The Bocochi pupfish is a small, endemic cyprinodontid confined to a single spring-fed sub-drainage of the Rio Conchos basin in the state of Chihuahua, northern Mexico. Described by Lozano-Vilano and Contreras-Balderas in 1993, it occupies cool, hard, clear-water habitats associated with the Bacochi spring system near Carichic — a geographically restricted environment under sustained pressure from water abstraction and the management of dams upstream. The IUCN assessed it as Near Threatened in 2018, a status that reflects both its geographic restriction to a single sub-drainage and the ongoing threat that human water use poses to the spring flows that sustain it.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyprinodon salvadori was formally described by María de Lourdes Lozano-Vilano and Salvador Contreras-Balderas in 1993. It belongs to the large Neotropical pupfish genus Cyprinodon, which is distributed across the southwestern United States, Mexico, the Caribbean, and parts of Central America, and is placed in the family Cyprinodontidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid combination as Cyprinodon salvadori Lozano-Vilano & Contreras-Balderas, 1993.

The species epithet salvadori is a patronym honouring Dr Salvador Contreras-Balderas (1936–2009), the eminent Mexican ichthyologist and conservation biologist who devoted much of his career to documenting and protecting the endemic freshwater fishes of Mexico's northern desert basins. Contreras-Balderas was himself a co-author of the original description, making the dedication an unusual but fitting tribute to a colleague's lifetime of work on precisely this group of fishes. The common name 'Bocochi pupfish' derives from the Bacochi locality within the Carichic area of Chihuahua where the type material was collected.

Morphology

As a member of the genus Cyprinodon, C. salvadori is a compact, deep-bodied pupfish with a blunt snout, an upturned mouth positioned for surface and mid-water feeding, and the stout, laterally compressed body form typical of the group. Like other pupfish, males and females differ noticeably in colouration during the breeding season: males in nuptial condition develop bright metallic or iridescent hues — typically blues and silvers — while females remain drabber, predominantly brownish or olive with darker lateral banding.

Detailed morphometric data specific to C. salvadori are sparse in the available literature. The species is presumed to conform to the general Cyprinodon body plan, reaching a few centimetres in total length at maturity, consistent with the small size typical of desert-spring pupfishes across northern Mexico and the US Southwest.

Habitat

Cyprinodon salvadori is endemic to the Bacochi sub-drainage within the broader Rio Conchos basin of Chihuahua, Mexico. The Rio Conchos is a major western tributary of the Rio Grande, draining much of the Chihuahuan Desert plateau. Within this basin the species is confined to the spring-fed waters near Carichic, where the IUCN records it occupying clear-water habitats over substrates of gravel, sand, mud, and silt at depths to approximately 5 ft, in conditions ranging from slow to fast current.

Water chemistry at the type locality reflects the calcium-rich geology of the Sierra Tarahumara foothills: the American Killifish Association records a temperature range of 63–68 °F (cool by the standards of many pupfishes), a near-neutral pH of approximately 7, and hardness around 10 dGH — conditions characteristic of spring-fed, geologically buffered water rather than the hypersaline or near-boiling springs associated with some Cyprinodon relatives in the Chihuahuan Desert. The spring-fed nature of the habitat creates a relatively stable thermal and chemical environment, which in turn makes the population acutely sensitive to any reduction in spring discharge.

Feeding

Like most members of the genus Cyprinodon, the Bocochi pupfish is presumed to be a generalist omnivore, picking algae, diatoms, small invertebrates, and organic detritus from the substrate and water column. The upturned mouth and robust jaw of pupfishes are well suited to scraping biofilm from rock surfaces and gravel, a feeding mode well documented in congeners across the Chihuahuan Desert and the US Southwest.

No dedicated dietary study of C. salvadori has been published. In captivity, pupfishes of this type readily accept a variety of small foods including high-quality flake and micro-pellet, live or frozen Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, and micro-worms, with vegetable-based components supporting their natural algae-grazing tendency.

Mating

Cyprinodon salvadori is a non-annual pupfish inhabiting permanent spring water — it does not bury eggs in dried substrate and has no obligate diapause phase. Reproduction follows the pattern documented across the genus: males establish and actively defend small territories in shallow, sun-warmed areas of the spring or stream, using conspicuous lateral displays, chasing, and fin-spreading to court females and repel rival males. The bright nuptial colouration of males serves as both a mate-attraction signal and a territorial advertisement.

Courting males pursue and herd receptive females into their territory, where spawning takes place over substrate or near fine aquatic vegetation or submerged roots. The mating system is polygynous; a territorial male will attempt to spawn with multiple females, and females may spawn with more than one male across a season. Spawning is not a single event but an extended season-long process, consistent with the permanent water ecology of the species.

Breeding

As a non-annual species living in permanent spring water, C. salvadori spawns throughout an extended breeding season rather than concentrating reproduction into a single pulse before seasonal drying. Eggs are adhesive and deposited individually on fine-leaved plants, submerged roots, sand, or gravel near the substrate or at mid-water; they incubate directly in the water column with no requirement for a desiccation or diapause phase. This reproductive mode — shared across genus Cyprinodon — contrasts sharply with annual killifishes that must survive dry-season conditions as buried, diapausing eggs.

In congeners such as the well-studied C. macularius, females produce eggs in repeated bouts across the breeding season, with clutch sizes in the range of 50–200 eggs per spawning event. Incubation times depend on water temperature; in the cool spring water typical of C. salvadori's habitat (63–68 °F), development is likely somewhat slower than in warmer-water pupfish species. Fry are small and require fine live foods — infusoria, rotifers, and Artemia nauplii — in the early weeks.

In the aquarium

The Bocochi pupfish is a specialist subject rarely encountered outside dedicated killifish circles. It is not commercially produced and, as a species listed as Near Threatened with a highly restricted natural range, any aquarium populations should derive from legally obtained, documented captive-bred stock.

Care follows the standard Cyprinodon template: a species-only or single-genus aquarium with a fine sand substrate, minimal plantings or spawning mops, and hard alkaline water matching the spring-source chemistry — pH around 7.0, moderate hardness, temperature in the 63–68 °F range. A cooler ambient temperature than many tropical fish require is important; standard tropical aquarium temperatures of 77–82 °F would be too warm for a mountain spring species. Because males are combative, providing multiple visual barriers and limiting male numbers relative to females reduces aggression. Feeding with varied small foods including algae-based flake, Artemia, Daphnia, and micro-pellets maintains condition.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Cyprinodon salvadori as Near Threatened in March 2018, with the evaluation conducted by Topiltzin Contreras MacBeath of the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas, Mexico. The listing reflects two intersecting vulnerabilities: extreme geographic restriction — the species is known only from the Bacochi sub-drainage near Carichic within the Rio Conchos system — and the direct threat that water abstraction and dam management pose to the spring flows the population depends on.

The IUCN assessment identifies dams and water management as the primary threat, with invasive species and disease as secondary concerns. Spring-fed systems in the Chihuahuan Desert are under sustained extraction pressure from agriculture and growing human settlements, and any significant reduction in discharge or alteration of flow regime directly reduces the available habitat of an already-tiny range. The species is also at elevated risk from any introduction of aggressive non-native fish — mosquitofish (Gambusia) and convict cichlids have devastated endemic pupfish populations across the US Southwest and northern Mexico, and the isolated Bacochi springs would offer no refuge.

Given the species' restriction to a single small sub-drainage and the ongoing threat from water use, the Near Threatened assessment may prove conservative if spring discharge continues to decline. Long-term survival likely requires both habitat protection within the Bacochi watershed and, ideally, the maintenance of captive assurance colonies by specialist killifish conservationists.
