The boxer pupfish is a tiny, zooplankton-specialist endemic to Laguna Chichancanab, a large brackish lake set in the karst limestone of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. One of the smallest members of the Cyprinodon species flock that radiated in this isolated lake system, it occupied a unique open-water niche — shoaling in the water column to strain zooplankton, a feeding mode almost unknown among pupfishes. By 2009 it was considered functionally extinct in the wild, the direct consequence of invasive Mozambique tilapia and Astyanax characins introduced in the early 1990s that dismantled the species flock that had evolved there over thousands of years. Cyprinodon simus was formally described by Humphries and Miller in 1981 as part of the landmark study of the Chichancanab pupfish species flock — a remarkable adaptive radiation of at least five to seven Cyprinodon species that evolved in isolation within a single brackish lake in the Yucatán Peninsula. The valid name as listed in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is Cyprinodon simus Humphries & Miller, 1981, with the type locality given as Laguna Chichancanab, Quintana Roo, Mexico. The species belongs to the family Cyprinodontidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The specific epithet simus is Latin for 'flat-nosed' or 'snub-nosed', a reference to the unusually blunt, rounded snout profile that distinguishes this species within the flock and reflects its zooplankton-filtering diet. The species' common name 'boxer pupfish' alludes to the same morphology — the broad, flat face recalls the truncated muzzle of a boxer dog. The genus Cyprinodon combines the Greek kyprinos (carp) and odous (tooth), loosely meaning 'carp-toothed', reflecting the small, incisiform teeth typical of the group.

The defining morphological feature is the snout: distinctly blunt and truncated compared to other members of the flock, an adaptation linked to its open-water zooplankton-feeding habits rather than the scraping or crushing dentition seen in ecologically divergent flock members.

Males in breeding condition are more intensely coloured than females, typically displaying the blue-black flank barring and bright iridescence common to pupfishes, with a dark terminal band on the caudal fin. Habitat

Laguna Chichancanab is a large, elongated lake occupying a karst sinkhole depression in what is now Quintana Roo, Mexico. The lake is notable for its slightly brackish to near-freshwater chemistry influenced by subsurface connections to the regional limestone aquifer, warm temperatures typical of lowland Mesoamerica, and clear to moderately turbid open-water conditions. It is situated in the Yucatán Peninsula lowlands, isolated from any river drainage and hydrologically distinct from adjacent surface waters.

Cyprinodon simus was primarily an open-water species within this system, shoaling in the limnetic zone in contrast to the benthic-associated habits of some flock members. This open-water ecology was unusual for pupfishes, which are more typically found in shallow, vegetated, or structurally complex habitats. Water conditions at Chichancanab are warm year-round, with a chemistry reflecting the alkaline, calcium-rich groundwater of the Yucatán karst — hard and mildly saline rather than the soft acidic conditions associated with rainforest killifish to the south.

Feeding

The boxer pupfish was an ecological specialist for zooplankton — a feeding mode documented by researchers studying the Chichancanab flock's adaptive radiation. It shoaled in open water and filtered small crustaceans and other zooplankton from the water column, a niche that stands in marked contrast to the algae-scraping, molluscivory, and scale-eating strategies evolved by other flock members. This mode is typical of Cyprinodon and the broader Cyprinodontidae family, all of which are continuous or semi-continuous spawners in permanent water habitats.

Males are territorial and defend small patches of substrate or open water where they court females. Breeding males exhibit intensified colouration and engage in lateral displays and rapid circling of females. Spawning involves a brief, close pairing in which adhesive eggs are deposited singly or in small groups. Each female produces eggs in small daily or near-daily batches across an extended period, making the species well-suited to aquarium propagation programmes that can collect eggs over time.

Breeding

In the wild, Cyprinodon simus bred in the warm, year-round stable temperatures of Laguna Chichancanab, a permanent lake that does not undergo the dry-season desiccation that drives annual killi biology. Eggs are adhesive and water-incubated, with no diapause phase; they hatch within days under warm conditions. Fry are small but comparable in size to other Cyprinodon and develop rapidly in warm water.

In the aquarium

Cyprinodon simus is one of the most conservation-significant species in the aquarium hobby, not merely a display fish. Hobbyists maintaining this species are de facto conservation custodians, and its husbandry carries responsibilities that go beyond normal fishkeeping. The species is small — under 2 in — and does not require a large aquarium: a well-maintained tank of 10–15 US gal can house a breeding group. Water should be hard and alkaline (pH 7.5–8.5, hardness 10–25 °dGH) and warm (75–82 °F), reflecting the brackish karst lake conditions of its native Laguna Chichancanab; a small addition of marine salt to raise conductivity is beneficial.

Males are territorial with one another, particularly in close quarters: the typical approach of housing one male with two or more females, or providing heavy planting and visual breaks, reduces aggression to manageable levels. The species is undemanding about food provided the items are appropriately sized — brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, small pellets, and finely chopped meaty foods are all accepted. Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Cyprinodon simus as Near Threatened (NT) in 2018, though this formal status understates the magnitude of the crisis in the wild. Research published in the early 2000s — including Strecker et al. and studies from the Wainwright Lab at UC Davis — documented the catastrophic collapse of the Chichancanab Cyprinodon species flock following the introduction of Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) and the characin Astyanax spp. in the early 1990s. By 2009, C. simus was considered functionally extinct in its native lake, with no surviving wild population confirmed.

The Chichancanab flock represented a textbook example of adaptive radiation in an isolated lake — comparable in significance, if not in scale, to the cichlid flocks of the African Great Lakes. The introduction of two non-native species dismantled this radiation within roughly fifteen years, making it one of the most thoroughly documented freshwater biodiversity collapses in the Americas. The IUCN's NT status reflects the persistence of captive populations maintained by AKA hobbyists, zoo aquaria, and university research groups; it is these ex situ populations that prevent the species from being listed as Extinct.

The lake itself remains degraded by the continued presence of invasive species, and no active restoration programme has been reported in the public literature.
