The Carbonera pupfish is a critically range-restricted desert-spring endemic from a single spring system in the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico, known from little more than the Ojo de Carbonera — a handful of spring pools roughly 22 mi west of Villa Ahumada in Chihuahua state. Like many members of the genus Cyprinodon, it occupies an extreme and highly isolated aquatic refuge, making it acutely vulnerable to any disturbance of its spring source. The IUCN assesses it as Endangered, with a decreasing population trend driven by the fragility inherent to a species whose entire world reduces to a single spring complex in an arid landscape.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyprinodon fontinalis was described by M. L. Smith and R. R. Miller in 1980, with the type locality given as Ojo de Carbonera, approximately 22 mi west of Villa Ahumada in Chihuahua, Mexico. The valid name is maintained in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) as Cyprinodon fontinalis Smith & Miller, 1980. The genus Cyprinodon is large and diverse, encompassing the pupfishes of the Americas — a group of often diminutive, robust killifishes characterised by their tolerance of extreme conditions and their tendency toward extreme endemism in isolated spring systems, lakes, and coastal habitats from western North America through Central America and the Caribbean.

The species sits within the family Cyprinodontidae. Its nearest relatives within the genus are other Chihuahuan and Sonoran Desert pupfishes, a group whose radiation across isolated desert spring systems represents one of the most striking examples of allopatric speciation among North American freshwater fishes. Miller's broader contributions to Cyprinodon taxonomy — including work on the closely related Cyprinodon eximius (the Conchos pupfish) and other regional taxa — provide important comparative context for understanding C. fontinalis within the regional pupfish fauna.

Morphology

The Carbonera pupfish is a small, deep-bodied, and robustly built fish in the typical pupfish mould, reaching a maximum recorded total length of approximately 2.5 in (FishBase). Most individuals in wild spring populations are substantially smaller — adults commonly measure 1–2 in TL, with males tending toward the lower end outside of full breeding condition. The body is laterally compressed and stocky, with a rounded profile and a relatively large, upturned mouth well suited for picking food items off hard substrates and from the water column.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced in breeding condition, as is typical for pupfishes. Males develop vivid iridescent blue-to-violet or turquoise flanks with a darker posterior band and a yellow to orange-edged caudal fin; non-breeding males and females are cryptically coloured in olive-brown to golden tones with a series of dark bars or blotches along the flank. This colour dimorphism is a defining feature of pupfish courtship and territorial behaviour, with males using their gaudy coloration in aggressive and reproductive displays.

Habitat

The entire known native range of Cyprinodon fontinalis is the Ojo de Carbonera spring complex in Chihuahua, Mexico — a desert spring and its associated outflow channels situated in the Chihuahuan Desert grassland at an elevation consistent with the Mexican plateau. The habitat is the classic isolated desert spring: warm, clear to slightly turbid water emerging from underground aquifers, supporting aquatic vegetation and algal mats in shallow pools and channels. The surrounding landscape is arid, and the spring represents the only permanent surface water in the immediate area.

Water conditions at the spring reflect the carbonate-rich aquifer source. The NANFA captive propagation literature documents temperatures in the range of 81–90 °F (80–90 °F) for captive maintenance, consistent with a warm Chihuahuan Desert spring. The NANFA source notes low mineral content at the type locality, while the FishBase record lists a temperature range of 75–82 °F. pH is described as near-neutral in the available captive notes, with low carbonate hardness — an unusual profile for a pupfish, which are more commonly associated with hard alkaline water, though Ojo de Carbonera's specific geochemistry governs here. Vegetation providing shade, egg-deposition substrate, and cover is an important component of suitable habitat.

Feeding

Cyprinodon fontinalis feeds in the generalist opportunistic manner typical of the genus: grazing on algal mats and biofilm, picking small invertebrates from substrate and vegetation, and consuming detritus and organic particulates. Pupfishes are ecologically generalist grazers within their limited habitats, and C. fontinalis likely exploits the full range of food available at the spring — diatoms, filamentous algae, small crustaceans, aquatic insect larvae, and organic debris carried by the spring flow.

