The Julimes pupfish is one of the most thermally extreme vertebrates on Earth, restricted entirely to a single geothermal spring — El Pandeño de los Pando near the town of Julimes in the Chihuahuan Desert of northern Mexico — where the water never drops below 100 °F and regularly reaches 115–118 °F. With a mapped habitat of barely 287 square metres of core spring pool plus an adjoining artificial channel, and an effective population size assessed as critically low, it is classed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List and ranks among the world's most imperilled freshwater fishes.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyprinodon julimes was described by De la Maza-Benignos and Vela-Valladares in 2009, with the type locality the El Pandeño de los Pando geothermal spring in the municipality of Julimes, Chihuahua, Mexico. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Cyprinodon julimes De la Maza-Benignos & Vela-Valladares, 2009, placed within the family Cyprinodontidae — the pupfishes and toothcarps.

The genus name Cyprinodon is a compound of the Ancient Greek kyprinos (carp) and odous (tooth), meaning 'carp-toothed' — an allusion to the tricuspid, incisiform teeth that pupfishes use to scrape algae and biofilm from hard substrates. The species epithet julimes is a toponym, honouring the town and municipality of Julimes, Chihuahua, adjacent to the type-locality spring.

Mitochondrial DNA data reported in the IUCN assessment show extremely low genetic variation within the species, with the population skewed toward a single divergent haplotype exclusive to C. julimes — a signature of severe historical bottlenecking consistent with the species' isolation in a single tiny thermal spring.

Morphology

Cyprinodon julimes is a small, deep-bodied pupfish of the typical genus form. Seriously Fish records meristic proportions including head length 2.4–2.7 times in standard length, dorsal-fin base 4.7–6.1 times in standard length, caudal peduncle depth 4.5–6.5 times in standard length, and a wide mouth with notably large eyes. FishBase records the trophic level at 2.6, consistent with a primarily plant/algae-based diet supplemented with small invertebrates.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced in breeding condition, as is characteristic of the genus Cyprinodon: males develop vivid iridescent colouration — typically blues, greens, and metallic flashes — with dark lateral barring; females and non-breeding males are more cryptically patterned with brown or olive tones and less defined markings. The small, tricuspid teeth visible on both jaws are adapted for rasping algal mats and cyanobacteria, which dominate the spring's primary productivity.

Habitat

The entire known range of Cyprinodon julimes is the El Pandeño de los Pando geothermal spring system in Julimes, Chihuahua, Mexico, lying within the Middle Rio Conchos Basin of the Chihuahuan Desert. The core spring pool covers approximately 944 ft² with a depth of 15.5–31.5 in; a supplementary artificial channel of about 1434 ft² was colonised by the species after habitat restoration work in 2013 expanded the available marshland by approximately 984 ft².

Water temperature is essentially constant at 100–115 °F (Seriously Fish records up to 118 °F), making this one of the hottest thermally stable vertebrate habitats documented anywhere. The spring supports a distinctive endemic assemblage: besides the pupfish, it harbours the poeciliid Gambusia sp., the cochliopid snail Tryonia julimensis, and the sphaeromatid isopod Thermosphaeroma macrura. Aquatic vegetation is sparse — a single patch of Typha latifolia (cattail) has been recorded — but cyanobacteria mats, ranging from light green-blue to brownish-red in colour, blanket the spring floor and provide the primary food resource.

The spring sits within a site designated as Ramsar Wetland No. 2201 (listed 2013) and is managed as a conservation unit (UMA-El Pandeño) established in 2012. Despite this formal protection, the spring is not hydrologically isolated from human pressures in the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert landscape.

Feeding

In the wild, Cyprinodon julimes feeds on the cyanobacteria mats and diatoms that carpet the spring floor, supplemented by small invertebrates encountered while foraging through the biofilm. The trophic level of 2.6 recorded by FishBase places it near the base of the food web, consistent with this algal-grazing and micro-invertebrate diet. The incisiform, tricuspid teeth are well adapted to scraping material from hard substrates.

In captivity, Seriously Fish recommends encouraging the growth of filamentous algae on tank surfaces and décor, which provides both food and a naturalistic foraging substrate. Supplementary foods should include items that sink to the bottom, reflecting the species' benthic feeding posture: fine dried foods, small frozen invertebrates such as daphnia or cyclops, and prepared micro-pellets are appropriate. Overfeeding in the small volumes appropriate for this species should be avoided to prevent deterioration of the extreme water conditions the fish requires.

