The Yucatan gambusia is one of the unsung mosquitofishes of Middle America — a small, robust, olive-flanked livebearer that swarms in the karstic pools, cenotes and coastal lagoons of the Yucatan Peninsula and its surrounding lowlands. Gambusia yucatana ranges along the Atlantic slope of southern Mexico into northern Guatemala and Belize, where it tolerates conditions few aquarium fishes could survive: brackish mangrove ponds that swing from cool night temperatures to over 104 °F by midday. Like its notorious relative the western mosquitofish, it is a surface-skimming, live-bearing toothcarp that has been moved around for mosquito-larva control — and, in places, has become an unwelcome guest as a result.

Taxonomy & naming

Gambusia yucatana was described by the British ichthyologist Charles Tate Regan in 1914, on the basis of material from the Yucatan Peninsula that gives the species its epithet. It belongs to the genus Gambusia within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, and is one of only a handful of Gambusia species found in Mexican waters. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Gambusia yucatana Regan, 1914 as the valid name, placing it in the order Cyprinodontiformes alongside the other internally fertilising toothcarps.

The genus name Gambusia has an unusually wry origin: it derives from the Cuban Spanish term "gambusino," used in the phrase "pescar gambusinos" — literally "to fish for nothing," or to come back empty-handed. The name fits these small, economically negligible fishes that a fisherman would never bother to keep. Within the genus, G. yucatana is closely allied to and easily confused with the Caribbean gambusia (Gambusia puncticulata), and in the field it can also be mistaken for the much larger pike killifish (Belonesox belizanus) that shares its waters. The fish is poorly studied relative to its abundance, and detailed data on its age, growth, longevity and movement remain sparse.

Morphology

Gambusia yucatana is a small fish with the moderately robust, laterally compressed body typical of the mosquitofishes, tapering and compressed toward the rear. The ground colour is a light olive, marked along the sides with rows of large dark-brown spots, and a dark bar runs beneath the eye — a useful field mark, as it does not extend back into the gill cover. The caudal fin is rounded, the dorsal fin (with roughly seven to ten rays) sits well back on the body, and the anal fin (ten to eleven rays) originates ahead of the dorsal.

The species shows clear sexual dimorphism in both size and finnage. Females are the larger sex, reaching about 3 in in total length, while males top out around 2 in. Males are distinguished by bright orange caudal fins crossed by two or three rows of dark spots, and — as in all poeciliids — by the gonopodium, the modified anal fin used in mating. In females the pelvic fin tips are characteristically swollen. The mouth is set with a projecting lower jaw bearing an outer row of large, backward-curved teeth backed by rows of small pointed teeth, an arrangement suited to its surface-feeding habit.

Habitat

Gambusia yucatana occupies the Atlantic slope of Mexico from the lower Río Coatzacoalcos basin southeastward across the Yucatan Peninsula — including inland cenotes and offshore islands — and south into northern Guatemala (the Lake Petén region, with records from Lakes Lachuá and Yaxhá, and the upper Usumacinta) and Belize (the Hondo River drainage and the offshore Belizean cays). It is recorded from the Mexican states of Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz and Yucatan. A translocated population exists in the San Pedro River of Nayarit, on Mexico's Pacific side.

The fish lives in shallow fresh and brackish waters: rivers, streams, freshwater marshes and small pools, as well as coastal brackish and saline lagoons, generally at depths down to about a metre. It is remarkable for its environmental tolerance. FishBase gives a preferred range of pH 7.5–8.3, hardness 15–30 dH and tropical temperatures of 72–82 °F, but the species copes with far harsher extremes in the wild: on the small mangrove islands of Belize it inhabits ponds whose temperatures swing from roughly 79 °F at night to above 104 °F at midday, and it has been recorded tolerating up to about 108 °F. It reaches very high densities in the karstic pools of the Yucatan Peninsula, and accounts for a notable share of the fish community in some Belizean cay habitats.

Feeding

Gambusia yucatana is a surface feeder. Its projecting lower jaw and forward-set teeth allow it to skim the surface film, gulping air and taking microscopic matter and small drifting items from the top of the water column. Like other mosquitofishes it is an opportunistic micro-predator and omnivore, and its appetite for the larvae of mosquitoes and other insects is precisely the trait that has led people to move it between waters for biological pest control.

