Chevalier's panchax is a slender, surface-dwelling killifish from the Congo River basin — found in rainforest creeks, forested savannah streams, and swamps from the Kadei and Ubangi drainages of the Central African Republic south through the Republic of Congo and deep into the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Males are among the more ornate non-annual killies from central Africa: an olive-brown body tiled with rows of iridescent red spots, a dark chin, and richly marked fins. Two subspecies are recognised — the nominate E. c. chevalieri from western DRC and E. c. nigricans confined to forested areas of the central and eastern Congo basin. Although the IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2009, the species is genuinely uncommon across its range, not easily spawned in captivity, and warrants the careful attention of specialist hobbyists prepared to meet its requirements.

Taxonomy & naming

Epiplatys chevalieri was described by the French ichthyologist Joseph Pellegrin in 1904, on material collected from the Congo basin; the authority is shown in parentheses following the convention for names subsequently moved from their original genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats the name as valid within the genus Epiplatys, which belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae — the African rivulines, a group of killifishes confined to sub-Saharan Africa and notable for the concentration of annual species adapted to seasonally drying pools. Epiplatys itself is largely non-annual, its members inhabiting more permanent water bodies.

Two subspecies are currently recognised. Epiplatys chevalieri chevalieri occupies the western part of the range centred on the DRC, while E. c. nigricans is recorded from the central and eastern Congo basin and is considered to be confined to forested habitats rather than the forested savannah mosaic the nominate form tolerates. FishBase notes additional records from the Lukenie basin, the Aruwimi, the lower Lomami, Wagenia Falls, and the Luilaka and Yenge rivers within the Ruki drainage, suggesting a wider penetration of the Congo system than early collections indicated.

A comparative cytogenetics study published in June 2025 in Comparative Cytogenetics (19: 109–115) reported the karyotype of E. chevalieri as 2n = 48, data that forms part of a broader investigation of chromosome evolution across the genus Epiplatys.

Morphology

Chevalier's panchax is a slender, elongated killifish reaching approximately 2.5 in total length as measured by FishBase, though wild-caught individuals near Kinshasa have been recorded at up to 3 in (around 2.75 inches). The body plan is typical of surface-oriented Epiplatys: slightly flattened dorsally, with the mouth angled upward and positioned at the very front of a flattened head — well suited to snatching insects from the water surface or from overhanging vegetation.

Male colouration is striking. The dorsal surface is olive-brown, lightening on the flanks and belly. Rows of vivid red spots run along the sides — smaller and more densely packed near the dorsal surface, larger on the mid-flank — and the flanks carry considerable iridescence ranging from green to turquoise depending on lighting. The chin is distinctively dark, approaching black. Dorsal, caudal, and anal fins carry red markings in spots and lines and are edged with dark pigment, creating a bordered effect. Females are markedly plainer: the iridescence is absent, fin markings are reduced or lacking, the fins are more rounded in outline, and body size is typically somewhat smaller.

Fry and juveniles display a different pattern: dark blotches and vertical stripes rather than spots, with the characteristic adult spotted patterning emerging only once the fish approaches 1 in or so.

Habitat

Chevalier's panchax occupies a large swath of the Congo River system: the Kadei and Ubangi drainages in the Central African Republic, the Djoué River and right-bank tributaries of the middle Congo basin in the Republic of Congo, and a broad arc through the DRC from Pool Malebo downstream to the 'Portes d'Enfer' waterfalls — a distribution that spans both rainforest and forested savannah zones, with the subspecies E. c. nigricans apparently restricted to the more heavily forested sector.

Within that range the species frequents small rivers, creeks, and swampy areas rather than large open channels. British Killifish Association records from the Kinshasa area describe the biotope as small streams with amber, soft water, little submerged vegetation, and dense shade from overhanging trees and thick grasses. The fish keep to pools of slower-moving water near the surface, where they wait for insects to fall from the vegetation above. FishBase and field guide data add that submerged roots, leaf litter, and marginal vegetation also characterise the habitat, particularly in the swamp component of the range.

Water chemistry is moderately soft and slightly acidic to neutral: FishBase records a pH range of 6.5–7.0 and a hardness of dH 7–10, with temperatures of 75–79 °F. BKA records from near Kinshasa give pH 6.4 and temperatures up to 75 °F. This is not extreme blackwater; the species tolerates near-neutral, lightly mineralised water typical of shaded forest streams rather than the strongly acid, tannin-stained conditions associated with some western African killifishes.

Feeding

Like most Epiplatys, Chevalier's panchax is an insectivorous surface predator in the wild. The BKA account of Kinshasa-area populations describes fish stationed near the water surface beneath overhanging trees and grasses, waiting to pick off insect prey — ants, mosquito larvae, and similar small arthropods — that fall or hatch at the film. The upturned mouth and dorsal flattening of the head are morphological adaptations for precisely this feeding posture.

In captivity the species accepts a varied diet. Live foods — brine shrimp nauplii, daphnia, bloodworms, mosquito larvae, and small insects — are particularly effective and are useful conditioning foods ahead of breeding attempts. Frozen equivalents of these items are generally accepted once the fish are settled. High-quality dry foods can supplement the diet but should not form the sole component; the species benefits from the nutritional variety and behavioural enrichment that live and frozen prey provide. Small portions offered multiple times daily more closely replicate the natural pattern of opportunistic surface foraging.

