approximate the shaded brook habitat and encourage natural behaviour. Gentle filtration — a small sponge filter — avoids the strong currents these calm-water fish do not experience in their native streams. Temperature should be kept at 68–72 °F; the species is not suited to the warmer temperatures typical of many tropical community tanks. Regular partial water changes with soft, aged water are essential, as is a tight-fitting cover to prevent escape.

Aphyosemion thysi is a conservation-sensitive species, and hobbyist breeding contributes meaningfully to ex-situ population continuity for a fish that IUCN assessors have flagged as needing an updated assessment. Obtaining fish from reputable killifish society exchanges, with documented collection-locality codes where available, is preferable to sourcing wild-caught individuals.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion thysi as Vulnerable (VU) under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii) in a 2009 evaluation conducted by Moelants, noting that the species' extent of occurrence and area of occupancy both fall within the threshold for Vulnerable, and that the quality of its forest-brook habitat is in continuing decline. The primary threat identified is deforestation driven by commercial timber extraction in the Mossendjo-Komono area, which removes the canopy shade that maintains the cool, soft-water conditions these upland streams depend on and increases siltation and temperature fluctuation. The IUCN assessment record itself carries the annotation that it needs updating, reflecting how much the situation on the ground may have changed since 2009.

The species is known from fewer than ten localities in the formal IUCN assessment, though the American Killifish Association has documented 17 collection sites across the Republic of the Congo — evidence that the range is somewhat wider than the 2009 baseline, though still tightly constrained to the Louesse-Niari uplands. No active in-situ conservation programmes are known. The hobbyist community, through the AKA and affiliated European killifish associations, maintains living strains that have appeared in the JAKA since 1979; this ex-situ reservoir represents a meaningful contribution to long-term species continuity should the wild population decline further before a revised assessment and formal conservation action are mounted.