Detailed dietary studies of this particular species are limited — it remains, despite its abundance, a poorly investigated fish, with little published on its diet, growth or longevity. In the aquarium it can be expected to behave like its relatives: accepting small flake and micro-pellets readily, and relishing small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and finely chopped bloodworm, with mosquito larvae a natural favourite. As with all small, constantly grazing livebearers, frequent small feedings suit it better than occasional large meals.

Mating

Reproduction in Gambusia yucatana is internal, the defining feature of the poeciliid livebearers. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from the modified anterior rays of the anal fin. Rather than courting in any elaborate way, male Gambusia, like the western mosquitofish, rely largely on persistent pursuit and rapid, often coercive copulation attempts, repeatedly approaching females to attempt insemination.

Females can store viable sperm internally for extended periods, allowing a single mating to fertilise several successive broods without the male being present. Because the genus is so prolific and the species is described as highly fecund, populations build quickly where conditions allow — part of why G. yucatana reaches such high densities in the small, productive pools it favours, and part of why it spreads readily when introduced. Specific data on courtship behaviour, gonopodial morphology and mating dynamics in this species are sparse compared with the heavily studied G. affinis and G. holbrooki, but the broad pattern of poeciliid internal fertilisation applies.

Breeding

Gambusia yucatana is viviparous: the female carries the developing embryos internally and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The species is described as highly fecund, in keeping with a genus known for rapid population growth — FishBase rates its resilience as high, with a minimum population doubling time of under fifteen months. Gestation length and brood size in this species are not well documented in the literature, but Gambusia broods generally number from a handful to several dozen fry depending on the size and condition of the female, and a female can produce successive broods from stored sperm.

The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed immediately. As in other Gambusia and livebearers generally, there is no parental care and adults will readily consume their own young, so in captivity dense planting or separation of the fry is needed to raise meaningful numbers. The combination of live birth, early maturity and continuous reproduction makes the species both easy to propagate and quick to colonise new waters — the same fecundity that makes mosquitofishes effective biological-control agents also makes them difficult to contain once established.

In the aquarium

Gambusia yucatana is used in the aquarium trade, though it is a fish for the livebearer specialist rather than the community-tank beginner. It is small, hardy and undemanding of water chemistry — comfortably handling neutral to alkaline, moderately hard water in the low-to-high 20s Celsius, and tolerant of brackish conditions and considerable temperature swings that would stress most ornamental fish. A modest, well-planted aquarium with surface cover suits it, and like other Gambusia it appreciates room near the surface where it naturally feeds.

The main husbandry caution is temperament. Mosquitofishes are notorious nippers, and the persistent, sometimes aggressive sexual behaviour of males means tankmates should be chosen carefully; long-finned or placid species make poor companions. Keeping these fish in groups skewed toward females helps spread out male harassment. As with the whole genus, the more important responsibility is not in the tank but outside it: a hardy, prolific livebearer like this should never be released into local waters.

Conservation

Gambusia yucatana is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment published in 2019 (version 3.1, assessed 22 January 2019). The species is widespread across the Atlantic-slope lowlands of southern Mexico, northern Guatemala and Belize, occurs at very high densities in many of its habitats, and is common throughout its range; its population trend is recorded as unknown but it faces no range-wide threat. Localized pressures — pollution from urban and agricultural effluent, habitat loss and urban development — affect parts of its range but do not threaten the species as a whole, and it occurs within several protected areas, with no species-specific conservation measures considered necessary.

The more salient conservation issue runs the other way. Because of its hardiness and live-bearing fecundity, the Yucatan gambusia has been bred and distributed for mosquito-larva control — including along Mexico's Pacific coast around Acapulco, where it has been used to treat rainwater barrels — and has become invasive in some areas as a result, with a translocated population established well outside its native Atlantic-slope range. As with mosquitofishes worldwide, introduced Gambusia can compete with and prey on the young of native fishes; the responsible position for an aquarist is therefore to enjoy the species in the tank and never release it into the wild.
