The clown killifish is one of West Africa's smallest and most striking panchax — a non-annual plant spawner that lives in shallow, heavily vegetated streams and forest pools from Guinea east to Cameroon. Males carry brilliant red and blue banding on their caudal fin and vivid ring patterning on the body, earning both common names: 'clown' for the flamboyant coloration, 'rocket' for the torpedo-shaped silhouette and streamlined finnage. Despite their ornate appearance, clown killifish remain barely 1.5 in long as adults, and their manageable size, peaceful temperament, and tolerance of slightly acidic soft water have made them one of the most widely kept panchax in the hobby. Unlike the annual killies of savanna flood pools, Epiplatys annulatus inhabits permanent or semi-permanent water and breeds on plants or spawning mops, with eggs that incubate directly in water — no diapause, no peat, no dry-season burial.

Taxonomy & naming

Epiplatys annulatus was described by the Belgian zoologist George Albert Boulenger in 1915, with Cameroon given as the type locality. The authority is presented in parentheses because Boulenger placed the species in a different genus; the current genus Epiplatys was established later and the binomial was transferred accordingly. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong, CAS) records the valid combination as Epiplatys annulatus (Boulenger, 1915), placing the species in the family Nothobranchiidae — the clade that unites nearly all African killies.

Within Epiplatys, the species belongs to the broader 'panchax' assemblage of non-annual West and Central African killifish that occupy permanent streams rather than the ephemeral pools exploited by annual species. The genus name Epiplatys derives from the Greek epi ('upon' or 'above') and platys ('broad' or 'flat'), describing the flattened dorsal profile that allows the fish to hover just beneath the water surface and ambush prey from below. The specific epithet annulatus comes from the Latin annulus ('ring'), a direct reference to the distinctive ring-like banding that encircles the body and the bold barring on the caudal fin.

Morphology

Adult Epiplatys annulatus are very small, reaching a maximum of 1.5 in standard length (FishBase), with most aquarium individuals remaining slightly shorter. The body is elongate and somewhat cylindrical — the 'rocket' silhouette — and laterally compressed only modestly. The dorsal surface is flattened, the mouth is superior (upturned), and the eyes are large relative to head size, adaptations consistent with a surface-oriented ambush predator.

Male coloration is the species' defining trait. The body carries four to five bold dark transverse bands or ring-like markings on a pale yellow-olive to cream ground — the 'annulatus' patterning. The unpaired fins are the showpiece: the caudal fin is divided by vivid red and blue-black horizontal bands on the upper and lower lobes, with an orange or reddish submarginal stripe, giving the tail a dramatic striped appearance. The dorsal fin may also show banding. Females are considerably plainer — pale and translucent with faint banding and clear fins — but still carry the body rings. Sexual dimorphism is therefore strong and consistent, allowing pairs to be selected at a glance.

Habitat

Epiplatys annulatus is native to West Africa, ranging from Guinea and Sierra Leone through Liberia and Côte d'Ivoire to Ghana and Cameroon (FishBase; Seriously Fish). This is a broad coastal-lowland distribution spanning both Upper Guinea and the Niger Delta–Cameroon forest zone, following the arc of humid tropical forest along the Gulf of Guinea.

Within this range the species inhabits shallow, slow-moving, and often pool-like sections of small streams, forest creeks, and marginal backwaters that are heavily vegetated with surface and emergent plants, overhanging vegetation, and leaf litter. Seriously Fish describes the preferred habitat as acidic and slightly soft: pH 5.0–7.0 and temperature 68–77 °F (FishBase; Seriously Fish). These are the quiet, tannin-stained or clear-water environments of the forest understorey, not the open rivers. The species is benthopelagic (FishBase) in orientation — found throughout the water column but particularly associated with the upper layers close to cover, where it hunts small invertebrates from ambush.

Feeding

Epiplatys annulatus is a micro-predator in the wild, targeting small invertebrates — tiny insects and their larvae, emerging midges, zooplankton, and similar surface or near-surface fare. The superior mouth and surface-oriented posture both point to a preference for prey at or near the water surface, including items that fall from overhanging vegetation.

