The Conchos pupfish is a compact, hardy desert fish native to the Río Nazas and Río Aguanaval drainages of the Mexican interior — high-altitude basins of Coahuila, Durango, and Zacatecas sitting above 1,000 metres on the Mesa del Norte. Like most members of the remarkably diverse genus Cyprinodon, it inhabits permanent water rather than the ephemeral desert pools favoured by annual killifish, and it spawns continuously over algae and submerged vegetation throughout the warm months rather than burying diapausing eggs in substrate. Though assessed as Least Concern in 2018, the species is a narrow endemic in a drainage basin under persistent pressure from irrigation withdrawal and agricultural development, and a molecular study by Echelle and colleagues has suggested that the Río Aguanaval population may represent an undescribed species — a finding that, if formalised, would make both resulting taxa considerably more geographically restricted than the aggregate range implies.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyprinodon nazas was formally described by Robert Rush Miller in 1976, with the type locality fixed as the Río Nazas near its mouth at San Miguel, close to the edge of Laguna Mayrán, Coahuila, Mexico, at an elevation of 1,302 ft. The holotype is catalogued at the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology (UMMZ 197419). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Cyprinodon nazas Miller, 1976, placing the species in the family Cyprinodontidae, subfamily Cyprinodontinae — the pupfishes, a New World radiation of extreme environmental generalists.

The species name nazas is a toponym referring to the Río Nazas, the principal river system of the Nazas–Aguanaval endorheic basin in the Chihuahuan Desert region. The genus name Cyprinodon is formed from the Greek kyprinos (carp) and odous/odontos (tooth), alluding to the molariform, multicusped teeth that characterise the genus and allow pupfishes to process algae, detritus, and small invertebrates with equal facility.

Taxonomic status within the basin is complicated by molecular evidence. A phylogenetic study by Echelle and colleagues (2005) found that populations from the Río Aguanaval system are genetically distinct enough to be treated as a separate, as-yet-undescribed species (Cyprinodon sp. Río Aguanaval), rendering C. nazas sensu Miller paraphyletic. This finding has not yet resulted in a formal taxonomic revision, so all populations remain under the single name for now, but the situation is worth monitoring — a split would significantly reduce the geographic range attributed to each resulting taxon.

Morphology

The Conchos pupfish is a small, deep-bodied fish with a rounded, somewhat compressed profile typical of the genus. FishBase records a maximum total length of 2 in, with a common length of 1.5 in TL — adults in a hobbyist tank will usually mature well under 1.5 in. The body is fusiform and moderately deep, with a slightly upturned mouth well-suited for picking food from the surface film or from algae mats.

Sexual dimorphism is pronounced during the breeding season. Males develop iridescent blue-violet or blue-green flanks with contrasting yellow to orange margins on the dorsal and caudal fins — the bright, turquoise-tinged breeding dress characteristic of many Cyprinodon males. Females and non-breeding males are patterned in subdued olive-brown with variable dark barring on the flanks, providing camouflage against sand, gravel, and silt substrates. Outside the breeding season male colouration fades considerably, making the sexes easier to confuse.

Habitat

Cyprinodon nazas occupies the Río Nazas and Río Aguanaval systems and their associated tributaries and satellite water bodies in the states of Coahuila, Durango, and Zacatecas — a closed endorheic basin of the Chihuahuan Desert that does not drain to the sea. The American Killifish Association documents 13 collection localities spanning the Río Nazas main channel, the Río Aguanaval, and smaller tributaries including the Río Guatimape, Río Melones, Río Florido, Río del Peñón de Covadonga, and a tributary of Laguna Santiaguillo, as well as the sites La Concha and San Miguel.

Field data from NANFA (Brill, 2025) describes habitat as clear to turbid water in creeks and rivers with little or no current, at depths of roughly 1–2 ft, over substrates of sand, gravel, mud, bedrock, and silt. At La Concha in the Nazas drainage, recorded conditions were 86 °F (86 °F) and pH 7.5. The type locality at the Río Nazas near San Miguel sits at 1,302 ft elevation — considerably higher than most lowland desert pupfish — and the water chemistry of the basin is characteristically hard and alkaline, consistent with an endorheic system in arid geology. The species is not reported from hot springs, distinguishing it from some other Cyprinodon taxa.

Feeding

The Conchos pupfish is primarily detritivorous and algivorous in the wild, feeding on algae, detritus, and associated microorganisms — a dietary guild that reflects the resource base available in shallow, sun-drenched desert streams. The multicusped teeth of the Cyprinodontinae are well-adapted to scraping biofilm and processing organic particulate matter from hard substrates.

In the aquarium, the species adapts readily to prepared foods. NANFA husbandry notes (Brill, 2025) list supplemental flake food and frozen bloodworms as accepted items alongside natural algal growth in outdoor tanks. A varied diet including spirulina-based flake, small frozen invertebrates, and finely powdered dried foods keeps adults in good condition and promotes spawning activity.