Mating

Cyprinodon julimes reproduces by the non-annual mode typical of pupfishes inhabiting permanent water: pairs spawn repeatedly over extended periods without a dormant diapause phase. Males defend small territories in the spring, displaying their breeding colouration vigorously and driving off rival males. Courtship involves close pursuit of females, with the male positioning alongside and performing lateral displays before a brief mating clasp during which eggs and sperm are released.

Because the spring temperature is essentially constant year-round, reproduction is not tightly seasonal, and ripe individuals have been observed throughout the accessible survey period. The compressed habitat — a few hundred square metres at most — means that the entire breeding population is visible to researchers, and effective population size estimates made during the 2013 IUCN evaluation were described as critically low, underlining the extreme demographic vulnerability of a species confined to a single room-sized pool.

Breeding

Eggs are adhesive and are deposited on algal mats, plant roots, and fine substrate near the spring floor — the plant/mop-spawner mode characteristic of non-annual Cyprinodon. There is no extended diapause: eggs develop in water and hatch within days under the warm spring conditions. Fry are small and initially cryptic, sheltering among algal mats and detritus.

In the aquarium, Seriously Fish recommends a minimum tank of 60 × 12 in for a pair, with warm water replicating the extreme temperatures of the type spring. Air-powered sponge filtration is preferred because it avoids the risk of eggs and fry being drawn into a mechanical filter. Spawning mops of wool, fine-leaved plants, or dense algal growth on hard surfaces serve as egg deposition sites. Because adults may consume eggs and small fry, providing dense cover or transferring eggs to a separate container improves yield. The thermal requirements — a sustained 100–115 °F — place practical demands on aquarium heating that limit husbandry to specialist keepers with appropriate equipment.

In the aquarium

Cyprinodon julimes is a genuinely extreme specialist in captivity, demanding water temperatures that most tropical aquarium heaters are not rated to deliver reliably. Seriously Fish recommends a minimum 60 × 12 in aquarium for a pair and emphasises that the extreme thermal requirements of the type spring — 100–115 °F — must be met. Standard aquarium heaters typically max out at 93–95 °F; achieving the species' requirements demands either professional-grade equipment or creative engineering, and sustained operation at these temperatures poses equipment reliability challenges.

Beyond temperature, the species is hardy relative to its extreme native conditions. It tolerates the hard, slightly mineralised water of the spring, and air-powered sponge filtration protects fragile eggs and fry. Décor should include surfaces that support algal growth — flat rocks, terracotta pots, coarse substrate — as filamentous algae and biofilm are both food and behavioural enrichment. Males are territorial and may harass females relentlessly in small quarters; sight breaks and adequate space reduce stress.

This is not a fish for the general hobby. Its conservation value, extreme husbandry demands, and rarity in captivity mean that it is encountered almost exclusively among specialist pupfish keepers who maintain it as part of coordinated conservation-focused breeding efforts rather than for ornamental display. Any specimens in the trade should be confirmed as captive-bred; collection from the wild population would represent a significant conservation impact given the species' total habitat area of under 2461 ft².

Conservation

Cyprinodon julimes is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List (de la Maza-Benignos 2019, assessed 4 July 2019), qualifying under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii)+2ab(i,ii,iii): extent of occurrence of 2 mi², area of occupancy of 0–2 mi², a single known location, and documented continuing decline in extent and area. The population's mitochondrial diversity is among the lowest recorded for any vertebrate, biased toward a single haplotype, indicating it passed through a severe genetic bottleneck — possibly at the founding of the spring's isolation from the broader Rio Conchos drainage.

The primary threats identified in the IUCN assessment are water over-extraction from the aquifer for agriculture, recreation, and therapeutic bathing (the spring is a local attraction for its reputed medicinal properties); water pollution from urban and agricultural run-off; and the search for new spring taps in the region, which risks reducing hydraulic pressure and flow. The species is also listed as Endangered (P) under Mexico's NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 national environmental standard.

Conservation measures in place include designation of the site as Ramsar Wetland No. 2201 (2013), establishment of the UMA-El Pandeño conservation management unit (2012), habitat restoration that added approximately 984 ft² of colonisable marshland in 2013, and an ongoing Vital Signs population monitoring programme. The IUCN notes that 91–100% of the species' habitat falls within formally protected areas — an unusually high figure that nonetheless has not yet reversed the declining trajectory, because the spring's hydrology is vulnerable to aquifer drawdown that protection of the surface alone cannot prevent.
