The bighead pupfish is a Critically Endangered desert-spring endemic found only in the Baños de San Diego spring system near the town of San Diego de Alcalá in Chihuahua, Mexico — one of the smallest and most precarious ranges of any vertebrate in North America. Described in 1993 from this single spring and its distributary channels, Cyprinodon pachycephalus inhabits remarkably warm water at elevations around 1,140 metres on the Mexican plateau and has been documented forming natural hybrids with the co-occurring congener C. eximius. Its total wild population almost certainly numbers in the thousands at most, confined to a spring outflow only a few metres wide, and any sustained disruption to the hydrology or water quality of Baños de San Diego would almost certainly push the species to the brink of extinction.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyprinodon pachycephalus was described in 1993 by María de Lourdes Lozano-Vilano and Salvador Contreras-Balderas in a paper treating four new pupfish species from springs of southern Mexico. The type locality is Baños de San Diego, at approximately 28°35.5′N, 105°32.5′W, in Chihuahua state, at an elevation of roughly 1,140 metres above sea level. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the name as valid without subsequent revision.

The specific epithet pachycephalus derives from the Greek pachys ('thick' or 'stout') and kephalē ('head'), alluding to the notably broad, flattened head profile that distinguishes this species from related Cyprinodon in the Río Conchos drainage. The genus Cyprinodon — from the Greek kyprinos ('carp') and odous ('tooth') — is the largest pupfish genus in North America, with dozens of species and subspecies distributed across desert springs, coastal lagoons, and inland saline basins from Nevada and California south through the Mexican plateau to the Yucatán Peninsula.

The species belongs to the pupfish assemblage of the Río Conchos drainage, a system that also harbours C. eximius. Hybridisation between the two has been documented at Baños de San Diego, a complication that complicates any future genetic survey of population purity and raises concerns about the loss of C. pachycephalus as a distinct evolutionary lineage.

Morphology

The bighead pupfish is a small, robust fish reaching approximately 2 in in standard length — a typical size for the genus. The body is deep and laterally compressed toward the caudal peduncle, with a distinctively broad, somewhat flattened head that is the basis of the specific name. Like most Cyprinodon, the mouth is small and terminal with tricuspid teeth adapted for scraping periphyton and picking small invertebrates from substrate surfaces.

Colouration in males during the breeding season is vivid: a bright iridescent blue-green to steel-blue body with darker banding, the intensity increasing with social dominance and reproductive readiness. Females and non-breeding males are more cryptic — sandy brown to olive with irregular dark lateral blotches and a series of narrow vertical bars. Both sexes typically show the dark caudal-peduncle spot characteristic of many Cyprinodon species. The body is covered in cycloid scales, and the fins are rounded, the dorsal fin lacking the elongated rays seen in some closely related species.

Habitat

The entire known wild range of C. pachycephalus is the Baños de San Diego spring complex near the town of San Diego de Alcalá, Chihuahua, and the distributary channels flowing from it into a man-made impoundment. The spring itself issues at a constant and notably high temperature — Seriously Fish records approximately 111 °F at the source — and the downstream channels cool somewhat before entering the impoundment, creating a thermal gradient across the system. The channel is narrow, typically 2–3 metres wide, and extremely shallow: fish habitat is measured in centimetres of depth in many sections.

Water chemistry is hard and mildly alkaline, as is typical for desert-spring systems on the Mexican plateau: the American Killifish Association documents pH of approximately 7.5 and a slight salinity of around 0.5 ppt, with dissolved oxygen at roughly 6 mg/L. Substrate is primarily fine silt and sand with algal mats and scattered emergent and riparian vegetation. The spring is located within the broader Río Conchos watershed, a tributary system of the Río Grande / Río Bravo drainage.

Because the spring flows into an artificial impoundment created to supply local water needs, the fish occupy an unusual hybrid of natural spring and managed reservoir margin. Any change to the water extraction rate, upstream land use, or impoundment management directly affects the available habitat for this single-locality species.

Feeding

Like the majority of Cyprinodon, the bighead pupfish is an opportunistic omnivore whose diet in the wild is dominated by periphyton (the film of algae, cyanobacteria, and associated microorganisms that coats submerged surfaces in warm, shallow, alkaline springs), supplemented by small aquatic invertebrates, detritus, and organic particles. The tricuspid teeth typical of the genus are well-suited to scraping these biofilm communities from hard substrates — rocks, roots, and the walls of the spring channels.

In captivity, the species accepts a wide range of small foods: sinking algae wafers, spirulina-based flakes, finely minced frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp, and live or frozen daphnia. A diet weighted toward vegetable matter and microalgae best reflects the natural feeding ecology of a spring-dwelling Cyprinodon. Overfeeding protein-rich foods in warm water degrades water quality rapidly in the small aquarium volumes appropriate for this species and should be avoided.

