George Albert Boulenger described Scriptaphyosemion liberiense in 1908 in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History, with the type locality given as Goboru, Sierra Leone. The authority is rendered in parentheses — (Boulenger, 1908) — because the species was not originally placed in Scriptaphyosemion; subsequent revision moved it into that genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Scriptaphyosemion liberiense, placing it within the family Nothobranchiidae.
Scriptaphyosemion is a genus of West African non-annual killifish distributed along the Upper Guinea coastal zone from Sierra Leone through Liberia and into neighbouring countries. The genus sits apart from the annual Nothobranchius and Fundulopanchax lineages in both ecology and reproductive strategy: members are not tied to seasonally drying pools and do not produce diapausing eggs. Systematic placement and the boundaries of the genus have shifted over the decades as molecular data have refined relationships within the nothobranchid tree, but the liberiense species group remains consistently recognised.
Morphology
The Liberian killifish is a slender, laterally compressed fish reaching approximately 2.5 in standard length (FishBase; Killiclub de France), though the AKA Reference Library records typical aquarium specimens at around 2 in, suggesting males in good condition in a well-planted tank seldom reach the full wild maximum. The body profile is typical of the genus: a slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface feeding, a dorsal fin set far back over the posterior body, and a rounded to slightly lyrate caudal fin in dominant males.
Males are conspicuously coloured — the flanks carry a mosaic of iridescent blue, green, and red scales that break into rows or irregular patterning depending on the individual and the angle of light. The fins are patterned with spots, streaks, or marginal bands in contrasting colours. Females are considerably plainer: a brownish to olive-grey base colour with less vivid markings, the caudal fin rounded rather than extended. This strong sexual dichromatism makes sexing straightforward at any age beyond early juvenile.
Habitat
In the wild, Scriptaphyosemion liberiense inhabits coastal lowland rainforest across southeastern Sierra Leone and Liberia. The river drainages it uses — the Moa and Sewa in Sierra Leone, and the Lofa, Mano, and Saint Paul in Liberia — drain the Upper Guinea forest block, one of the most biodiverse and most threatened rainforest zones in West Africa. Within those drainages the species favours the smaller water bodies: forest brooks, roadside ditches, swampy ground, and still or slow-moving pools rather than main-channel rivers.
Water chemistry reflects the rainforest setting: FishBase records a pH range of 6.0–6.5 and a hardness of 4–6 dH, indicating soft, gently acidic water, likely darkened by tannins from decaying leaf litter under the forest canopy. Temperatures in the lowland coastal belt are stable across the year in the range of 72–75 °F. This is not a seasonal, drying-pool species; the water bodies it inhabits persist year-round or close to it, which is the ecological basis for the non-annual life history and in-water egg incubation that define the genus.
Feeding
Like most small killifish, Scriptaphyosemion liberiense is a micropredator that takes whatever small prey items are available at or near the water surface and in the mid-water column. In the wild this means insects that have fallen onto the water, small aquatic invertebrates, crustaceans, and zooplankton. The upturned mouth is well suited to intercepting surface prey and items drifting down through the water column.
In the aquarium the species is straightforward to feed. It accepts live and frozen foods readily — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii and adults, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), tubifex, and small mosquito larvae are all taken with enthusiasm. Dry foods such as high-quality micro-pellets and flake are generally accepted once the fish has settled, though a diet weighted toward frozen or live invertebrates produces the best colour and breeding condition. Frequent small feedings suit the species better than one large daily meal.
Mating
Scriptaphyosemion liberiense is a non-annual plant-spawner. Pairs form loose, non-exclusive bonds during the spawning period rather than defending permanent territories, and spawning activity is episodic and continuous rather than concentrated into a single seasonal event. A courting male displays to a female by spreading his fins and intensifying his colours; if the female is receptive, the pair manoeuvre alongside one another over a patch of fine-leaved vegetation, plant roots, or a synthetic spawning mop.
Eggs are deposited individually or in small clusters on the chosen substrate. Each egg is small, adhesive, and transparent, adhering to plant strands where it will incubate in water — no burying, no soil, no diapause. Spawning continues across days and weeks, with the pair producing modest numbers of eggs at each session rather than a single mass clutch. The British Killifish Association's Killi-News archive describes the species explicitly as a plant-spawner and notes it is not a soil-burial annual.
Breeding
The AKA Reference Library describes Scriptaphyosemion liberiense as an easy breeder, and the hobbyist consensus is consistent with that assessment. Breeding is most productive in a dedicated species or pair tank with subdued lighting and a dense planting of fine-leaved plants (such as Java moss, Taxiphyllum, or Ceratophyllum) or wool/synthetic spawning mops anchored at various depths. The soft, acidic water conditions of the wild habitat — pH around 6.0–6.5, hardness below 6 dH, temperature 72–75 °F — are recommended for optimal reproductive activity, though the species tolerates a somewhat wider range for general maintenance.
Eggs picked from the plants or mops can be incubated in shallow containers of slightly acidic water with a small amount of antifungal treatment (dilute methylene blue or dried Indian almond leaf extract). At 72–75 °F eggs typically hatch within two to three weeks. Fry are free-swimming from the start and can be fed infusoria or commercially prepared fry powder immediately, progressing to baby Artemia nauplii within a week or two. Growth is steady, and juveniles begin to show adult colouring in a matter of months. Because the species breeds continuously over an extended period, regular egg collection from the spawning medium is the standard management approach in the hobby.
In the aquarium
Scriptaphyosemion liberiense is one of the more accessible West African killifish for hobbyists who are new to the genus but comfortable with soft-water species. A small species or pair tank of 10–15 US gal is sufficient; a tight-fitting lid is mandatory, as killifish are agile jumpers. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter is ideal — since the slow, forest-stream conditions the species naturally inhabits carry little turbulent flow. Peat filtration or Indian almond leaf litter will acidify and tint the water appropriately and tends to bring the fish into better colour and readier breeding condition.
For general maintenance the temperature range of 72–75 °F is recommended, with pH kept in the soft-acid range around 6.0–6.5 and hardness below 6 dH; the Killiclub de France suggests 73 °F as a practical midpoint. The species can be housed in small groups — a trio of one male and two females works well — but multiple males in a small tank will spar, and excess aggression is usually solved by reducing the male-to-female ratio or increasing space and cover. It is not a community fish candidate with the usual tropical mix; its requirements and its relatively small size make killifish company or appropriately sized West African dwarf cichlids better choices as tankmates.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Scriptaphyosemion liberiense as Least Concern (LC), with the assessment completed in 2020 by I. Diallo. The Least Concern status reflects the species' comparatively wide distribution across the Upper Guinea coast — it spans both Sierra Leone and Liberia — and its tolerance of degraded habitats relative to the most narrowly endemic West African killifish.
Nevertheless, the coastal rainforest belt it occupies is among the most heavily deforested regions in West Africa. Liberia and Sierra Leone have both experienced extensive logging, agricultural conversion, and civil-conflict-driven land-use change over the past several decades. Riparian buffers are narrow or absent in many areas, and the silting and warming of small forest streams that follows deforestation directly affects the soft, cool, shaded water bodies the species inhabits. Sustained monitoring is important, because the LC assessment captures a snapshot of range, not forest cover trends; if the Upper Guinea forest block continues to contract, species currently rated Least Concern on the basis of their distribution width may face reassessment.
