Epiplatys boulengeri — commonly called Boulenger's panchax — is a West/Central African non-annual killifish whose taxonomic history is as tangled as the forest streams it inhabits. Described by Pellegrin in 1926 from material collected across the Congo basin, it is now treated by the World Register of Marine Species as a synonym of Epiplatys multifasciatus (Boulenger, 1913), the banded panchax, a species known from 23 or more collection localities stretching from Cameroon and Gabon through both Congos. A surface-oriented plant spawner barely 2.5 in long, it haunts the shaded, slow-moving streams and forest brooks of the equatorial lowlands and carries a 2009 IUCN Data Deficient rating that reflects genuine ignorance rather than ecological comfort.

Taxonomy & naming

Epiplatys boulengeri was described by the French ichthyologist Jacques Pellegrin in 1926, based on specimens from the Congo basin. The specific epithet honours the Belgian-British zoologist George Albert Boulenger, who described a remarkable number of African fish species in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Pellegrin placed the fish in the genus Epiplatys, where it remains under its hobbyist name, though the World Register of Marine Species now lists Epiplatys boulengeri as a synonym of Epiplatys multifasciatus (Boulenger, 1913). Under that treatment, Boulenger's own name — given to the banded panchax on the basis of its pronounced lateral banding — carries priority by thirteen years.

The genus Epiplatys (family Nothobranchiidae) belongs to the large order Cyprinodontiformes and represents the non-annual, surface-dwelling panchax lineage of West and Central Africa, distinct from the soil-burying Nothobranchius and their kin. The name Epiplatys derives from the Greek epi ('upon') and platys ('flat, broad'), alluding to the dorsoventrally flattened head and the habit of hugging the water surface. Regardless of which nomenclature is followed, the fish is widely traded and documented in the killifish hobby under the boulengeri name, and the American Killifish Association maintains a species page under the multifasciatus synonym with 25 JAKA (Journal of the American Killifish Association) references spanning 1962 to 2022.

Morphology

Epiplatys boulengeri is a slender, torpedo-shaped killifish reaching a maximum of 2.5 in total length (FishBase). The body profile is characteristic of surface-oriented panchax: a flattened dorsal surface, an upturned mouth angled to seize prey from just below the film, and eyes set high on the head for scanning above and to the sides. The caudal fin in males is typically extended or pointed; females are somewhat rounder and shorter-finned.

Colouration is the centrepiece of the genus. Males of the boulengeri / multifasciatus complex are marked with multiple dark lateral crossbands or spots against an olive-green to yellowish-tan body, with iridescent turquoise or blue-green scales on the flanks that flash distinctly under raking light. Fin markings — red, orange, or blue marginal bands and spots in the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins — vary by collection locality and have historically driven the proliferation of trade names and local varieties across the Congo basin. Females are more cryptic, with less vivid banding and plain or weakly pigmented fins.

Habitat

FishBase describes the species as inhabiting streams, small rivers, and forest brooks under closed-canopy cover — permanent water bodies, not seasonal pools. Across its range in Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo it is most commonly encountered in the shallow, shaded margins of lowland forest streams where riparian vegetation dips into the water and surface debris accumulates. The AKA documents 23 collection localities, including the Wele River, the Kisangani area (HZ 85 series), Brazzaville, the Losasa River, the Kondoue locality, and the Boende area — all within or adjacent to the Congo basin.

Water chemistry in these forested equatorial lowland streams tends toward soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Practical Fishkeeping's guidance for West African panchax gives general parameters of 2–12 °dGH hardness and pH 6.5–7.0, and FishBase records temperatures of 75–82 °F for this species. The forest canopy provides heavy shade and a constant supply of terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water surface — a key component of the natural diet.

Feeding

Like all Epiplatys, boulengeri is a surface predator whose upturned mouth and high-set eyes are adapted to seizing prey at or just below the water film. In the wild, the diet consists primarily of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates — small insects, insect larvae, fallen beetles and flies, chironomid midges, and any small crustaceans or zooplankton drifting near the surface. The species does not forage into the mid-water or substrate to any significant degree; its anatomical specialisation is the surface layer.