Mating

Chevalier's panchax is a non-annual killifish and a plant spawner: eggs are deposited on fine-leaved vegetation, floating roots, or spawning mops near the surface and in the water column rather than buried in substrate to undergo diapause. This places E. chevalieri firmly in the non-annual half of killi biology — the fish inhabit permanent or near-permanent streams and swamps, live comparatively long lives, and spawn continuously or in extended seasons rather than compressing reproduction into a brief annual window before a dry-season die-off.

Males are territorial and can be aggressive toward one another, particularly in confined spaces. Courtship involves lateral displaying and fin-spreading by the male to advertise his iridescent flanks and decorated fins to the female. Spawning is a paired activity: eggs are deposited singly or in small numbers on fine plant leaves, mop fibres, or floating organic material, with the pair returning repeatedly to the spawning site over days or weeks. The eggs of this species are described as quite large relative to those of comparable killifishes.

The BKA recommends separating prospective pairs with a glass divider in the breeding tank and conditioning both fish intensively on live foods — ants, mosquito larvae, daphnia — before removing the divider to allow spawning.

Breeding

In the breeding tank, a pair should be set up in a dark, well-covered aquarium furnished with floating spawning mops or fine-leaved plants positioned near or at the surface. Water should be slightly acidic and soft (pH around 6.4–6.8, temperature 72–75 °F), consistent with the Kinshasa biotope data. Eggs are deposited near the top of the mops or on fine leaf surfaces and can be collected by removing the spawning substrate to a separate hatching container, where the eggs incubate in water.

Incubation takes 14–18 days at the temperatures noted above. Fry are free-swimming and small on hatching; they will accept newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as a first food. The BKA notes that growth is slow but not difficult to manage, with adequate feeding and regular water maintenance. Fry display the juvenile pattern of dark blotches and vertical stripes until roughly 1 in, at which point the adult spotted patterning begins to emerge. Aquadiction reports that adults can live up to approximately 3 years under good aquarium conditions — long by killifish standards and reflective of the non-annual life-history strategy.

The BKA assessment — drawn from practical experience in the 1970s — rates the species as not prolific and somewhat difficult to spawn, noting that wild fish are not abundant. This difficulty underscores the value of establishing captive-bred lines through killifish specialist societies, where breeding loan programs help sustain populations of species that do not lend themselves to mass production.

In the aquarium

Chevalier's panchax is not a beginner's fish, though an experienced killifish keeper or surface-dweller enthusiast will find it well within reach. The BKA pamphlet advises a large, well-covered tank with ample surface cover — floating plants, mangrove root tangles, or dark artificial shelter — and subdued lighting; the species is described as shy and benefits from the security of shade and visual breaks. A tight-fitting lid is essential for any surface-oriented killifish.

Water should be kept slightly acidic and soft, in the range of pH 6.4–6.8 and temperature 72–79 °F, matching the forest-creek biotope. Aquadiction reports a somewhat wider tolerance (pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–10, temperature 75–79 °F) suitable for a community setting, and the species is described as peaceful toward non-aggressive tankmates of appropriate size. However, like most killifishes it should not be housed with very small fish or fry, and males may conflict with one another in small tanks. A species tank or a quiet community of similarly sized, non-boisterous fish is optimal.

Chevalier's panchax accepts frozen and dry foods in addition to live prey, which makes routine maintenance manageable, but conditioning on live or frozen insects and invertebrates is advisable if breeding is intended. FishBase references describe the species as 'very difficult to maintain in aquarium' — a characterisation likely reflecting early experience with stressed wild imports; captive-bred fish from specialist sources are generally more tractable. Because the species is uncommon in the trade, sourcing through killifish societies (BKA, AKA, and national affiliates) is the most reliable route.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys chevalieri as Least Concern (LC) in February 2009, noting that the species has a broad distribution across the Congo River system and no evidence of a range-wide population decline meeting threat thresholds at the time of assessment. However, the BKA's field and hobbyist records consistently describe the species as uncommon in nature and not abundant — a characterisation that predates modern pressures and deserves consideration.

The Congo basin faces accelerating deforestation for agriculture and charcoal, increasing sedimentation and turbidity in forest streams, and pollution from artisanal mining activity — pressures that disproportionately affect small-stream specialists like E. chevalieri, which depend on shaded, clear-water microhabitats. The capital region around Kinshasa, where some of the earliest hobbyist collections were made, has undergone dramatic urban and peri-urban expansion that has degraded many of the small creeks and swampy areas historically associated with the species. A reassessment incorporating current land-use change data and any population-trend information would be valuable.

Captive populations maintained through specialist killifish societies carry conservation significance for a fish that is genuinely scarce in the wild and infrequently imported. Keeper networks in the BKA, AKA, and European killifish associations have historically sustained populations of such non-annual Central African Epiplatys between trade gaps, and that role is likely to grow in importance as habitat pressure on Congo basin streams intensifies.
