The La Palma pupfish is one of the most gravely imperilled vertebrates on Earth — a tiny Mexican desert-spring endemic that no longer exists anywhere in nature. Once restricted to a single limestone spring called Charco La Palma in Nuevo León state, northeastern Mexico, Cyprinodon longidorsalis was assessed as Extinct in the Wild by the IUCN in 2019 after its sole natural habitat was destroyed. The species survives only through an international captive-conservation coalition spanning zoos in the United Kingdom, Austria, the United States, and Mexico, with coordinated re-introduction efforts underway. At barely 2 in and coloured in gold and blue bars, it embodies the paradox of the pupfish clan: spectacularly resilient to extreme desert-spring conditions in the wild, yet utterly defenceless against the loss of the single spring it called home.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyprinodon longidorsalis was formally described in 1993 by María de Lourdes Lozano-Vilano and Salvador Contreras-Balderas in the journal Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 4, issue 4). The description was based on specimens from Charco La Palma spring in Nuevo León, Mexico — the species' only known locality. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Cyprinodon longidorsalis Lozano-Vilano & Contreras-Balderas, 1993.

The genus Cyprinodon, established by Lacepède in 1803, is the type genus of the family Cyprinodontidae and encompasses the pupfishes — a radiation of small, robust killifishes concentrated in the arid interior springs, coastal lagoons, and desert basins of North and Central America and the Caribbean. Within the genus, C. longidorsalis is one of three closely related Mexican pupfish species — alongside C. ceciliae and C. inmemoriam — that are now classed as Extinct in the Wild, all once inhabiting isolated spring systems of the Nuevo León–Tamaulipas region and all lost from nature through habitat destruction.

The species belongs to the family Cyprinodontidae (subfamily Cyprinodontinae) and the order Cyprinodontiformes — the toothcarps. FishBase places it in a benthopelagic, non-migratory freshwater lifestyle, consistent with a resident of a small, enclosed spring system.

Morphology

Cyprinodon longidorsalis is a compact, deep-bodied pupfish reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 2 in SL (FishBase), with an average size closer to 1.5 in in preserved and living specimens documented by conservation managers. The body is fusiform to moderately deep, typical of the genus, with the robust proportions and large scales characteristic of Cyprinodon.

Sexual dichromatism is marked. Males are strikingly coloured: a golden or golden-blue ground colour overlaid with 7–8 dark vertical bars along the flank, the bars being well defined and contrasting strongly with the iridescent body. The specific epithet longidorsalis — from Latin longus ('long') and dorsum ('back', referring to the dorsal fin) — alludes to the relatively elongated dorsal fin that distinguishes this species from its congeners. Females carry a prominent enlarged ocellus (eye-spot) in the dorsal fin, a feature that is conspicuous and useful for field identification; this ocellus is characteristic of several Cyprinodon females but is particularly well developed in this species.

The dentition is tricuspid, typical of Cyprinodon, adapted for scraping biofilm and algae from hard substrates, though the fish will opportunistically take small invertebrates and organic detritus as well.

Habitat

Charco La Palma was a small, clear limestone spring in Nuevo León state, northeastern Mexico. FishBase records a water temperature of approximately 70 °F at the spring, consistent with the geothermally buffered temperatures typical of desert-spring systems in the Chihuahuan Desert region. The substrate was described as muddy, and the water was clear — characteristic of a small, low-flow carbonate spring with little suspended sediment.

Like virtually all desert-spring pupfishes, C. longidorsalis inhabited hard, alkaline, mineral-rich water. Desert springs in the Chihuahuan biogeographic province are fed by deep limestone aquifers and typically carry elevated conductivity, high calcium and bicarbonate concentrations, and neutral to alkaline pH values. Field observers at comparable pupfish springs in the region documented air temperatures in the mid-80s °F (roughly 82–86 °F) with slightly cooler water temperatures, confirming the thermally stable character of these spring-fed systems.

The spring's isolation — a single, confined water body with no connected surface drainage — meant the species experienced essentially no gene flow and no opportunity for dispersal. This insularity, the hallmark of the entire desert-spring pupfish guild, is simultaneously what drove their remarkable diversification (each spring evolving its own endemic species) and what rendered them catastrophically vulnerable to any disturbance of their single water source.

Feeding

Cyprinodon longidorsalis was a dietary generalist in the manner typical of pupfishes inhabiting small spring systems. The tricuspid teeth and robust jaws of Cyprinodon are well adapted for scraping periphyton and attached algae from rock and detritus surfaces, and the gut contents of desert-spring Cyprinodon generally reflect a mixed diet of algae, biofilm, diatoms, small invertebrates, and particulate organic matter — whatever the spring microhabitat makes available.

In captivity, the La Palma pupfish is reported to accept a variety of small prepared and live foods appropriate to its size. Like other Cyprinodon, it is an active, exploratory feeder and should be offered a varied diet that includes a significant algae or vegetable component to replicate the periphytic base of its wild diet. Dried spirulina-based flakes or wafers, small frozen foods such as daphnia and cyclops, and fine live foods are all appropriate. Feeding little and often suits the temperament of an active, spatially territorial pupfish that naturally forages across a small but resource-rich spring habitat.