In the aquarium the fish is straightforward to feed once settled. Floating or slow-sinking dried foods — good-quality micro-pellets, flakes, and freeze-dried bloodworm — are accepted, but condition and colour are markedly improved with regular offerings of live or frozen foods: fruit flies (Drosophila), bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp nauplii, and small mosquito larvae. Because the fish strikes from below at the film, sinking foods are largely wasted; surface-floating or slowly descending items are preferred.

Mating

Epiplatys boulengeri is a non-annual killifish: it does not bury eggs in substrate, does not undergo diapause, and is not tied to a seasonal drying cycle. Reproduction is continuous across the year in permanent stream systems. Pairs form temporary bonds during spawning bouts, and the male courts the female with lateral displays that show off his fin pigmentation and body iridescence. Courtship is relatively gentle compared to annual species.

The spawning embrace is brief. The male positions alongside or slightly beneath the female near fine-leaved plants, roots, or spawning mops at or near the surface, and a small number of adhesive eggs — typically one to four per embrace — are pressed onto the substrate. The pair spawns repeatedly over days and weeks, depositing eggs singly or in small batches across plant leaves, Java moss, or wool mops rather than in a single mass event. This extended, low-clutch-size strategy is typical of the non-annual panchax guild and contrasts sharply with the large diapausing clutches of annual soil-burying killies.

Breeding

Eggs of Epiplatys boulengeri are adhesive, relatively large for the fish's body size, and incubate in water without any drying phase. At 75–79 °F, hatching occurs after approximately two to three weeks. The emerging fry are free-swimming almost immediately and large enough to take Artemia nauplii or microworms from the first day; infusoria or commercial fry powder may be needed for the smallest individuals. Growth is steady but unhurried — consistent with the long-lived, non-annual life history — and adults typically live two to three years in captivity.

The standard approach for hobbyists is to maintain a group of adults over a spawning mop of dark wool or Java moss clumps, picking eggs by hand every few days (they are visible against the mop fibres), and incubating them in small containers of shallow, slightly acidic water. Fungused eggs should be removed promptly. Because adults are not aggressive egg-eaters in the manner of some killies, a heavily planted tank can also produce fry in situ, though survival is lower without isolation. Water quality must be kept high — sponge filtration with a gentle flow is the standard setup.

In the aquarium

FishBase flags Epiplatys boulengeri as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium — an unusually strong caveat for a panchax of this size — likely reflecting the sensitivity of wild-caught Congo forest stream material to the water quality compromises common in typical hobby tanks, as well as its non-trivial acclimation requirements. Established, captive-bred fish from reputable killifish society sources are considerably more forgiving.

The species is best housed in a small, well-covered species tank of 10–15 US gal. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as panchax are accomplished jumpers. Soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.5–7.0, hardness below 10 °dGH, temperature 75–81 °F), subdued lighting, dark substrate, and floating plants or surface cover replicate the shaded forest-stream conditions of the Congo basin. Tankmates — if used at all — should be peaceful, similarly sized, and non-competitive at the surface; small tetras or dwarf catfish in the lower water column are workable choices. In a species setup, small groups of one male and two or three females allow continuous low-key spawning without excessive male competition. FishBase's difficulty rating makes this a fish for hobbyists with killifish experience rather than a beginner's species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys multifasciatus (the senior synonym encompassing boulengeri) as Data Deficient (DD) in 2009, with the full citation: Moelants, T. 2010. Epiplatys multifasciatus. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The DD rating indicates that insufficient information existed at the time of assessment to determine extinction risk — not that the species is necessarily secure. With 23 documented collection localities spread across the Congo basin, including areas around Kisangani, Brazzaville, and the Losasa and Wele rivers, the species is not a strict single-locality endemic, but individual stream populations may be highly vulnerable to local disturbance.

The Congo basin lowland forests face intensifying pressure from deforestation for agriculture and logging, with riparian buffer zones often stripped first. Forest-dependent stream fishes that require intact canopy cover and clean, cool water are among the most exposure-sensitive groups in the region. The aquarium trade has historically collected from discrete Congolese localities and maintained those collection codes (HZ 85 series, CMBB, COCOCC) within killifish society records — a form of provenance tracking that may prove valuable if population-level differentiation is eventually assessed. A reassessment with modern survey data would clarify whether boulengeri / multifasciatus populations remain stable across their range or have contracted with forest loss.
