The San Ignacio pupfish is a minute desert-spring endemic confined to a handful of saline, sulphurous thermal springs in the San Fernando basin of Nuevo León, Mexico. Described in 1999 by Lozano-Vilano and Contreras-Balderas from Baño de San Ignacio, it inhabits water that would discourage most fishes — karstic springs saturated with hydrogen sulphide, overlying travertine and hardened mud, at temperatures reaching 93 °F. The IUCN lists it as Vulnerable under criterion D2, reflecting the extreme rarity of a species whose entire world range can be measured in metres.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyprinodon bobmilleri was formally described by María de Lourdes Lozano-Vilano and Salvador Contreras-Balderas in a paper published in Copeia in 1999 (volume 1999, issue 2, pp. 382–387). The type locality is Baño de San Ignacio, a saline thermal spring in the San Fernando basin, Nuevo León, Mexico. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Cyprinodon bobmilleri Lozano-Vilano & Contreras-Balderas, 1993 — note that the authority date (1993) predates the Copeia paper, indicating that the name was made available in an earlier work, with the 1999 paper providing the full formal account.

The species belongs to the family Cyprinodontidae, subfamily Cyprinodontinae. Within the diverse genus Cyprinodon, Lozano-Vilano and Contreras-Balderas noted affinities with Cyprinodon variegatus, the sheepshead minnow, based on overall body plan and scale morphology. The genus Cyprinodon encompasses well over 40 recognised species of pupfish, predominantly distributed across desert springs, coastal lagoons, and inland basins of North America, the Caribbean, and northwestern South America.

The species epithet bobmilleri honours Bob Miller, the American ichthyologist who made foundational contributions to the study of freshwater fish of the arid American Southwest and Mexico, and who documented many of the region's endemic spring fishes before habitat degradation had proceeded as far as it has today.

Morphology

Like most pupfish, Cyprinodon bobmilleri is a small, compact fish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.5 in for males and unsexed individuals, and 1.5 in SL for females — dimensions typical of the genus. The body profile is rhombic in outline, a shape described in the original description, with an acute snout and a deep, laterally compressed trunk that tapers to a narrow caudal peduncle.

Colouration follows the pupfish pattern of strongly expressed sexual dimorphism. Females and juveniles display a spotted or blotched pattern on the flanks, with a weakly developed ocellus in the dorsal fin — a feature noted in the original description. In breeding males the spots are largely obscured by intense breeding colouration: males assume vivid iridescent blues and golds, with the flanks taking on the bright metallic sheen characteristic of territorial Cyprinodon males in full display.

The species also exhibits a feature common to H₂S-spring pupfishes — the capacity to persist and recruit in water with low dissolved oxygen, aided by physiological and haematological adaptations that have been documented in related sulphide-spring cyprinodontids across Mexico and Central America.

Habitat

Cyprinodon bobmilleri is known from three sites in northeastern Mexico, all within the San Fernando basin of Nuevo León: Baño de San Ignacio (the type locality), Baños de San Diego, and Laguna de San Diego. The type locality is a karstic spring roughly 20 metres wide and 1.4 metres deep, with a substrate of travertine and hardened mud. FishBase characterises the habitat as freshwater to brackish, with water temperatures recorded between 32 and 93 °F — thermal conditions that effectively exclude many potential predators and competitors.

The defining chemical feature of the habitat is its high hydrogen sulphide content: sulphurous gases bubble through the spring sediments, creating the conditions of a sulphide spring ecosystem. Vegetation is minimal under these conditions; the cache data notes only algae as plant growth at the type locality, lacking the aquatic macrophytes or submerged rooting plants that characterise many pupfish spring systems. The fish therefore occupies bare, chemically hostile water where its tolerance for H₂S and high temperature provides a competitive refuge.

These conditions place Cyprinodon bobmilleri among a remarkable guild of neotropical sulphide-spring specialists — though the San Ignacio springs lie far north of the best-studied Mexican sulphide-spring systems of Tabasco and Chiapas, representing an independent colonisation of this extreme microhabitat on the eastern side of the Sierra Madre Oriental.

Feeding

No detailed dietary studies specific to Cyprinodon bobmilleri appear in the available literature. Inference from the habitat and from the well-studied feeding ecology of close relatives provides reasonable guidance. Pupfishes in the genus Cyprinodon are omnivorous opportunists that graze algal mats and biofilms, pick invertebrates from the substrate, and consume any organic detritus available — a generalist approach well suited to the low-productivity, algae-dominated world of a sulphurous thermal spring.

