Taxonomy & naming
Cyprinodon riverendi was first described by the Cuban naturalist Felipe Poey in 1860, originally placed in the now-defunct genus Trifarcius as Trifarcius riverendi. Poey was among the most productive zoologists of nineteenth-century Cuba, and this pupfish was one of many Cuban freshwater fishes he characterised from material collected on the island. The authority is therefore written without parentheses — the combination Cyprinodon riverendi Poey, 1860 is the currently accepted name under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan).
For much of the twentieth century, C. riverendi was treated as a subspecies of the sheepshead minnow, Cyprinodon variegatus, a widespread species of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America; the trinomen Cyprinodon variegatus riverendi was in common use. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes now recognise it as a distinct species, a position also reflected in the IUCN assessment of 2020. The genus Cyprinodon itself belongs to the family Cyprinodontidae and sits within the order Cyprinodontiformes — the toothcarps — a predominantly New World group that has diversified explosively in isolated spring systems and coastal lowlands across the Americas and into the Mediterranean basin.
The generic name combines the Latin cyprinus (carp) and the Greek odous (teeth), referencing the small, tricuspid, incisor-like teeth — distinctive papillae that characterise the genus. The specific epithet riverendi honours Luis Riverendi, a Cuban naturalist who was a contemporary and associate of Poey.
Morphology
Cyprinodon riverendi is a compact, deep-bodied pupfish reaching a maximum recorded total length of 3 in, though most adult individuals are considerably smaller. Like other members of the genus, it has a short snout, a relatively large eye set high on the head, and a slightly upturned, terminal mouth bearing the characteristic tricuspid teeth that give Cyprinodontidae their name. The body is laterally compressed and robust; the caudal peduncle is deep and the caudal fin squarish.
Colouration follows the Cyprinodon genus-typical pattern: males in breeding dress develop iridescent blue-green to silvery flanks with variable dark barring and an intensified coloration on the fins, while females and non-breeding males are duller, olive-brown to yellowish-grey with a series of irregular dark blotches or bars along the flank. As in related species, colour intensity is strongly influenced by temperature, water chemistry, and social context. The flanks of both sexes often carry a faint lateral band or mottled pattern that affords camouflage against sandy or vegetated substrates.
Habitat
The Cuban pupfish occupies freshwater environments in the Caribbean basin, with a native range centred on Cuba and extending to Grand Cayman, Jamaica, and parts of the Florida peninsula. FishBase classifies it as freshwater, benthopelagic, non-migratory, and tropical — inhabiting shallow coastal marshes, slow-moving lowland streams, ditches, and the margins of lagoons where freshwater and slightly brackish conditions occur.
Water chemistry tolerances span pH 6.0 to 8.0, soft to medium hardness, and a temperature range of roughly 32–86 °F in the FishBase data, though the ecologically relevant thermal range for a Caribbean lowland species is substantially warmer — the lower bound reflects tolerance rather than preference, and active populations will be found in warm, sun-warmed shallows in the 72–82 °F range. The species' benthopelagic habit places it in close association with the substrate and lower water column, where it forages among detritus, algal mats, and fine sediment in the shallow margins of its waterbodies.
Feeding
Like most Cyprinodon pupfishes, C. riverendi is an opportunistic omnivore whose diet tracks the small invertebrates, algae, detritus, and organic particles available in shallow tropical freshwaters. The tricuspid incisor-like teeth of the genus are adapted for scraping and cropping — effective against biofilm, algal crusts, small crustaceans, chironomid larvae, and filamentous algae. FishBase records the species as omnivorous, consistent with the foraging ecology of the Cyprinodontidae as a family.
In captivity the fish accepts a wide range of prepared and live foods: high-quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen Artemia, Daphnia, bloodworm, and algae-based foods. A diet varied between plant-derived and protein-rich items best reflects the generalist wild trophic strategy. Overfeeding with protein-dense live foods can accelerate growth but may reduce longevity in a species adapted to the resource-variable conditions of seasonal tropical shallows.
Mating
Cyprinodon riverendi is a non-annual killifish, spawning in permanent or near-permanent freshwater rather than in ephemeral pools subject to dry-season desiccation. Reproduction follows the plant- and substrate-spawning mode characteristic of Cyprinodon: pairs deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic vegetation, root masses, algal mats, or on the substrate surface, returning to spawn repeatedly over an extended period rather than in a single mass spawning event tied to seasonal flooding.
Males in the genus are typically territorial during the breeding season, defending small patches of substrate or plant cover and courting females with lateral displays that highlight their breeding colouration. Courtship is vigorous and can be rough — tank setups need sufficient cover and space to allow females to retreat from persistent males. Spawning in the wild coincides with the warmer, wetter months, when rising temperatures and food abundance stimulate gonadal development.
Breeding
Eggs of Cyprinodon riverendi are adhesive and deposited in small batches on vegetation or fine substrate, where they incubate in water without any diapause period — unlike annual killifish whose eggs enter a dormant dry-season phase buried in peat or sediment. Incubation time is temperature-dependent and typical of tropical Cyprinodontidae: eggs hatch within a week to ten days at warm temperatures. Fry are small but relatively well-developed at hatching, able to take fine particulate foods within days.
In the aquarium, breeding is straightforward if the pair is given appropriate cover. Fine-leaved plants such as Java moss, spawning mops, or a soft sandy substrate with roots provide oviposition sites. Because adults may consume their own eggs or fry, regular collection of eggs for incubation in a separate container or a well-planted rearing tank with minimal predation pressure gives the best survival rates. Both sexes should be well conditioned on varied live and frozen foods in the weeks prior to pairing. Water quality and a stable warm temperature in the range of 75–82 °F support consistent spawning activity.
In the aquarium
The Cuban pupfish is an undemanding, robust aquarium fish suited to hobbyists interested in Caribbean Cyprinodontidae or in smaller, characterful toothcarps. It tolerates a broad range of water conditions — pH 6.0–8.0, soft to moderately hard water, tropical temperatures — and adjusts readily to typical aquarium tap water across much of its range. A tight-fitting lid is advisable, as with all small cyprinodontids.
The species is best kept in a species-only or carefully chosen companion setup. Males are territorial toward conspecific males and will pursue females relentlessly, so a ratio of one male to two or more females with adequate visual cover is recommended. Decor of fine sand, smooth pebbles, and clumps of fine-leaved plants or moss reflects the shallow weedy margins it inhabits in nature and encourages spawning behaviour. The fish is active, curious, and engages readily with its keeper during feeding — traits shared across the genus that make Cyprinodon species rewarding in a dedicated nano or species tank despite their modest size.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Cyprinodon riverendi as Least Concern in April 2020, reflecting a distribution spanning multiple islands and parts of continental Florida broad enough to preclude immediate extinction risk under current conditions. For a pupfish — a genus notorious for single-spring endemics of extreme fragility — a multi-island Caribbean distribution represents relative security.
Nonetheless, the pressures facing shallow tropical freshwaters in the Caribbean are real and ongoing: coastal wetland drainage for agriculture and development, water extraction reducing permanent spring and stream flow, pollution from agricultural runoff, and the introduction of competitors and predators including mosquitofish (Gambusia spp.) — a genus that has been implicated in the decline of pupfishes across the Americas through direct predation and competition. The Cuban portion of the range may face additional pressures from land-use change in lowland coastal zones. As with many Cyprinodon species, monitoring of individual island and basin populations is important to detect localised decline before it compounds across the range.