Mating

The bighead pupfish follows the reproductive pattern typical of non-annual Cyprinodon inhabiting permanent spring systems: mating occurs in shallow, warm, well-lit water over an extended season rather than being compressed into a brief annual window triggered by the desiccation and refilling of an ephemeral pool. The American Killifish Association notes that reproduction peaks during the rainy season, when rising water levels expand available shallow habitat and the slight influx of cooler, oxygenated water may provide a seasonal cue, but the spring itself persists year-round and fish do not undergo diapause.

Males are territorial and intensely competitive. In the confined shallow channels of Baños de San Diego, dominant males establish and defend small patches of substrate, displaying vigorously with erect fins and lateral posturing to subordinate males while courting females with rapid circling and fin-flaring. A dominant male in breeding colour — deep iridescent blue with darkened bars — is strikingly different in appearance from a subordinate or resting male, a common feature of Cyprinodon social dynamics.

Breeding

Cyprinodon pachycephalus is a non-annual, plant- and substrate-spawner in permanent water. The female deposits small, adhesive eggs individually onto fine-leaved vegetation, algal mats, root masses, or other available substrate at or near the bottom of shallow spring channels; the male fertilises them externally as they are laid. Eggs are not buried in substrate and do not require a period of diapause — they incubate directly in the water and hatch within a few days under warm spring temperatures. The species is therefore a non-annual killi by mode: eggs develop continuously in water, and adults are comparatively long-lived relative to seasonal killifish.

In captivity, conditioning the pair on a varied diet, maintaining warm water (79–86 °F), and providing fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop near the bottom encourages egg deposition. Because adults will consume eggs given the opportunity, transferring eggs or spawning substrate to a separate rearing container immediately after spawning is advisable. Fry are small at hatching but free-swimming quickly and accept commercially available fry foods and newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. The warm, hard, slightly saline water of the natural habitat should be matched as closely as possible to achieve good results in the aquarium.

In the aquarium

Cyprinodon pachycephalus presents a significant challenge in captivity, and FishBase notes that it is regarded as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium. This difficulty almost certainly reflects the highly specific and extreme conditions of its natural spring habitat — constant high temperatures approaching or exceeding 104 °F near the source, hard alkaline water, and a particular water chemistry profile that is difficult to replicate outside of a climate-controlled specialist setup.

For the dedicated pupfish keeper, a small heated species aquarium (10–20 US gal) with vigorous filtration, hard alkaline water (pH 7.2–7.8), a temperature maintained at 82–90 °F (well below the source spring temperature but within the range likely encountered in the cooler downstream channels and impoundment margin), and a slight brackish salinity (1–2 g/L marine salt) most closely approaches the natural conditions. Fine sand substrate, smooth rocks, and robust algal growth provide natural foraging opportunities. Males are aggressive toward each other and toward females outside of spawning; a ratio of one male to two or more females in adequate space reduces injury.

Given its Critically Endangered status and the conservation sensitivity of this species, any captive population should be treated as a potential genetic resource and maintained with breeding records. Hobbyists keeping this species through specialist killifish societies play a potential role in maintaining viable captive populations, though captive breeding cannot substitute for the protection of the wild spring habitat.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Cyprinodon pachycephalus as Critically Endangered (CR), with the most recent assessment dating to 2018. The listing reflects an extreme range restriction — the entire species is known from a single spring system, Baños de San Diego in Chihuahua, Mexico — combined with ongoing threats to that habitat. A species occupying one spring outflow of a few metres' width has essentially no buffer against localised disaster, and the CR listing is therefore not precautionary but descriptive of an already acute situation.

The principal threats are the water needs of the local community: the spring feeds an impoundment that supplies domestic and agricultural water to San Diego de Alcalá and surrounding areas, meaning that any increase in extraction, any infrastructure failure, or any contamination event with the supply system would devastate or eliminate the population. The documented hybridisation with C. eximius at the same site creates an additional threat of genetic swamping — if the two species continue to hybridise at high rates, C. pachycephalus could be lost as a distinct lineage even while hybrid individuals persist. Introduced species, including the globally invasive western mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis), are a persistent concern in Mexican spring systems though their status at this specific locality requires up-to-date survey data.

Conservation of this species depends entirely on protecting and managing the Baños de San Diego spring, engaging local communities on water-use practices compatible with spring-flow maintenance, monitoring hybrid frequency, and potentially establishing a secured captive insurance population through specialist killifish societies and Mexican federal programmes.