Mating

Cyprinodon longidorsalis is a non-annual killifish. It inhabited a permanent spring — a constant-flow limestone source that did not dry seasonally — and accordingly evolved a non-annual, plant-spawning reproductive strategy rather than the diapausing annual mode of killifishes from seasonal pools. Like other members of the genus Cyprinodon, pairs or small groups spawn repeatedly over an extended period, placing adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, algae mats, roots, or similar fine substrate near the surface or across the spring habitat.

Male Cyprinodon are famously pugnacious, establishing and defending feeding and spawning territories with vigorous lateral displays, chasing, and short charges. In the small confines of a spring — or an aquarium — a dominant male will monopolise access to females and attempt to exclude rival males from his territory. Females visit to spawn and then retreat; there is no pair bond. The coloration of males — the gold-blue iridescence and sharp dark bars — functions as both advertisement and threat signal, broadcasting condition and territorial status simultaneously.

Breeding

As a non-annual plant-spawner, C. longidorsalis deposits small adhesive eggs on fine substrate — plant leaves, algae filaments, spawning mops — rather than burying eggs in peat or soil. The eggs incubate submerged in water; there is no diapause phase and no requirement for dry storage. This distinguishes the species entirely from the annual Neotropical killies, which require their eggs to be stored moist but dry for weeks or months to complete embryonic development.

The eggs hatch after a relatively short incubation period — typically days at spring temperatures — and the fry are immediately free-swimming and ready to feed on microscopic particles. Fry are very small on hatching and require appropriately fine first foods: infusoria, paramecium cultures, or commercial fry powder before progressing to baby brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is relatively rapid in warm conditions and the fish reach sexual maturity at a small size, consistent with the short-lived but reproductively productive life history typical of Cyprinodon.

Under the current captive conservation programme, multiple institutions — ZSL (London Zoo and Whipsnade), San Antonio Zoo, Vienna Zoo, Acuario Inbursa (Mexico City), Guadalajara Zoo, and Bristol Zoo — maintain breeding populations as insurance against extinction and as the source stock for planned re-introduction. The multi-institutional structure is intentional: distributing the population across geographically separated facilities reduces the risk of catastrophic loss from disease, equipment failure, or accident at any single site.

In the aquarium

Cyprinodon longidorsalis is kept almost exclusively in the context of conservation — by accredited institutions participating in the coordinated captive programme and by specialist killifish hobbyists who have obtained fish through the conservation network. It is not a species available through the general ornamental trade. Those who do maintain it report that, like most Cyprinodon, it is hardy and undemanding in terms of water chemistry, tolerating a wide range of hard, alkaline conditions, but care should be taken to replicate the cool, stable spring-temperature environment of its origin: the FishBase temperature datum of 70 °F at the spring suggests that the aquarium optimum is moderate rather than tropical — around 68–75 °F is appropriate.

Male aggression is the primary management challenge. Cyprinodon are territorial and males will injure or kill rivals in confined spaces. A single-male harem setup — one male with two or more females — in a well-structured, planted aquarium with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops provides the spawning substrate needed while reducing direct male-male confrontation. Water hardness should be moderate to high and pH alkaline (7.5–8.5), consistent with its hard limestone-spring origin. Feeding with a mixed diet that includes algae-based foods maintains condition and colour.

For hobbyists who obtain this species through the killifish conservation community, maintaining studbook-accurate records and reporting breeding success to the coordinating institutions is part of the responsibility of keeping it. The species is a living artefact of a lost habitat; its presence in private tanks has genuine conservation value only when managed with the rigour that implies.

Conservation

Cyprinodon longidorsalis is Extinct in the Wild — one of the most extreme conservation categories a vertebrate can carry while still existing at all. The IUCN assessed it as EW in 2019 (assessment published September 2018). The sole cause was the destruction of Charco La Palma spring in Nuevo León, Mexico, the species' only known site. The spring was lost to water extraction, agricultural development, and the broader pressures of groundwater depletion that have eliminated dozens of desert-spring ecosystems across the Chihuahuan Desert region of northeastern Mexico and the US Southwest over the past half-century.

C. longidorsalis is one of three closely related Mexican Cyprinodon species now Extinct in the Wild; alongside C. ceciliae and C. inmemoriam it forms a grim triad of spring endemics lost from nature within living memory. Their story is part of the wider crisis facing desert-spring biotas globally: the combination of extreme endemism (single-locality species), aquifer over-extraction for agriculture, invasive species (particularly introduced mosquitofish Gambusia), and climatic drying has driven a disproportionate share of North American freshwater extinctions from this habitat type.

The Extinct in the Wild Mexican Pupfish Conservation Action Plan (ZSL, published 2023–2024) sets out a coordinated 2024–2029 programme covering C. longidorsalis, C. ceciliae, and C. inmemoriam. The plan encompasses: maintaining genetically diverse captive populations across a network of partner institutions; habitat assessment and remediation at Charco La Palma or a suitable analogous spring site; eradication of invasive species from candidate re-introduction sites; community engagement with local landowners in Nuevo León; and — as conditions allow — trial re-introductions. Whether the spring itself can be restored, or a surrogate site prepared, remains the central question. Until it is answered, the captive population in zoos in London, Vienna, San Antonio, and Mexico City constitutes the entire species.
