Aphyosemion wildekampi was described by Jörg-Ingo Huber in 1979. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the name as valid under the current combination, placing it in the genus Aphyosemion within the family Nothobranchiidae. The species belongs to the large and diverse genus Aphyosemion, which encompasses the majority of the small, jewel-coloured non-annual killifishes of West and Central Africa.
The American Killifish Association recognises at least 22 documented collection codes for this species, reflecting the locality-conscious tradition of killi hobbyists who track populations by their precise collection site — a practice that has real conservation value as it allows captive-held populations to be traced to specific source localities in the Dja and Sangha catchments or the upper Ivindo.
The species is placed in the Aphyosemion subgroup by workers on African killifishes, but fine-grained phylogenetic placement within the sprawling genus has shifted across revisions as molecular data have been added. Morphology
Aphyosemion wildekampi reaches a maximum recorded total length of 2 in (FishBase), typical of the genus and consistent with the body size of most Aphyosemion species encountered in the hobby. The body form is the characteristic Aphyosemion build: moderately slender and laterally compressed, with the dorsal fin set well back and the caudal fin providing the primary display surface.
Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as is typical throughout Aphyosemion. Males carry the elaborate patterning — a base body colour overlaid with red spots, streaks, or reticulations on a blue-green ground, with a caudal fin that may be lyre-shaped or extended. Females are smaller, plainer, and more olive-brown in colouration without the iridescent markings of males. This strong dimorphism makes sexing straightforward and is one of the features that makes the genus attractive to hobbyists and photographers alike.
Habitat
In the wild, Aphyosemion wildekampi occupies the shallow margins of brooks, small streams, swamps, and slow-moving rivulets within equatorial rainforest and forested savanna. FishBase records its distribution across the Dja and Sangha drainages of Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and the Republic of Congo, with an outlying population in the upper Ivindo of the Ogooué basin in north-western Congo. These are all permanent or near-permanent water bodies — the species is not an annual killifish dependent on seasonally drying pools.
The water in these habitats is typically very soft and acidic, stained with tannins and humic acids from forest leaf litter and root systems. Feeding
Aphyosemion wildekampi is a carnivore, as are virtually all Aphyosemion species. In the wild it forages at or near the surface and through the water column for small invertebrates: aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans, and other micro-prey appropriate to its 2 in body size.
In the aquarium the species takes live and frozen foods readily. Brine shrimp (Artemia nauplii and adults), daphnia, micro-worms, and small bloodworm are all accepted. High-quality small pellets or granules formulated for carnivorous micro-fish are also suitable once the fish is settled, though live and frozen foods should form the dietary backbone for best colour and condition. The relatively small gape limits the practical size of prey items.
Mating
Aphyosemion wildekampi is a non-annual plant-spawner, and its reproductive biology reflects this fundamental distinction from the annual killifishes of genera such as Nothobranchius. Rather than triggering a compressed, flood-pulse-driven breeding season and burying eggs in sediment to survive drought, this species spawns on a protracted, continuous basis in permanent water — a strategy that requires no diapause and no desiccation-resistant egg stage.
Courtship is male-initiated. The male displays his full finnage and colouration alongside the female, herding and quivering beside her at the surface or among fine-leaved vegetation. When the female is receptive, the pair position alongside each other and the female presses against a leaf, plant stem, or spawning mop fibre while an adhesive egg is deposited and fertilised in place. Spawning proceeds in this manner over days or weeks, with a few eggs produced per session rather than a single mass-clutch event.
Breeding
The adhesive eggs of Aphyosemion wildekampi are deposited on fine-leaved plants, floating plant roots, or synthetic spawning mops and incubate in the water column without any requirement for a dry phase. Incubation period is temperature-dependent; aquarium experience with the species and its close relatives gives a typical hatch window of roughly two to four weeks at 72–75 °F. Eggs hatch to produce small but free-swimming fry within a day or two of emergence from the egg membrane.
For practical breeding in captivity, a small aquarium (2.5–5.5 US gal) set up as a dedicated spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water, a sponge or small mattenfilter providing gentle circulation, and a clump of fine-leaved plants (Java moss, water sprite) or a synthetic mop anchored near the surface gives the best results. Eggs can be collected every few days and incubated separately in small containers of tank water with a drop of methylene blue to suppress fungus, or the spawning medium can be removed periodically to a hatching container and replaced. Adults should be conditioned on a varied live-food diet prior to and during the spawning period.
Fry accept infusoria and paramecia as first foods, graduating within a week or so to micro-worms and freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is steady in warm, clean, well-fed conditions. The comparative longevity of non-annual killifishes — several years in captivity compared with a single wet season for true annuals — means breeders maintain their stock over multiple seasons rather than relying on stored eggs.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion wildekampi is considered a moderately demanding killifish, suitable for hobbyists with some prior experience of the group. FishBase flags the species as difficult in the aquarium, which in practice reflects the need for soft, slightly acidic water, a varied live-food diet, and careful attention to water quality in the small, well-planted tanks these fish prefer — rather than any special behavioural complexity.
A tank of 10–15 US gal is ample for a pair or a small group, decorated with dark substrate, driftwood, and dense planting to replicate the shaded, tannin-stained forest stream environment. A tight-fitting lid is important, as Aphyosemion species are capable jumpers. Gentle filtration (sponge or mattenfilter) is preferred over strong flow; the species inhabits still or near-still water in nature. Water temperature of 72–75 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, and low hardness (5–12 dGH) match wild conditions well. Males may spar, so in a mixed-sex group providing multiple females and visual breaks reduces conflict.
In the killi hobby, populations of Aphyosemion wildekampi are tracked by collection code, and hobbyists are encouraged to keep records of which population a breeding group originates from and to avoid mixing locality strains — a practice that preserves the genetic integrity of material linked to specific wild source localities.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion wildekampi as Vulnerable (VU) in 2009. The assessment reflects a species with a relatively restricted range across the Dja and Sangha catchments of Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and the Republic of Congo, and the upper Ivindo of the Ogooué basin — all areas within the Congo Basin forest block that faces sustained pressure from logging, agricultural conversion, and associated hydrological degradation.
The primary threats to the species are habitat loss and fragmentation driven by commercial logging concessions, small-scale agriculture expansion, and associated siltation and degradation of the small, clear, shallow water bodies it inhabits. The Congo Basin still holds the second-largest area of tropical rainforest on Earth, but rates of forest loss have accelerated in parts of the Dja–Sangha corridor in recent decades. The species' restriction to permanent brooks and swamps within the forest interior means that canopy loss and the associated changes to hydrology, temperature, and sediment load have direct negative consequences for its habitat quality.

This is of real, if limited, conservation significance — provided locality records are maintained and populations are not hybridised between collection sites.