Mating

Cyprinodon nazas is a non-annual pupfish belonging to American Killifish Association Class 1 (New World Non-Annuals): it inhabits permanent water and does not bury diapausing eggs in substrate. Spawning follows a plant-mop pattern common to the genus — pairs or small groups release adhesive eggs onto filamentous algae, filter floss, or equivalent fine-textured surfaces, with eggs incubating in water and hatching without any diapausing period.

Male courtship involves vigorous display and pursuit, with the breeding male using his bright blue-violet colouration to establish dominance and attract females. The British Killifish Association notes that Cyprinodon spp. can breed in groups, trios, or pairs continuously when conditions support them. Males are aggressive toward one another but the aggression is largely ritualistic — in spacious outdoor pools NANFA observers noted no fin damage despite multiple males present. In small aquaria, however, male–male competition can become damaging, and providing adequate space or a single dominant male per enclosure is advisable.

Breeding

In the natural habitat, breeding is tied to the warm season. NANFA records continuous reproduction in outdoor tanks and pools from April through October, with the fish resting or reducing spawning activity in cooler months. The British Killifish Association recommends a cool rest period (59–64 °F, eight-hour photoperiod) to mimic natural seasonality and stimulate more vigorous subsequent breeding, though NANFA notes it is not strictly necessary.

Eggs are deposited on filamentous algae or spawning mops and incubate in water — no diapause, no peat-based drying protocol. Fry hatch at approximately 0.5 in and are free-swimming almost immediately. Growth is rapid: young fish can reach 0.5 inch (roughly 0.5 in) maturity in two to three weeks and may begin reproducing within their first season. Water temperature during incubation influences hatching speed in the range typical of the genus (optimal breeding temperature for Cyprinodon spp. per the British Killifish Association: 68–81 °F).

Optimal water chemistry for breeding follows the hard, alkaline profile of the native basin: the British Killifish Association recommends pH 7.6, carbonate hardness (kH) of around 16.9, and general hardness (dH) of around 22.5, achieved with gypsum, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium sulphate, and a measured addition of synthetic sea salt. These conditions mirror the mineralised water of a closed endorheic desert drainage.

In the aquarium

The Conchos pupfish is a rewarding if underappreciated killifish for the specialist. Its compact size (under 2 in TL), tolerance of a wide temperature band (the species survives 50–90 °F according to the British Killifish Association, with breeding optimal between 68–81 °F), and readiness to eat prepared foods make it practical to keep. Water chemistry should be hard and alkaline — pH around 7.5–7.8, moderately hard — rather than the soft acidic water associated with forest-stream killifish.

Male aggression is the main husbandry consideration. In small aquaria the dominant male may harass subordinate males or over-pursue females. Keeping a single male with two or three females, or housing males in visually separated compartments of a larger tank, prevents injury. Filtration should maintain clean conditions without creating strong current; the species naturally occurs in low-flow habitat. Algae growth on surfaces is beneficial both as food and as spawning substrate, and fine-leaved plants or algae mats should be provided alongside floating mops for egg collection.

The species is bred in the American and British killifish hobby and is occasionally available through specialist societies (AKA, BKA). It is not a commercial pet-trade staple, so obtaining it typically requires contact with killi enthusiasts or breeding groups. Given the molecular suggestion of a distinct Aguanaval population, hobbyists who can document collection locality (the AKA lists 13 such localities for the species) contribute valuable data by maintaining provenance-labelled stock.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Cyprinodon nazas as Least Concern in September 2018, citing a population that was not then in rapid decline and a range that spans multiple localities across the Nazas–Aguanaval basin. The species tolerates a range of habitat conditions and has been recorded at 13 collection localities, lending the aggregate population some resilience against localised disturbance.

However, the endorheic Nazas–Aguanaval basin is a heavily exploited watershed. Irrigation withdrawals for agriculture — particularly cotton farming in the Laguna region — have dramatically reduced flows in the lower Río Nazas over the past century; Laguna Mayrán, which adjoins the type locality, has been essentially dry for decades as a result of upstream damming and diversion. These pressures compress the effective range of the fish into higher-elevation reaches of the drainage. The suggestion by Echelle and colleagues (2005) that the Río Aguanaval population represents an undescribed species is taxonomically significant for conservation: if confirmed, each resulting taxon would occupy a considerably smaller and more vulnerable range than the combined species currently implies, potentially warranting a higher threat category under the IUCN criteria.

No mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) introductions into the main Nazas drainage are prominently reported in the available literature, but the broader pattern of Cyprinodon–Gambusia competitive displacement documented elsewhere in Mexico remains a potential threat. Maintaining captive insurance populations with documented locality provenance is therefore prudent for a species whose taxonomic boundaries and true conservation status remain uncertain.