In the aquarium the species is straightforward to feed but benefits from live and frozen small foods. Seriously Fish recommends Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and mosquito larvae as ideal staples. Very small dried foods (micro-pellets, crushed flake) are accepted but do not produce the same vitality. Because of the fish's tiny adult size, food particle dimensions matter: anything larger than the width of the mouth will be ignored or spat out. Providing a mix of live, frozen, and prepared micro-foods keeps individuals in peak colour and condition.

Mating

Epiplatys annulatus is a non-annual plant spawner — a critical distinction from the annual killies that dominate public perception of the family. The species occupies permanent or semi-permanent water and has no life-history need for diapausing eggs or dry-season survival in the substrate. Breeding is therefore a sustained activity throughout the year rather than a race against a drying pool.

Males court females with fin-spreading displays that highlight their vivid caudal banding, positioning themselves alongside or slightly above the female to show off the lateral banding and the tail. Courtship is generally mild and the species is not especially aggressive, though persistent males can stress single females. Pairs or a trio (one male, two females) work well in a well-planted dedicated spawning setup. The American Killifish Association lists the species among its registered non-annual panchax, noting that adhesive eggs are deposited singly or in small numbers on fine-leaved plants, roots, or floating spawning mops over extended periods, consistent with the typical Epiplatys breeding mode.

Breeding

Spawning in Epiplatys annulatus follows the non-annual plant-spawner pattern: the pair hover among fine vegetation or a floating spawning mop, the male wraps briefly alongside the female, and a single adhesive egg is released and fertilised, sticking to the plant surface or mop fibres. This is repeated over days or weeks, with a few eggs produced per session rather than a single mass spawning event.

Seriously Fish records an incubation period of 10–14 days at 73 °F — no diapause, no peat storage, no drying-out phase. Eggs can be picked from the mop or plant daily and incubated separately in small containers of slightly acidified water to protect them from fungus and adult predation. Newly hatched fry are tiny but free-swimming immediately and accept infusoria, commercial fry powder, or freshly hatched Artemia nauplii from the first days. The adults are not particularly egg-hungry but a species tank with dense surface cover allows some fry to survive even without removal. Water temperature should remain within the 68–77 °F band throughout; colder water slows development without harm, warmer water accelerates hatch but can reduce viability.

In the aquarium

The clown killifish is among the most beginner-accessible of all killifish, and one of the few species routinely available from general tropical fish retailers. Its tiny size (under 2 in), peaceful temperament, and tolerance of a range of water conditions within the soft, slightly acidic band make it a natural candidate for nano aquaria, biotope setups, and planted tanks where it will not intimidate other inhabitants.

A group of six or more — ideally a mix of males and females — shows the full range of social behaviour and competitive display without the aggression that can arise between two males in a small space. Surface cover from floating plants such as Salvinia or Riccia is strongly appreciated, as is a dark substrate, which heightens the contrast in the males' coloration. Water values of pH 5.5–7.0 and 68–77 °F are appropriate; the species is intolerant of low water quality despite its small bioload, so regular small water changes are important. A tight-fitting lid is essential — like most surface-oriented killies, Epiplatys annulatus will exit any gap.

The species has been in the hobby for decades and captive-bred stock is widely available. It mixes well with similarly sized peaceful fish that share its water chemistry preferences — small rasboras, pencilfish, dwarf corydoras, and other non-annual panchax are natural companions. Lifespan in captivity is approximately 2–3 years (Seriously Fish).

Conservation

Epiplatys annulatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List as of 2026 — the species carries a Not Evaluated (NE) status. Its broad range across the coastal lowland forest zone from Guinea to Cameroon, its tolerance of varied permanent water bodies, and its established presence in the aquarium trade as captive-bred stock all suggest it is not in immediate crisis relative to single-locality endemic killies.

Nonetheless, the West and Central African lowland forest belt that constitutes its native range is under sustained pressure from deforestation, agricultural conversion, oil extraction, and expanding human settlement. Small, vegetated forest streams — precisely the microhabitats this species favours — are among the first casualties of land clearance, and the degradation of water quality and riparian cover in converted landscapes can render these sites unsuitable even before the stream physically disappears. Monitoring the species' status across its range and assessing population trends in areas of rapid land-use change would be a prudent step toward understanding its actual conservation position. The availability of healthy captive-bred populations in the hobby provides some insurance, but does not substitute for the preservation of intact forest stream habitats across its native West African range.