In captivity, Cyprinodon species generally accept a wide variety of foods including dried flake and pellet diets, frozen brine shrimp, daphnia, and blanched vegetable matter such as spirulina-enriched foods. Given the algae-dominated nature of the type locality, plant-based foods are likely important dietary components for this species in the wild.

Mating

Cyprinodon bobmilleri is a non-annual pupfish — it inhabits permanent (or near-permanent) thermal springs and does not undergo diapause. Its reproductive mode is that of a continuous or seasonally pulsed spawner rather than an annual species whose eggs must survive desiccation. The FWS source notes that breeding occurs in spring and summer, and that males establish and defend territories with elaborate colour displays.

Male territorial behaviour in Cyprinodon is intense and well documented across the genus: males in breeding colouration actively defend patches of substrate against rival males, circling and flaring at intruders and occasionally engaging in jaw-locking bouts. A single dominant male may attempt to monopolise access to multiple females within his territory. Courtship consists of the male swimming alongside the female with rapid fin displays, leading her to the spawning site.

Eggs are deposited individually or in small groups on algae, fine substrate, or other available surfaces — the plant-spawner mode appropriate for a non-annual killi occupying permanent water. The adhesive eggs are left without further parental attention.

Breeding

As a non-annual, Cyprinodon bobmilleri spawns in water rather than depositing eggs in moist substrate for dry-season diapause. Eggs are adhesive and are scattered on algal mats or other fine substrates in shallow, warm water; they incubate submerged without a dormancy phase and hatch in a matter of days under the warm temperatures (90–93 °F) typical of the type locality.

No specific captive-breeding protocol for this species appears in the available hobbyist literature, and given its IUCN Vulnerable status and restricted range, dedicated conservation-breeding programmes would be the appropriate vehicle for captive management. In a genus context, Cyprinodon are relatively straightforward to breed under the right water chemistry: hard, alkaline, warm water (mimicking the spring conditions of the type locality), a fine algae or spawning mop substrate, and the separation of eggs or fry from adults, which will consume them. Fry are independent from hatching and can be raised on infusoria and finely powdered foods.

The spring and summer breeding season noted in the FWS account likely coincides with maximum insect emergence, highest algal productivity, and peak water temperatures in the springs — conditions that maximise fry survival and growth rate.

In the aquarium

Cyprinodon bobmilleri is rarely encountered in the ornamental trade given its Vulnerable status and highly restricted range. It belongs to the American Killifish Association's Class 1 (New World Non-Annual) grouping, and the AKA lists it as a species of record. Any captive material in specialist killi collections should be regarded as potentially important for conservation insurance.

Replicate the chemistry of the type locality: hard, alkaline water with a degree of salinity (a small addition of aquarium salt or marine salt mix is appropriate), a pH above 7.5, and warm temperatures in the 82–93 °F range. Hydrogen sulphide is not replicated in captivity, and the fish does not require it; the tolerance for sulphide is a field adaptation to an extreme microhabitat, not an aquarium requirement. Bright lighting to encourage algal growth on surfaces provides both a naturalistic feeding surface and cover for females escaping male harassment.

Males are aggressively territorial, as in all Cyprinodon, and should be kept one per tank unless the aquarium is large enough to allow multiple territories. A ratio of one male to two or more females reduces harassment pressure. The species is a suitable subject for a dedicated species aquarium or for a specialist pupfish collection alongside other small, similarly water-conditioned Cyprinodon.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Cyprinodon bobmilleri as Vulnerable (VU) under criterion D2 in 2018. Criterion D2 applies when a species has an area of occupancy below 12 mi² or very few locations (typically fewer than five), such that the species is prone to the effects of human activities or stochastic events within a very short time period. With a total range spanning only three spring localities in Nuevo León — Baño de San Ignacio, Baños de San Diego, and Laguna de San Diego — the species meets this criterion comfortably.

The threats facing sulphide-spring pupfishes in northeastern Mexico include groundwater extraction and spring diversion for agricultural irrigation, which reduces spring flow or eliminates it altogether; the introduction of non-native fishes, particularly the western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), which preys on eggs, larvae, and juveniles and has devastated pupfish populations across the US Southwest and Mexico; and general land-use change within the San Fernando basin. The thermal and chemical peculiarity of the H₂S springs provides some buffer against the most versatile non-native competitors, but mosquitofish are notoriously tolerant of warm and marginal conditions.

The extreme site fidelity of spring-endemic pupfishes means that a single catastrophic event — a drought, a toxic spill, the drying of a spring — could eliminate a population permanently. Conservation efforts for Mexican spring endemics have historically been underfunded relative to their US counterparts, though collaboration between Mexican institutions, the American Killifish Association, and international bodies has supported some captive assurance colonies for the most critically threatened species in the region.
