Epiplatys biafranus was described by Arthur Radda in 1978 from specimens collected in the delta of the Niger and Cross rivers in southern Nigeria. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Epiplatys biafranus Radda, 1978 as the valid name; the authority is not parenthesised, indicating Radda placed the species directly in Epiplatys and it has remained there since original description.
The genus Epiplatys belongs to the family Nothobranchiidae (the African killifishes) and is distributed broadly across West and Central Africa, encompassing both annual and non-annual lineages. Epiplatys biafranus is a non-annual representative, sharing more of its biology with surface-feeding forest panchax than with the seasonal, soil-burying species that dominate the genus in seasonally dry savannas. The specific epithet biafranus references the Bight of Biafra — the southeastern arm of the Gulf of Guinea into which the Niger and Cross rivers drain — giving the name a direct geographic anchor to the type locality region.
Within Epiplatys, the species has not been subject to a detailed systematic revision that resolves its affinities to other panchax; the genus has historically been heterogeneous and molecular studies continue to refine its circumscription. Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length of 2 in, placing Epiplatys biafranus among the smaller members of its genus. Like other panchax killifish, the body plan is elongated and moderately compressed, with a flattened dorsal surface and an upturned mouth suited to taking prey at or just below the water surface. The dorsal fin is set well back on the body, roughly above the anal fin, and both fins are comparatively soft-rayed and rounded.
Detailed colouration notes from the original description and aquarium literature for this species are sparse, but Epiplatys panchax in general display variable lateral spotting or banding, with males typically showing more intense flank iridescence and more vivid fin colouration than females. Females are typically plumper bodied, particularly when gravid, and less brightly coloured — the sexual dimorphism is characteristic of the group. Given the limited published morphological data available for this species specifically, the general panchax body plan is the most reliable reference.
Habitat
The species is native to the Niger and Cross River delta in southern Nigeria — a vast, low-lying mosaic of freshwater swamp forest, mangrove fringe, braided channels, seasonal floodplains, and permanent small streams. FishBase characterises the occupied microhabitat as small brooks and swamps in permanent (non-seasonal) water, consistent with a non-annual life history in which individuals do not need to complete a generation before temporary pools dry out.
This is a lowland tropical habitat with relatively stable temperature and chemistry throughout the year. FishBase records a water temperature of approximately 73 °F and a pH around 7.0 for the type-locality environment. The Niger Delta forest zone is associated with soft to moderately hard water, high ambient humidity, and dense riparian vegetation providing both shade and the submerged plant material on which non-annual killifish spawn. The species is endemic to this region; no records from outside the Niger–Cross delta drainage are established.
Feeding
Epiplatys biafranus is carnivorous, as is characteristic of the panchax group. Wild individuals are surface and near-surface predators, taking small invertebrates — aquatic and terrestrial insects, larvae, and microcrustaceans — that fall to or drift on the water surface in the shaded small-stream environments they occupy. The upturned mouth and dorsally flattened head of panchax killifish are functional adaptations to this surface-hunting mode.
In captivity, the fish readily accepts appropriately sized live and frozen foods: fruit flies (Drosophila), mosquito larvae, small worms, and frozen bloodworm and daphnia. Small dried and prepared foods may be taken once the fish is settled, though live food remains the preferred and most reliable diet for maintaining condition and triggering breeding readiness.
Mating
As a non-annual killifish, Epiplatys biafranus does not engage in the frantic, race-to-reproduce behaviour of soil-burying annual species whose breeding window is defined by the length of a wet season. Instead, pairs spawn repeatedly over an extended period, depositing small numbers of adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged roots, moss clumps, or floating spawning mops near or at the surface.
FishBase notes that the species is not seasonal in its reproduction, consistent with life in permanent water where conditions do not require synchronised annual spawning. Courtship involves the male displaying alongside the female, often with spread fins and intensified colour, before the pair press close together near a chosen spawning site to deposit and fertilise individual eggs. This scatter-spawning mode — a few eggs per day over weeks — contrasts sharply with the mass soil-deposit spawnings of annual killifish and with the bubble-nest building of labyrinth fishes.
Breeding
Eggs are adhesive and attach individually to plant leaves, fine roots, or spawning mop fibres near the water surface. Incubation occurs fully in water — there is no diapause, no drying period, and no peat-moss burial. The eggs develop continuously and hatch after approximately two to three weeks depending on temperature, yielding miniature, free-swimming fry that are immediately capable of feeding on the smallest live foods.
In the aquarium, spawning mops of dark wool or java moss bundles placed just below the surface provide ideal attachment sites and make egg collection straightforward. Eggs can be left on the mop and the mop transferred to a separate rearing container, or the eggs can be picked and incubated individually. Parents do not guard eggs or fry and will eat small fry opportunistically, so separation is advisable. Fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food in the first days, graduating to baby brine shrimp nauplii and micro-worms as they grow. FishBase characterises the species as very difficult to maintain in aquarium — a note suggesting sensitivity to water quality or a demanding diet rather than any complication of the spawning process itself, though precise husbandry data remain sparse in the published literature.

Epiplatys biafranus is a speciality fish available only through killifish society networks and dedicated breeders; it does not appear in the mainstream trade. The American Killifish Association maintains a species profile for it, reflecting the society's role as the primary distribution channel for rare African killies in North America. Hobbyists interested in keeping this species should contact their national killifish association to source captive-bred individuals, since wild-caught specimens would carry significant conservation concern given the species' Endangered status.
FishBase records it as very difficult to maintain in the aquarium, which likely reflects sensitivity to husbandry lapses — suboptimal water quality, inadequate live food, or stress from incompatible tankmates — rather than any extraordinary requirement. Recommended conditions should mirror the type-locality environment: temperatures around 72–75 °F, neutral to slightly acidic pH, soft water, subdued lighting, and plentiful fine-leaved vegetation or floating plants to provide surface cover. The species is small (maximum 2 in) and should be kept with peaceful, similarly sized tankmates or in a species-only setup. Live foods are strongly preferred.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Epiplatys biafranus as Endangered (EN) in 2019, under criteria B1ab(ii,iii)+2ab(ii,iii) — indicating a small, fragmented extent of occurrence and area of occupancy that is in continuing decline due to habitat deterioration. The assessment was authored by Babatunde David Olaosebikan (Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology, Nigeria) and Philippe Lalèyè (Université d'Abomey-Calavi, Benin), both specialists in West African freshwater ichthyology.
The Niger Delta is one of Africa's most ecologically threatened wetland systems. Hydrocarbon extraction and oil spills have contaminated large areas of the freshwater swamp forest zone; agricultural conversion and drainage of small streams and swamps have reduced and fragmented the permanent-water habitats the species depends on; and deforestation of the riparian zone removes the shading and leaf litter that characterise the microhabitats occupied by forest panchax killifish. As a narrow endemic — apparently restricted to the Niger–Cross delta drainage — the species has no geographic refuge from these pressures.
Capacity for recovery is limited by the species' restricted range, its dependence on intact forest-swamp microhabitats, and the scale of industrial development in the Niger Delta. Maintenance of captive populations through the killifish hobby provides a small insurance policy; the American Killifish Association's conservation effort for this and similarly threatened African killies is the primary hobbyist pathway. Formal conservation action would require protection of remaining swamp forest fragments within the delta and enforcement of existing environmental regulations on upstream drainage and oil-field operations.
