Taxonomy & naming
Cyprinodon bondi was described by George S. Myers in 1935. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) lists the valid name as Cyprinodon bondi Myers, 1935, placing it within the large and taxonomically complex genus Cyprinodon — the pupfishes — in the family Cyprinodontidae. The genus contains dozens of species distributed across North America, the Caribbean, and parts of Central America, many of them single-locality or single-basin endemics.
The specific epithet bondi honours the zoologist and bird curator Gilmore B. Bond of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, a significant figure in Caribbean natural history who contributed to early surveys of West Indian fauna. The species belongs to no currently recognised species group within Cyprinodon that is uniquely defined by the Hispaniolan form, and its exact phylogenetic position among Caribbean Cyprinodon remains an active area of genomic research — a 2020s biogeographic study of Caribbean killifish noted genomic introgression signals among island populations of the region, including C. bondi, pointing to a history of colonisation and secondary contact across what is now open water.
Morphology
Like most members of the genus, the Hispaniola pupfish is a compact, deep-bodied, laterally slightly compressed fish with a blunt snout and a small, upturned mouth — the classic pupfish silhouette adapted for picking at algae, biofilm, and small invertebrates near the surface and substrate. FishBase records a maximum total length of 3 in (2.5 in standard length), making it a medium-sized Cyprinodon relative to the genus as a whole.
Colouration in breeding males is characteristically vivid: a steel-blue to iridescent blue-green body overlaid with irregular dark vertical barring or patterning, fins developing orange or yellow marginal tints, and the deep body displaying the metallic sheen common to pupfishes in display. Females and non-breeding males are drabber — sandy-olive to brownish with less distinct barring. As with other pupfishes, sexual dichromatism is pronounced and males are demonstrably territorial, particularly in confined habitats.
Habitat
The Hispaniola pupfish is restricted to two saline lakes on Hispaniola: Etang Saumâtre (also called Lac Azuéi) in Haiti, and Lake Enriquillo in the Dominican Republic. Both are endorheic (closed-basin) saline lakes lying at or below sea level in a rift valley that bisects the island's southwestern peninsula — Enriquillo at roughly 40 metres below sea level is one of the lowest points in the Caribbean. FishBase records the species from both freshwater and brackish to saline conditions, consistent with the limnology of these basins, which fluctuate substantially in salinity with rainfall patterns and evaporation.
The surrounding landscape is xeric — thorny scrubland and dry tropical forest, with extreme seasonal heat and aridity. Feeding
Cyprinodon bondi feeds in the manner typical of the genus: a generalist picker of algae, cyanobacterial mats, small invertebrates, detritus, and organic biofilm from hard substrates and the water column. The small, upturned mouth is suited to scraping and picking at surface films and submerged algae films, and pupfishes in general are opportunistic enough to take midge larvae, crustaceans, and any other small food items that are locally abundant.
In the saline lake environment, the food base is determined by what thrives at elevated salinity — primarily algae, benthic invertebrates tolerant of the conditions, and organic material exported from the surrounding watershed. Captive C. bondi and closely related species readily accept dried and prepared foods, including algae wafers, micropellets, and frozen invertebrate foods, though the species is rarely kept.
Mating
The Hispaniola pupfish is a non-annual killifish that inhabits permanent water and therefore does not employ the soil-diapause reproductive strategy of annual egg-burying killies. Instead, it is a plant- and substrate-associated spawner in the manner typical of Cyprinodon: males establish small territories in shallow water and court females intensively, using the iridescent breeding colouration and lateral displays characteristic of the genus.
Mating is polygamous and males are markedly aggressive toward one another at close quarters — this is the defining social dynamic of pupfish breeding aggregations, where a dominant male defends a small patch of substrate and females move through. Spawning embraces are brief, and eggs are scattered in small batches onto fine-leaved vegetation, algal mats, or other structure rather than buried in substrate. Studies on closely related congeners such as Cyprinodon macularius confirm that Cyprinodon females preferentially deposit adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, typically near the surface; females can produce 50–200 eggs per week across multiple small spawning events.
Breeding
Eggs of C. bondi and its close relatives are small, adhesive, and attached to plant material or algal mats where they incubate in water — there is no diapause period, no peat-burying phase, and no requirement for a dry season to trigger hatching. This reflects the permanent nature of the saline lake habitat where desiccation does not occur. Incubation in the warm tropical water of the lakes is relatively rapid; congener studies suggest hatching in approximately 6–10 days at typical tropical temperatures.
Specific breeding data for C. bondi in captivity are sparse; the species is not commonly maintained in the hobby. Aquarists who have kept related Cyprinodon report that a ratio of one male to two or more females reduces male-on-female aggression, that clumps of fine-leaved artificial plants or spawning mops are the preferred egg-deposition site, and that the pair (or group) should be offered shallow, slightly saline water warmed to 75–82 °F. Eggs can be collected and hatched separately in shallow dishes with a small amount of salt to discourage fungus. Fry accept powdered dry foods and newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii from first feeding.
In the aquarium
The Hispaniola pupfish is very rarely encountered in the hobby and is not generally available through the ornamental fish trade. FishBase notes it is very difficult to maintain in an aquarium, though this likely reflects the challenges of sourcing individuals rather than any insuperable husbandry difficulty — other Cyprinodon species are kept successfully by specialist hobbyists.
For those who do obtain or work with C. bondi, the general guidance for saline Cyprinodon applies: a shallow, well-lit aquarium of moderate size, brackish water (roughly 3–8 ppt, emulating the saline lake conditions), temperature 75–82 °F, hard and alkaline chemistry, and adequate filtration for the warm conditions. Males are strongly territorial and aggressive toward one another; a single male with multiple females is the practical social grouping. Fine-leaved plants, floating mops, or algae-covered rocks serve as spawning substrate. Feeding presents no difficulty — the fish accept dried, frozen, and live foods readily.
Given its IUCN Endangered status and island-endemic range, any legitimate captive population of C. bondi would be best managed through a coordinated aquarium conservation programme rather than private hobbyist collections.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cyprinodon bondi as Endangered (EN) in June 2020, under criterion B1ab(iii) — meaning its entire extent of occurrence is below the Endangered threshold and the habitat quality within that range is declining. The species' entire known range consists of two lakes on a single island; any threat affecting either basin is a direct threat to a major fraction of the global population.
Both Lake Enriquillo and Etang Saumâtre face compounding pressures. Lake Enriquillo has undergone dramatic expansion in recent decades — more than doubling in surface area since the 1990s, a process linked to hydrological changes in the surrounding catchment — which may temporarily benefit the pupfish but also reshapes the shallow littoral zone where it breeds. Longer-term threats include water abstraction from the watershed, runoff from agriculture and human settlement around the lake margins, and the potential introduction of non-native fish species (including mosquitofish, the dominant anthropogenic threat to pupfishes worldwide). The IUCN assessment notes that no conservation actions are in place to protect the species, and that basic data on population size and trend are lacking. The assessors — including staff from the Albuquerque Biopark and the Museo Nacional de Historia Natural 'Prof. Eugenio de Jesús Marcano' in the Dominican Republic — called for population surveys and threat assessments as the minimum necessary steps toward a conservation plan for this island-endemic pupfish.