In captivity the species accepts a wide range of prepared foods: high-quality flake and micro-pellet foods, freeze-dried and frozen invertebrates (Daphnia, Artemia, bloodworm), and vegetable-based foods. Frequent feeding in small amounts suits the fish's active, grazing-oriented lifestyle. Good nutrition is important for maintaining the intense male breeding coloration and supporting successful spawning activity.

Mating

Like all members of the genus Cyprinodon, the Carbonera pupfish is a non-annual, oviparous plant- and substrate-spawner. Males are intensely territorial and vigorously defend a small patch of substrate against rival males, displaying their vivid breeding colours to attract females and intimidate competitors. Courtship consists of the male swimming alongside and circling the female with fins spread and colours maximally displayed, followed by a spawning embrace near vegetation, roots, mops, or algal mats where the adhesive eggs are deposited.

FishBase confirms the species begins spawning when males reach approximately 50 per cent of maximum body size, indicating early sexual maturity. The NANFA propagation notes document that males actively pursue females and initiate spawning repeatedly across days and weeks — consistent with the continuous, opportunistic spawning pattern typical of non-annual pupfishes inhabiting permanent spring systems. Multiple females may spawn with a dominant territorial male over a given period.

Breeding

Spawning in Cyprinodon fontinalis follows the non-annual plant-spawner pattern: adhesive eggs are deposited singly or in small clusters on fine-leaved vegetation, algal mats, spawning mops, or gravel substrate, and incubate in water without any period of dormancy or diapause. This distinguishes pupfishes from the annual killifishes of South America and Africa, whose eggs can withstand months of desiccation buried in dry substrate — C. fontinalis lays eggs that require continuous aquatic incubation.

The NANFA captive propagation guide recommends maintaining the species at 81–90 °F with frequent feeding and regular water changes to sustain reproductive activity. Spawning mops or fine-leaved plants serve well as egg-deposition sites. Eggs should be collected and hatched separately, or the spawning adults removed, as adults will consume eggs and fry. Incubation time is temperature-dependent; at the warmer end of the recommended range, hatching occurs within several days. Fry are small and require infusoria or commercial fry foods as first feeds before graduating to Artemia nauplii. Growth is relatively rapid at warm temperatures.

In the aquarium

The Carbonera pupfish is rated as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium by FishBase — a designation that reflects not biological fragility per se but the challenges of obtaining the species (it is rare in the hobby), providing appropriate conditions for a specialist desert-spring endemic, and managing the intense aggression of males. Pupfishes in general, and C. fontinalis in particular, are best kept in species-only setups; males are highly territorial toward conspecifics and will persistently harass females and rival males.

A relatively shallow, well-lit aquarium with a sand substrate, algal growth or fine-leaved plants, and broken sightlines (rocks, driftwood) to allow subordinate fish refuge is the recommended setup. The American Killifish Association and specialist Cyprinodon keepers recommend maintaining a ratio of more females than males to distribute male aggression; a single male with two or more females, or a large enough tank that multiple males can establish non-overlapping territories, works best. Water temperature in the 75–86 °F range, near-neutral pH, and clean, well-oxygenated water suit the species. Because of its conservation status, the Carbonera pupfish is primarily kept and bred by conservation-minded killifish hobbyists working to maintain a captive safety net; acquiring specimens from established captive breeding lines rather than wild-caught stock is the responsible approach.

Conservation

Cyprinodon fontinalis is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted in October 2018 and published in 2019 under the authorship of Valdes Gonzales. The listing criteria are B1ab(ii,iii)+2ab(ii,iii), reflecting the species' extremely small extent of occurrence and area of occupancy (a single spring system), combined with a continuing decline in the quality and extent of its habitat. Population trend is rated Decreasing.

The conservation vulnerability of the Carbonera pupfish is a direct function of its range: a species known from a single spring complex in an arid desert has no buffer against stochastic events, groundwater depletion, contamination, or introduced competitors. Desert springs in the Chihuahuan Desert face pressure from agricultural groundwater extraction, livestock use, and drought intensification. The introduction of non-native fish species — particularly mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), which have devastated isolated spring pupfish populations across the American Southwest and northern Mexico — represents a consistent and severe threat to range-restricted Cyprinodon species. Captive assurance colonies maintained by specialist hobbyists affiliated with organisations such as the American Killifish Association play a genuine conservation role for species at this level of risk, providing a genetic backup independent of spring-site conditions.
